overall personality description:
Miho believes that she is the last true geisha. This is because she sticks to the old ways to a tee and is still very successful. Granted, she is trying hard to train her little sister in the old ways so that she actually isn't. As with most geisha, she is a completely different person while in her okiya than when she is out entertaining. To other geisha, she is seen as arrogant and ambitious. She doesn't really think that she is better than everyone else but it is easy for other women to believe that she is doing so.

While entertaining men at the tea houses, Miho seems very alluring and hard-to-get. She loves the performing part of being a geisha so she will always give in to a request to dance or play the shamisen. She generally feels much more comfortable around the men, even American men, in the tea houses than she does around other geisha or any other woman. She doesn't like Americans but is good at hiding her distaste when she is entertaining one. She never hides her disdain for American women, however.

One female that Miho has a soft-spot for is her little sister. She loves being a mentor. She feels that it is the only way that she can help the way of the true geisha live on. Also, she believes that being big sister to Hitomi Nakahara is the closest she will every get to being a mother. She also always like children and wanted one of her own. Miho is strict with Hitomi but is also kind She only wants what is best for her.

Miho doesn't believe in love and thinks that anyone who does is foolish. She has held this belief ever since her misuage was sold to a man she thought she was in love with but ended up treating her very badly. For this reason, she is not very particular about her danna as long as he has a lot of money and can support her. Granted, she is a little afraid to take one because she is afraid of having sex again. However money is very important to her so she will definitely accept a good offer. Also, she has always wanted to be a mother and she knows taking a danna would be the only way for her to do so.

Miho has been with the Sasoon okiya since before the war. For this reason, she thinks she is entitled to inherit it. She is rather angry that Aoi has yet to adopt her.

history:
Miho was born Amaya Yakamoto on April 10, 1925 to two loving parents. She was raised in traditional Japanese ways. Her parents always stressed manners and being respectful to others and to men. When she was young she had always admired the Geisha of Iiota. She loved their make-up and their beautiful kimono. When she was seven, her little sister was born. A year after that, on June 25, 1933, her family's house was burned down in a terrible fire, killing both her parents. She thought it had killed her baby sister as well. Amaya was only eight years old.

Miho had barely made it out of the house alive. Now an orphan, Miho could do nothing but wander the streets. About a month after the fire, the geisha who was at that time the mother of the Sasoon okiya discovered her. One look at the poor starving orphan dressed in rags told the woman that she would grow into beauty who all the men would be after. This geisha took her in and she became a maidin the okiya and was immediately put in the geisha school. At that time, Aoi Sasoon was twenty-six and was already the daughter of the okiya.

At age thirteen, Amaya was ready to become a Maiko. Aoi agreed to become her big sister and it was then that Amaya became Miho. She immediately became successful and by the time she was fifteen, Aoi decided that it was time to sell her misuage. There was quite a bidding war for it and at the end of Miho became famous for having one of the most expensive misuages ever recorded. Miho was very excited about her misuage night because the man who had bought it was one she fancied herself in love with. However, the man treated her very roughly and every since, she has not believed in love. Soon after her misuage, in 1940, she became a full-fledged geisha.

Miho was not able to practice as a geisha for long, however, because in 1941, the Sasoon geisha house had to close because of pressures from the war. For the next five years, Miho had to work numerous odd jobs just to survive. It was a hard existence but she managed to get through it. When the war was over, she tried to Aoi. The eventually found each other and a year after the war ended, Sasoon Geisha house reopened. the former mother had died during the war so Aoi took up the role. It has now been running very successfully according to the old geisha ways for seven years. Much of this success is due to Miho's renewed popularity.
