|PINBACKFREAK <<< the official pinback forum >>> > Concerts > Paris (2007) : attempting a video|
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Nov 17 2007, 12:31 AM|
| So, there is a project in Paris, about recording on video the Pinback show.
I'm directing it for free (http://myspace.com/jeanflipe). I've got my team.
The issue is not certain, no video will be shown on the web wihout the permission of the Pinback crew, so perhaps you'll never watch nothing.
Here is what's new at Day -5 :
It will not be an HD video-live. Doesn't matter. The team will be composed of 6 or 7 cameramen, it depends on La Maroquinerie (we must have enough places to work, and the show seems to be sold out, so perhaps I'll have to reduce the team), + 2 cameras on tripod. Total : 8 or 9 cameras. Each cameraman comes with his own material (pro, semi-pro), for free. Major party of them worked for me on other projects, other are friends, one is unknown to me but use to do this job well). They'll be paid by me only with beers, or milk. Can anybody tell me how much time a pinback show usually runs ? Thanks.
I failed in finding someone able to record the 19 tracks, it would cost me 500euros, and I'm not produced. The sound-engineer Kerry McDonald (he is the tour manager of Pinback too) will give me a stereo matrix mix, and I'll make it be mixed with the stereo-sound of a 'zoom' (property of Silvain Vanot).
Could be better. But still ok.
My most important problems are :
-the actual big strike in Fance wich paralyzes tubes and trains,
-the manner La Maroquinerie will treat us on monday (I called them, they are aware, I'll be tactful, and my team teemy, and I know a guy in).
I had the volition to record a sort of video-interview for this forum, with all the questions you wrote for them (topic 'Pinbackfreak Interview') ), but I have read somewhere that Rob and Crow don't like this sort of activity... so I cancelled.
That's all for the moment.

| And it seems that I found a guy to record the 19 tracks ....!
This is a GOOOD point.

| This morning I made a poo. I think I'm ready for tonight.
Thanks, hairy man!
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Nov 19 2007, 02:00 PM|
| Gooo !
Pictures soon !
|Posted by: jediroller Nov 19 2007, 02:37 PM|
Good luck for tonight.
Maybe I'm overextending myself here, but I have to ask: could we imagine a Forum Only Special Edition DVD?
I'd buy one.
|Posted by: pinbackfreak Nov 20 2007, 12:38 AM|
Haha, maybe you are jediroller
Let's see how the material will gonna look like.
Then let's see what Rob 'n Zach think about the stuff.
THEN, who knows we're all able to look at it.
Of course I'd buy one anyhow!

So how'd it go?

