Seriousrly, RPGs are a great way for forum members to communicate, and contribute to the life of the board - things are usually active if you have a good RPG.

If somebody is willing to write up a set of rules, with some good character-creation guidelines (No Forte clones, please!) and characters from the games only being controlled via the plotline or by the RPG master (so we can't have somebody playing as Rock or Blues - instead all players would be a person in the EXE world with an original Navi) this could be a great thing.

You know, I'd like that. Maybe I could dust off BondMan.

That'd be interesting, but you'd have to make a strict set of battling rules. Believe me, I've RP'd on a board with no battle rules and it wasn't fun. (I call down Forte, who I met in the Undersquare last Tuesday, and I launch Orbital Missile Strike!)

I'm not really staff on the forum (only to fix various mechanical problems on the rare occasions that StenMan needs help), but to answer just for answering's sake, I'll say that if you actually have the follow-through to do this then by all means you have my blessing.

Yes, this does sound like a pretty nice idea, and I do support it.... but before I set up a subforum for it, I would like you to explain your idea in a little bit more detail via PM please, LordHuffnPuff.

I do think that the idea is good, but I want to do everything I can to both keep everybody happy and avoid a flame-war.

Thank you.

Anyone else support the idea? If so, I may add one between now and X-mas/NewYears.

Consider me ambivalent on this one. We've tried to do RPGs before (in fact, I myself tried to start one on at least two separate occasions in the past) and they never really got off the ground, primarily because people couldn't agree on how to run the system (either a forum code-based game riddled with bugs that never worked, or a "I walk into the bar and shoot everyone with my Mega Buster and gain nine million EXP" on-your-honor sort of thing that... never worked).

I'm not sure it would hurt to have a well-grounded one-- in fact, I'd probably join up and go all at it myself, since I've never done an RPG before and it sounds like a ton of fun-- but at the same time, I think that if it was set up it would pretty much have to have at least three or so people maintaining it and making sure it didn't get abused; we'd almost have to turn off flood control for it to really thrive; and of course, assuming the rules and such aren't well defined we're going to have eighty Forte clones running around. In fact, I would almost have to beg that none of the official Rockman characters be allowed; either as summons-- "lol I use MegaMnSP R (atk 2sqr w/god blst of frndshp)" or as playable characters ("Hi, I'm MegaMan." "lol me 2" "hay guys im megaman the nut warrior" "lol hi" "omg weheres the doctor whiley" "I AM MEGAMAN THE ULTIMATE WORRIOR I AM NETNAVY OF LAN HIKARY AND I AM POWERFUL!!!! PROGRAM ADVANCE SWORD CANNON BLASTER PROGRAM ADVANCE! 1/2 HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!").

I think it's a great way for members to participate.

However, while I myself participated in several RPGs, I do have some things concerned.

There's always the problem of a god-mode character or move or SOME action that seems godly. It's very frustrating to deal with this.

The EXP system can be more of a number game than an actual RPG. If you have levels set for certain attributes, like how well your Navi fires a projectile weapon, for example, it's a bit hard to remember that those attributes are set at that particular level of power, etc.

It'll need a GOOD storyline to run on. Or, just a freestyled storyline of sorts where you can battle Navi's for currency to buy new weapons, armors, etc..? Think Zoids New Century Zero, where there was no real plotline besides from "be the best" or "beat them all".

Personally, I myself like pre-EXE stuff lol. While the use of chips to destroy your opponent may seem cool, I like the fact of using an actual weapon in the "real world" (think Legends, etc) to destroy. Also, having one "world" (not split up into reality and VIRTUAL reality) is much more simple. That way, you'll have one or less character to control.

:)

Something I've learned for forum RPGs:

On-your-honor style: best for small, closely knit communities, like RMS now.
Numbers-based semi-freestyle style: Best for medium sized communities, like PET-World back in the day.
Forum game interface style: Best for bigger communities, as long as you get all the bugs out!

