What is the rules about using SB drawing in publications? I saw in a Taiwanese defence magazine using the SB drawing of AU version of Daring Class (without credit) to explain thepossibility for future Daring Class modification.

Ooooohhhhh, that's gonna be fun. That would involve a whole mess of stuff I doubt Colo and Golly are really prepared to delve into, especially financially.

But yeah, that is a real bitch move of that magazine.

I am not a Lawyer:

The question that I imagine would come up is this:

Do the current Shipbucket Fair Use Rules apply to images posted on the board, but not on the site?

If they do, then there is a case, if they don't then the case switches to the person who drew the images.

I would think the fair use agreement applies to EVERY SHIPBUCKET DRAWING, not just drawings on the site.

I'm not so sure Ian, because you don't own the board. Re-read the invisionfree ToS, and it's spelled out. If you want to be 100% sure that the content on the board is covered, we would need to move everything to a board that you own, on a server that you own/rent. If I wasn't about to take the summer of Math (DiffyQ, Linear Algebra, and Physics) I'd offer to help you out setting it up.

Plus, If I wanted to, I could do a shipbucket style drawing that is, follow all style guidelines and use no parts from the bucket, I could release it any which way I wanted to, under any license that I wanted, and you couldn't do squat, because I would not have done anything to fall under the fair use agreement.

It really comes down to how "Shipbucket Drawing" is defined.

The site is set up on a server my buddy rents, so that can be taken care of relatively easily. I've been toying about with the idea of switching to a new version of Invision Power Board or something similar but I'm consistently put off by the cost. I've found all the new forum software packages provide far too much "stuff" and I quite like the ease and simplicity of the IF software.

I might try SMF or PHPBB, not sure though.

There's an even more fundamental problem in this case - do you really want to hunt down an overseas magazine publication, specifically in an area that has had a reputation for flagrantly ignoring copyright law and basically doing whatever the hell they feel like, and speaking the English words "cease" and "desist" is practically impossible for them, if you get what I mean?

Well, you're never going to get the database of all of the posts, so moving to IPB is rather silly.

In my experience SMF is good for smaller forums, but doesn't offer the expandability that phpBB offers. This is not to say that either one is bad, they are just targeted at different sets of users.

That's my main concern, if I move to another forum regardless of the software I won't be able to get all the old posts from this forum to there.

I'm not so sure...a few years ago I talked to someone about converting an IF to an IPB. You might want to ask someone at the IF support forum. It was a while ago, but I thought they said it was possible to carry over the database, you just have to jump through a few hoops.

On one of the forums I admin, we moved from phpBB to SMF and one of my tech guys migrated all the old posts to the new forum software. It's doable.

I'd caution you to be cautious of phpBB because I had a heck of a time with spambots penetrating phpBB's security. I'd often get one or two legitimate users per day, and between fifty to seventy spambots. I think we eventually knocked the number down to about ten for every legitimate user, but when we moved to SMF, the numbers inverted. Now I get one spambot every fifty or so human users.

We've used SMF for years at the Sea Powers forum and I've had no complaints.
