Dave Meltzer with the sad news:

QUOTE
Hilario Vargas Ruiz, who used the name Popitekus, an 80s heavyweight star, passed away on 7/12 from a cerebral thrombosis due to complications of diabetes at the age of 53. Popitekus, one of the few true big men who was a headliner in Mexico when TV hit in the late 80s, was part of a heel Caveman trio with the brothers of Pirata Morgan called Las Cavernicolas, partnering with Troglodita (Hombre Bala) & CroMagnon (Verdugo) who feuded with the top trios of the early 90s. He had a ton of big matches, and lost his hair nine times during his career, to El Egipcio, Scorpio (who just passed away), Pirata Morgan, Mil Mascaras, Fabuloso Blondy (Ken Timbs), Super Muneco, Brazo de Oro, Enrique Vera and the original Mascara Sagrada. He held the Mexican national heavyweight title from May 21, 1989, when he won the tournament final beating Gran Markus Jr., (the title was vacated when Alfonso Dantes retired as champion) at Arena Coliseo in Mexico City, and lost it to Markus Jr. on July 9, 1990, also at Arena Coliseo. He was a regular opponent for Andre the Giant in Mexico from 1983 to 1986, at the tail end of Andre’s touring career, because he was a big agile guy who could bump and make Andre’s offense look good. He also appeared briefly in a movie called “Santa Sangre,” most notable because there was a shower scene showing him fully nude, which is very rare for Mexican wrestlers in the movies. CMLL ran a minute of applause for him at the 7/13 show at Arena Mexico. The wrestler Popitekus Jr. was not related to him.

I love that match but it's the only Popi match I've ever seen. Is there any word on Popitekus match nominations for the DVDVR lucha set?