|Posted by: Jeanflipe Nov 20 2007, 01:26 PM|
I take the responsability to post these 4 pictures here. 4 pictures, it's not a big deal. But that's all !
One of the musician of Pinback put my videotapes in his ass but images seem to be still ok.
|Posted by: jediroller Nov 20 2007, 02:04 PM|
Nice pics, looks promising, if a bit dark. That's what your comment means, right?
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Nov 20 2007, 02:11 PM|
|Posted by: jediroller Nov 20 2007, 02:16 PM|
| You tease.
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Nov 21 2007, 01:33 AM|
| No, images seem to be ok. There are 8 cameras, near by all differents, so colors and contrasts are never really the same, but it was predicted and I can do something for this with post-prod. I made mistakes sometimes in my choices yesterday, but it was really a hard stuff to organize (sooo hard, and so uncomfortable, so so so frustrating and sometimes really displeasing (some completly unsynergistics 'fans', or a lightman who just treated me like a shit just before the beginning of the show, etc)) and it would (aurait pu) be so worse too.
I think some songs will rock more than others, depends of so many things wich are impossible to control during an event like this (the crowd, the light, the number of fans etc etc).
Actually I'm just starting to try to do something with one of the song in the beginning of the concert, to see what sort of video this show will give me. It's hard to tell how it will be to the end, if there is trully something creative to product.
The most important thing for me actually is the way the crew worked with me. That's stunning how much people you can put together without money, just because they have the same addiction (making live images). This sort of event, making a concert-video with so much people for free, especially in a town like Paris, where all is just about money, is a sort of exception, but it's possible, and it's reassuring.
|Posted by: jediroller Nov 21 2007, 02:36 AM|
| Yeah, it is heartwarming to see that there are still people willing to do something when they know there will be no money in it. Kudos to you for making this happen. It was obviously a lot of work.
|Posted by: drebin Nov 30 2007, 01:55 AM|
I was at the Paris concert and I would love to see the video Jeanflipe .
|Posted by: dtkach87 Dec 18 2007, 07:36 PM|
| Any update on this Live Pinback Video? I hope it comes together, cause some nights i just have a few drinks and watch a live concert on my laptop (Muse, Radiohead, Mars Volta). It would be awesome to have one from Pinback.
Keep us updated,
|Posted by: joris Dec 18 2007, 08:18 PM|
|Amazing pictures, amazing initiative!|
|Posted by: 6079 Jan 29 2008, 12:07 AM|
| That sounds amazing. With all the camcorders and the access to the tracks, this all sounds incredible.
I realize a thing like this can take MONTHS, when you have to rely on other people and post production issues, then we may never get permission to see it anyway . . . but it sounds awesome - as good or better than a professionally shot concert.
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Jan 30 2008, 10:12 PM|
| Yes, that's what I was thinking before I do it : it can be awesome, it can kicks ass, with 8 camcorders you can't muff it...
But it was savage, and it was impossible to control all the parameters.
Example on that show: at least 10 songs are completly fucked by the light.
So it can be a total failure, even if you got 8 camcorders.
It was, you can be sure of that.
But I think you'll see a song...
|Posted by: 6079 Feb 7 2008, 12:07 AM|
|Did you get the audio tracks like you had described? When I asked their sound man if they allowed soundboard access, he said no.|
|Posted by: 6079 Mar 8 2008, 09:03 PM|
| "...and have been trying to mix a live Pinback show which was filmed in France and is looking suprisingly good so far."
A promising development from Rob's Myspace blog today.
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Mar 19 2008, 12:40 AM|
| Hello 6079. My 'ingénieur du son' (sorry) had access to the soundboard but it was a special occasion, because of the thing i was doing, so...
Still working on it.
Thanks for your intérêt (i'm loosing my english), 6.

|Posted by: totheinnocent Apr 4 2008, 03:48 AM|
I'm ecstatic that a Pinback live show is in the works...that's incredible. I wonder if Rob and Zach will officialize it and possibly mass produce it (sell at shows, pinback.com, etc)
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Apr 4 2008, 04:32 AM|
| No !
Just some little and humble internet songs.
For fans !

Either way, anything Pinback related perks my ears up...!
|Posted by: pinbackfreak Apr 7 2008, 01:34 PM|
| Yeah JF, keep on doing that stuff. FINISH it!
It's awesome. And the easy time on the forum will be a short period.
Will blow up again, so more freaks want it!

