Title: Dragon Gate

Haven't watched any of their 08 yet. Should I? Genki Horiguchi? Does Anthony W Mori still wrestle?

{Wrestling KO} Mike - January 5, 2009 11:57 PM (GMT)
Don't waste your time. Instead, go watch some lucha.

Tim Evans - January 6, 2009 12:33 AM (GMT)
And only IWRG since CMLL and AAA are the shits.

Well at least I know I wasn't the only one who had this question. Sort figured this would be the answer. Actually its probably nicer than I expected.

Anthony still wrestles. Don't think he was in anything big last year.

No love for Jorge Rivera?

I don't hate Dragon gate like most people around here do. Yeah the main events are full of overkill Alan4L type favorite moves but I enjoy the undercards. I like Masaaki Mochizuki, GAMMA and Don Fuji.

Yoshino would be on my list in the event that I made one. With some more viewings Mochi as well most likely

YAMATO slowly showing that he is a Masochist has been pretty good. Dude will get up and smile after a big move as well as saying Kimochi-ze [ It feels good? ] after a move or a big exchange. It isn't much but I'm curious as to where it goes.

Oh he'll make it on mine.

Watched Mochizuki vs. Sekimoto and thought it was pretty bad. Mochizuki loves doing the "no sell so I can lock you in flash submission where we can rest for 2 minutes" spot. He's just as spotty as the average DG wrestler, don't let the kicking gimmick fool you.

[Wrestling KO] Ben - January 12, 2009 12:23 AM (GMT)
DG has officially ruined him in your estimation Mike?

Clayton Jones - January 12, 2009 12:33 AM (GMT)
Mochizuki hasn't had the faintest idea how to sell in years, maybe ever. I'd have to go back and rewatch his BattlArts stuff to say for sure. I don't dislike him but like most of their roster, I'm only interested in watching him in tags.

Definitely. Reckless kicker WAR Mochizuki ruled.

So I've watched a decent amount of Dragon Gate, and basically there were no surprises. The style just keeps getting more bloated and the roster full of less and less interesting factions/angles. That said I do enjoy fast paced, highspot heavy wrestling and they did hit on a few decent matches over the course of the year. In particular the one really good block of television they put on not surprisingly included part of a one night tag tournament that forced them to wrestle more focused matches. A few roster members have an outside shot at my ballot:

Dragon Kid, for me at least, is the glue of the federation at this point. He has an idea of how to sell, his offense is fun, and he's been around long enough that he works smoothly with most everyone. I think Genki and Mori are both a bit better than him at the underdog role, but Genki's heel and neither of them are getting the high profile matches that DK does anymore.

Susumu and Ryo Saito make a good team together. Susumu put on the best singles performance in Dragon Gate of the year from what I saw. He came into his title shot VS Shingo with his ribs heavily taped and sold it for the majority of the match and showed some fire along the way. He throws a nice lariat for a junior. I've always liked Saito as the suplex heavy junior.

BxB Hulk loves to land on his head at inappropriate angles and has a mixed bag of offense I like and dislike. Sells better than the majority of the DG roster, which is to say when he takes a move, often he'll act like it hurt for a moment. Does a nice "looks around dazed and collapses" after taking a big move.

Cyber Kong might actually be the best wrestler in the fed right now. Kind of like Don Fuji a few years ago, where he brings the personality and big body for the little dudes to bounce off of. He was excellent in the 6 man that happened in that DDT offshoot fed with Hulk and Shingo VS the DDT guys, which will almost definitely make my purotopia top 20.

Yamato has good facials and good ring presence. Unfortunately I don't think he has much else. He usually looks a little off when things get hectic in the tag matches. I haven't watched any singles from him in 08, that might be the last Dragon Gate related wrestling I search out before the end of the weekend.

That's pretty much it. Shingo, Doi and Yoshino all looked good at times, but I have too big problems with each to consider them for my top 100. Even the guys above have the slimmest of chances of making my ballot. I might end up watching that Shingo/Sekimoto match Ditch has up too while I'm thinking about it. Anyway I'm going to stop typing and watch another match before calling it a night, since so few here care about Dragon Gate in the first place.

I care, Clayton, I care.

Hijo del Parties - February 7, 2009 05:53 PM (GMT)
Clayton is the MVP of these threads lately, so yeah, I too give a damn.

I've watched at least one match of all the major DG players and disliked everything I've seen. Keeping an open mind and would love to see someone rip it up in that company given their recent flourish, but even dudes like Dragon Kid whose Toryumon stuff I like look weak and lazy these days. Saito's probably my favorite of the lot, as he'll still sometimes put the boots to opponents, but he has plenty of bad habits as well w/r/t selling and finisher overkill. Have to see more Cyber Kong. I downloaded like a dozen DG matches a while back with the intention of really giving them my best effort, but kept putting it off before finally deleting most when all that World of Sport and IWRG made the rounds.

Ha, thanks guys. Cold has that Summer Adventure Tag Leage show up if anyone who hasn't seen it has some spare time over the weekend and feels like watching. I think it's the three best matches the fed put on last year, at least from what I've seen. Not surprisingly I liked the semi-finals better than the finals.

Is Kenchiro Arai still doing anything worth watching? Or is he in a different post Toryumon fed?
