We will be doing a Karaoke Idol competition!! It will all take place in one meeting and everyone can win points for their house/family.
Participants will be given a zip file of songs (ranging from all sorts of musical genres) and they will have probably 1-3 weeks to practice before they perform. Participants will only be given songs that have karaoke versions and those will be provided before the final performance. At a point between getting the songs and giving the performance, participants will message me their top three choices of songs to sing (in ties, those who message me soon will get the song).
Judging, judges, points, and final dates are still tentative, but all participants will have ample time to practice. There will be no penalties or fees for participating.
The songs picked will be from a wide spectrum of genres and difficulties. Faster or more verbose songs will be harder to perform, but could positively impact judging.
We had a lot of people come do karaoke at the meeting and points should be a nice motivator for you all to try! That said, I need to know how many people are interested so that I know how many songs to pull. Please let me know that you'd be willing to do it on a Friday in the near future (with final performances in about 3 weeks). Responses at this point are not commitments; there will be an official sign-up later.
DO IT FOR THE PRIDE, THE BRAGGING RIGHTS, AND THE POINTS

I'd being interested to doing this if I can get some english songs. I wouldn't mind try a japanese one for fun, though. lol. I thought I was passable on the Tytania opening song from the spring.
Preference on male songs, especially ones with lower pitch.

Can I do Bloodhound Gang- the ballad of chasey lane?
You don't get to pick the songs and, like I said above, there won't be full English songs. [edit: clarification: you don't get to pick the selection of songs, but you can pick what song you'd like from that selection.]

Do you think Richmond Salons or Temple is a better venue for this event?
Just trying to figure out the dates ^_^
Temple would probably be better. I like that room better

Will we get to know/see the zip file of songs? I assume yes but I just want to make that clear as well.
It will be distributed after sign up. From there, you can do what you wish with all of the songs. This is just a preliminary thread so I know how many songs to get so that everyone has a large selection of choices.

Temple's fine with me, as less likely we'll be locked out!
We also have a lower chance of bothering anyone by singing loudly and with passion!
Unless another security guy interrupts again!
Also any particular reason they are all Japanese songs?
I know of a few anime openings and endings from Japanese bands/produced for the anime that are English.
If we actually got together in that Japanese club class someone suggested it may be a different story, but my ability to parrot Japanese sounds is limited.
I understand the problem of us suggesting songs, people may post songs they already know really well, but it seems to me I am not the only person desiring some in English.

The participants are going to get a lot of time to practice and not only will we recognize that y'all probably don't know any of the songs, we probably won't hold pronunciation against you (too much). Not only that, but we can't populate the entire musical selection with full-English songs because that creates two vastly different levels of difficulty. There could be a handful of full-English tracks, but if there aren't enough for everyone, there will be a rush of participants trying to vie for those few tracks and those who don't get them will be at a disadvantage, whether they wanted them or not.
Yes, anime opening and all other forms of j-pop have full-English songs, but a lot of times, the songs and lyrics are geared towards strange syllabic patterns (one-room-dis-co becomes one-roo-mu-di-su-co) that sound strange to even the most pronounced karaoke singers.
Also, English tracks tend to not have karaoke tracks in most genres. It is important that we have karaoke tracks. They are our friends.
A situation where we have only full-English tracks is not likely to happen. I think a mandatory language selection is too limiting of a factor. We won't get enough good songs for everyone.
Unfortunately, this is a no-budge issue. I'm sorry if it's a dealbreaker, but we're going to try and have a WIDE range of music for all levels of singers that is also fair to other contestants and are actually good songs. If you're unsure, at least wait until the official sing-up and you receive the music tracks. There is no penalty for backing out or even doing bad.

Updated the sign-up page. In so many words: YOU HAVE ONE MORE WEEK TO SIGN UP, BUT YOU MUST SEND ME A PM. All other attempts of signing-up will be ignored. For realsies.
The song pack will be going out shortly to those who signed up. In a weeks or two, non-participants will be able to download a "lite" song pack without the karaoke versions.