| Thanks guys, there are two songs live on the myspace of Pinback, check it.
Live from Fuel TV, eh eh.
|Posted by: pinbackfreak Apr 10 2008, 07:52 AM|
| OK thanx JF, didn't see it until now. Cool.
But not far as cool as your stuff!
(for the others I saw a bit of it)
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Apr 12 2008, 04:24 AM|
| Made quickly something this week for my dvd-book (I'm actually searching a job).
On some Hella music.
A 1 minute MESS to ''show'' 10 little videos I directed/edited or being edited :
|Posted by: x9x9x9x9x9 Apr 13 2008, 05:06 AM|
|that was AWESOME!|
|Posted by: pinbackfreak Apr 13 2008, 09:36 AM|
| MAN, JF, this is truly great!!!
Oh wow, this was Hella? Damned I thought I got most of rob "side"-projects' CDs today... NOT...
Anyway, I would have 1 suggestion: all the material is looking very natural.
My choice with this tempo en this music would be to do more with that.
So I'm talkin' about more distortion, contrast, deeper colourings, cuttings whatever etc... EXTREMER!
Like a nightmare orso. More abstract.
But the movie is very, very very good I think, so it could be one of your trademarks,
OK, but then I would choose a slower tempo for the movie.
Again, this was only a suggestion, I hope it inspires you to do anything with it. If not at all, also OK.
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Apr 14 2008, 10:33 PM|
| Thanks x9x9x9x9 !
You want nightmare Antoine ?
I thought about to put some porno to dramatize a little bit this minute but a friend of mine told me to not do that... true story.
I would like to make a metal concert with some experimentations like this in the editing. Genghis tron would be a great band for that.
I think i'll not change anything, cause i have sadly not enough time actually, and it was just a quick introduction for the dvd book, just to show i can edit fast, not really art.. But thanks for your tips. Ill try to make another project like this one day (this one is the second one), but i need a lot of images to do this, and a good idea too.
|Posted by: pinbackfreak Apr 15 2008, 10:25 PM|
| So no JF, this will do perfect for now.
As I said, great stuff!!!
But 21EoR has a song coming up on CTW pt. 4 which is "Nightmare's Over" ...
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Apr 18 2008, 09:15 PM|

| GREAT GREAT GREAT!
Nice job, and thanks!
|Posted by: 6079 Apr 22 2008, 11:33 PM|
| It's nothing short of amazing. It has a very dark and dramatic tone with all the closeups and lighting, of course.
It was worth the wait! Great fucking job! Thanks for having the initiative to make not just a video, but the BEST video for a band that sorely deserves more works like this.
|Posted by: alovelyfadeout Apr 23 2008, 01:03 AM|
I thought that was going to be another one of those porno spam messages when I read the first line haha. funny

Video fits perfectly to atmos... wow. Well done.
ps Did you hear about Pinback coming to Dour and Cactus festival 2008?
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Apr 24 2008, 12:02 AM|
I've got one, two, or three more possible songs....
And I have to ask to the band first if that's possible.
One of them is over now, i think i just need the mix and it's ok.
The second one is beeing finished, just some problems of colorimetry.
The third, don't know yet.
No, you learned it to me, I'm surprised.
Dour is big, it's cool.

|Posted by: pinbackfreak Apr 25 2008, 12:28 PM|
|Indeed, it's a nice pic of Zach, but there's no link to the video...|
|Posted by: jediroller Apr 25 2008, 01:26 PM|
| Hey, I saw your vid on the Noise mag website. Do you know these guys well? Did you do it just to remind me that I still haven't posted the Rob interview they did in #4?
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Apr 25 2008, 02:03 PM|
| Well, the viewers number for the Boo video was already going down, so to make it exist 2 or 3 days more I emailed them.
And to remind you that you can first post the Rob interview in his french version.
(Are you sure there is no link to the video ?)

|Posted by: x9x9x9x9x9 Jun 30 2008, 03:14 AM|
|you used to have another song on your vimeo. I don't remember what song but it was AMAZING!!|
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Jun 30 2008, 03:41 AM|
| I think you talk about "bouquet"; i had forgotten to put a password on it, so some people watched it. It was not a complete version, there were big problems. But it was well performed, yes.
Edit : well i just checked it just after writing my answer and yes, it's near by ok, I'll see what I can do with it.
|Posted by: x9x9x9x9x9 Jun 30 2008, 09:55 AM|

Can't find any new Pinback stuff on your MySpace or Vimeo...
Did I miss something?