The best RPG I've ever been in had a vague teaser, three members, and was the on-your-honor style, but it was less "beat everyone else" and more "beat the system" i.e. the Matrix.

Reiko, I like your idea of banning all canon characters.

What we need to do is keep out the n00bs until they get an idea of what it is; maybe a minimum meaningful post count or a required-reading rules thread?

Ooh! Idea! Instead of PvP setup, what about a focus on PvE? You know, have all PCs on one side and the puppetmasters on the other? Maybe even put PCs one one of two or so teams and then have a third team of the puppetmasters pop up to start things going.

Oh, and if this does happen, I'm reinitializing BondMan and SoundMan.

Say, whatever happened to that mascot of RMS? Wasn't it like two scantily clad Kobun girls or something?

They were a Mettaur and a Kobun, and they were appropriately clothed (one was wearing a sailor fuku [Ko-tan] and the other was cosplaying a miner [Met-tan]). I fell out of contact with the artist that drew them and we ended up taking RMS in a different direction, so basically I sponsored a contest for no really good reason.

A puppetmaster concept would be awesome, where the members fight against the RPG staff. If that was the target concept, I'd definitely step in from being unconcerned to actively participating, perhaps even helping set it up and run it. We could create a new criminal organization along the lines of the World Three or Gospel and their NetNavis could be something along the lines of the Robot Masters that were never picked from the classic games (Crash Man, Gemini Man, Hard Man, Wave Man, Crystal Man, and so on). Of course, that'd probably be a little similar to various other plots I've seen done, so we could alternate and do a classic-series one with Wily's new batch of Robot Masters (and the "puppetmasters" could each create one or two; Glass Man, Power Man, Razor Man, Hidden Man, Bolt Man, and so on).

@Ochitsuka: I appreciate your sentiment about DASH and pre-EXE stuff and can't say I disagree with you at all. EXE's a phenomenal series, but I am first and foremost a DASH fan. However, take it from someone who's been following this entire franchise closely for years-- a DASH RPG would be dead before it even started. I'd be absolutely appalled (and ridiculously delighted beyond belief) if our members could carry it through. As it is, I don't think an RPG fares too well for our small community anyway, but if we want the best chance of it being successful, it would have to be something the majority has enough knowledge to operate off of.

And, I'll admit, the EXE series was a little more complicated in terms of its plot (and a lot more convoluted, too, but that's a rant for another time), plus it has more source material to draw from. Our members are primarily EXE fans because-- and I mean let's face it-- the median age of the member group on this board is somewhere around eleven to thirteen years old. They can't help it that the Mega Man they grew up with is MegaMan.EXE-- it's just the way their age group fell.

Regardless though, if and I say this as a big if, we decide to do this, we're going to do it the right way.

I think those who really want to get this done should step forward so we can assess how many we can have helping us and then start having pow-wows about it-- and for the love of Mother Yuna I don't mean jump up and scream "count me in" and then all of a sudden you enter "eternal 365-day college finals mode". It's unfair to start up a huge project and then leave one guy holding the bag.

Heheheh. I've certainly never been on the "365-day college finals mode" end of the equation there!

CyberSpace Invaders Version 3.0
MegaMatt Battle Network
Phazon Core (anybody remember that one?)
The Final Story (I'll bet anybody 10,000 Zenny nobody remembers that one)
Duke Nukem Forever (oops, wrong list)
Welcome to the World (actually, that one wasn't my fault per se)
The Pokenation Battle League Version 2.0 (actually, not my fault either)
Cutting Room Floor (somebody might remember that one)
.hack//TRINITY: Alpha and .hack//TRINITY: Omega (I don't think I even spoke of this to anybody, so I don't think it counts)
Red vs. Blue: The Valhalla Chronicle (still in development, but so is Duke Nukem Forever)

*sweatdrop*

Regardless, I'd love to participate. My track record's gotten a lot better since then! Honest! And the new Legend Force is going up tomorrow! I promise!