Here's the song list (arranged by multi-song artist, then one-song artist): The lyrics for all of these (except Music, see below) are easily found.
Ayumi Hamasaki: BLUE BIRD - A light summer song with a catchy chorus and a rising verse. SEASONS - A pop-ballad staple. Slow and emotional. talkin' 2 myself - An intense rock song with a consistent-speed chorus. decision - An emotional rock song.
Koda Kumi: Alive - A slow ballad based on a classical piece. Candy feat. Mr. Blistah - An Arabian hip-hop song. (Constants are NOT responsible for Mr. Blistah's rap, but attempting it can't hurt *hinthint*) Run For Your Life - An up-tempo summer pop song. Carefully decide how to handle some of the overlapping vocals.
mihimaru GT: diverge - A beautiful pop-rock/hip-pop ballad. (Contestants are NOT responsible for Miyake's (male part) rap, but attempts are appreciated) Eegana - An up-tempo reggae song with some creative BPM changes. (Contestants are NOT responsible for Miyake's (male part) rap in the intro or his small lines in the chorus. Contestants are responsible for the rest of the lines) Gazen Yeah! - An up-tempo summer pop song. Watch out for the rap parts, they can be a little difficult. I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY - A hip-pop remake of Kylie Monogue's "I Should Be So Lucky."
Nakashima Mika: Eien no Uta - A slow tempo reggae song. (Contestants are NOT responsible for the intro rap) LIFE - A mid-tempo pop song. More technical than emotional.
Namie Amuro: CAN'T SLEEP, CAN'T EAT, I'M SICK - An up-tempo hip-hop song. You don't need to sing in such a high octave for the chorus.(Contestants are not responsible for the intro male rap part.) Come - An electronic ballad. Technical in the beginning, emotional later on.
w-inds.: CAN'T GET BACK - A hip-hop/pop song. Speeds up for the chorus (For the chorus, contestants are ONLY responsible for Keita's part (main male vocals, "I can't get back the tiiiime")) IT'S IN THE STARS - A funk-pop song. (Contestants are responsible for the "It's in the stars" lines) LOVE IS THE GREATEST THING - A summer funk-pop song. Really feel the emotion in the chorus.
BoA: Eien - A mid-tempo hip-hop song. Emotional and technical. Buono!: Lotta Love Lotta Love - A high-energy pop-rock song. GAM:LU LU LU - A catchy pop song. Golden Circle feat. Teraoka Yohito, Matsutoya Yumi, YUZU:Music - A folksy pop song. (also, see below) Maeda Yuki: Omae no Namida wo Ore ni Kure - An emotionally charged and technically sound enka song. Otsuka Ai: Sakuranbo - A pop-rock staple. Very cutesy and all-around happy. Perfume: Negai - A down-tempo, electronic ballad. Very technical, not as emotional. Porno Graffitti: Koyoi, Tsuki ga Miezutomo - A high-intensity rock song with small hints of electronica. Salt 5: GET UP! RAPPER - A silly up-tempo rap song. (Contestants are NOT responsible for the audience parts, but they are responsible for the choruses)

Music, despite being one of the better songs to come out of 2007, does not have easily-found lyrics. I've found the lyrics, so you don't need to go digging. Please let me know of any errors.

i'm surprised there's no TM Revolution/Abingdon Boy School or Gackt on the list
I love TM Revolution and ABS, but I don't have karaoke versions for their songs. As for Gackt: I haven't kept up with his more recent releases and it didn't even cross my mind when I was pulling songs. Maybe next time
Again, we're still taking new contestants. Just PM me!
To contestants, a few of you had issues downloading the pack. Is everyone having these issues or are these isolated incidents?

naruhodou~
well, the only issue i have is the file is rather big. and my apartment has really crappy internet service (max is like 60 kb/s if i'm lucky) so it takes a while to download.
EDIT: i forgot to add but when exactly is the performance?

do we have to post what song we'll be doing prior to the day or is it given out randomly?
The date to turn in your song preference is NOVEMBER 11. NOT BEFORE.Any votes that are sent in (including the few I already got) won't count. You'll have to wait until that date and then, preference will be given based on PM order, so be sure no to dilly-dally getting that in.
Again, THERE IS STILL TIME TO ENTER. PM me for the link to the song pack and to be put on the list.
