The Plains, Gerald Murnane

Fuck me. I've just stumbled belatedly upon the most interesting Australian writer alive, and he apparently lives just down the road from me. I'll have to start a thread, but for now suffice to say that you MUST read some stuff by Murnane. Incredible. Brings to mind Borges and Calvino.

The Zookeeper's War, Steven Conte

Meh.

This won a major award here in Australia last year, but the best I can say about it is that it's competent.

The Journalist, Harry Mathews.
Really excellent; multi-layered enough to be rewarding for both casual reading and rigorous scrutiny; I'll have to search out more Mathews now.

One of the substantial works by the American Oulipian I haven't gotten to yet ...

If you're ok with reading editions, the early novels are collected in "The Sinking of Odradek Stadium and other novels" (Tlooth & The Conversions) ... Dalkey is doing yeoman service in making him available.

Harry Matthews is the guy i've always meant to read in the Dalkey ed. One of the most switched on and generous Spiral guys is a big Harry Matthews fan. Next year or perhaps for Christmas