|You didn't. I'll put a word on the forum when it's uploaded.|
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Aug 19 2008, 06:59 PM|
| I share this video until God tell me to not share it.
It is mixed by myself, so be kind.
I'll change colors a little bit tonight or tomorrow, and the sound too if ever you think it really has to be remixed (edit : the mix is shitty, why : too much voices ?).
I can't check the upload yet, I have to move (Batman), but it must be ok : ok to watch, not a masterpiece.
The video is uploaded first on vimeo (to replace it on the same page with a better version later) :
Feel free to insult me, I'll check the forum when I come back.
|Posted by: jediroller Aug 19 2008, 07:45 PM|

Thanks x9x9x9x9x9, Grey Matter Machine, Blanco Diablo (what is your myspace page ?) and Jediroller.
That's nice, but I will need so much more insults if you want me to complet and share this week the 3rd video...
|Posted by: 6079 Aug 20 2008, 09:27 AM|
| It's pretty damn amazing. I mean it.
You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. We all appreciate what you're doing, and I can't imagine the task of editing a band that you love, with 7 or 8 different angles to choose from. That's a lot of pressure and work.
I really like it. The only suggestion I have, since you asked, is some of the close-ups of the guitar player and keyboard player seem a little jarring. You always see a setup shot in film and television, before a closeup usually, to orientate you to the area. But I don't know if you have an option of using a medium shot of them before that closeup, because it seems like a lot of your camera operators were at the front of the stage and could only get those closeups. It just sort of helps the flow and continuity of the presentation to sequence things like that, but you can still jump around - close and far - if done artistically. And I think you've done a great job with it.
The audio sounded mixed very well to me. If you were concerned the vocals were too high, I think it was fine. Pinback's live sound seems to favor the vocals over the instruments in my experience.
Or if you meant the crowd noise, that sounded fine too. Whatever was an accurate presentation of what happened - color and lighting included - isn't something I'd expect you to change.
So once again, great job, thanks for sharing it and putting so much work into it. I hope you still have the time and patience to keep going with it, because you've got the best footage of Pinback to date and we all appreciate it. Take your time and don't go crazy, though.
|Posted by: pinbackfreak Aug 20 2008, 09:30 AM|
Absolutely GREAT, FANTASTIC, A-MA-ZING!
You fuckin' moron.
You son of a whore.
(who was that in the Goblin Cock topic complaining? OK, I take these nasty words here back...)
Thanx JF for sharing this one!
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Aug 20 2008, 12:21 PM|
| 6079 :
You're right for the editing, that's the point. But only 4-5 cams have been used on this one because of technical problems, and unfortunately not the more interesting one. So not a lot of point of view. I don't have lateral cam, too much "front" cam often shooting the same things, with near by the same point of view, too much shoot on rob and zach, etc. The two lateral keyboard were near by impossible to shoot during the whole concert because of the extrem promiscuity. So the result is not immersive and a little bit boring.
I used all the 3/4-front middle-plan and all the few close-up i had (and some fakes sometimes) to put some rythm. But spacialy, it was impossible to do something coherent.
(I have difficulties to write technicals stuffs in english, good luck for the translation.)
You'll tell me for the next vid, it's very different.
You heard the last version of the mix, I have remixed the sound, that's why vocals (not the crowd, the rob and zack vocals) are ok now, yes.
I'll just change a little bit the colorimetry and some cut before I definitly post it on youteub.
I love the footage from Amoeba.
Thanks for yout long post 6079 !
Fuck a lot !

| Isn't it sad to waste such a beautiful piece of work by submitting it to YouTube's crappy compression?

|That was awesome. but I don't know what to think about it being in black and white.|
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Aug 23 2008, 09:40 PM|
Impossible to make a good colorometry. I absolutly needed to use all the cam to edit properly microtonic, and the only way to get them all going well together was to do white and black.
|Posted by: alovelyfadeout Aug 23 2008, 10:45 PM|
| I second the motion to have a DVD including all the videos. I would also pay for it.
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Aug 24 2008, 12:02 AM|
I'm not the boss, and I want it to be shared for free as it was anticipated with the band.
Perhaps I will share later the song
Furthermore I'm actually thinking about stopping editing this concert, because it's completely depressing me.
I have been near by making a truely cool video, the tripoli one, but 1/4 of it is shit.... sooo bad ! Soooo so so bad....
Boo was ok, I was happy to share it with you.
But Non-Photo Blue has problems, it is a little boring and his colorimetry is faulty, so I can't like it, and Microtonic is awfull on internet, that's a mess to share it like this and I'll probably delete the youtube version.
|Posted by: alovelyfadeout Aug 24 2008, 12:30 AM|
|please please please share the tripoli one anyways... even if you just PM it to me, it's my favorite song of the moment and I would LOVE to see it... S'il vous plait!|
|Posted by: x9x9x9x9x9 Aug 24 2008, 02:32 AM|
|I will fucking fly to Europe to help you finish this shit. It's to damn good to just give up on.|
|Posted by: 6079 Aug 24 2008, 09:29 AM|
| I understand.
This project is your baby, but it's misbehaving. You could give it up for adoption or send it military school, metaphorically speaking. Meaning, you could just post the audio, as that all sounds really great, on archive.org or somewhere like that.
Or you could just post the wide cam shot, so we have something.
Or you could upload a few different angles and let whoever wants them make a version. Although it's probably over a hundred GBs, so it'd be pretty hard to transfer it online or through the mail without being a huge hassle.
Just some thoughts.
Tripoli's a great song. That'd be nice. Either that or Prog would be my pick for another video.
|Posted by: pinbackfreak Aug 24 2008, 11:42 AM|
| OH NO JF, don't stop!
Sounds to me that you only want the perfect thing?
I can understand that. Well the other 2 vid's were quite perfect indeed.
But we pinbackfreaks here want more, NEED more. You'll make us all happy.
Allthough I can understand your frustration.
Keep it up!
Greetz from za Pinbackfreak!

| JP: look at all the other Pinback video that's out there. There is nothing that comes anywhere NEAR the quality of your videos. While they may not be up to your standards, to my untrained (but critical) eyes, they are professional quality, and exceptionally well made. Really excellent! My only complaint (which has nothing to do with you) is that it's not their best vocal performance. But I would encourage you to take a break and then make the best of what you've got. It will be the best Pinback footage out there, BY A MILE!
Alternately, just come on out to the US for their upcoming tour and grab more footage!
|Posted by: pinbackfreak Aug 24 2008, 06:02 PM|
|Indeed BY A MILE!!! (At Least)|

| Myself :
It means nothing. I was writing : perhaps I will share two or three songs via rapidshare, for those who want good .avi versions of the video.
Myself again :
I made a mistake. The song I was writing about is Loro. The band plays it very well, and the public is totally in and the result very smooth.
Wow...Do you have some porn ?
It would really be a pain in my ass.
...I can't legally do that.
grey matter machine :
Cool. If was was billionnaire, I would totally do that.
The Amoeba one are really good, really smooth. Far better than the Full TV videos. But no songs from AOTS in.
I'll be back.

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=S9pr61BZ-20&fmt=6 edit : I reuploaded, the quality option actually doesn't work)
It's a quick work, material was dark and limited (a few angles). Wasn't sure to share this, but it's that song, so... Later we'll make a selection of a few videos which, we think, deserve to stay on youtube and vimeo.

|Are You going to release a DVD, or a Private DVD just for this forum or anything of that nature? If so I would REALLY love to get or purchase a copy.|
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Dec 16 2008, 10:09 PM|
| No DVD expected...
I'm re-working the entire show from the beginning, in a 4/3 format (no more 16/9), with a more realistic colorimetry, and a different editing. I let down just a few of them. The others will be butt-joined to become one video.
I can't share DVDs, but you can come in my home to watch all the stuff...
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Dec 16 2008, 10:25 PM|
| Rob Crow mixed "Boo" and "Rousseau". Perhaps he'll mix other videos.
If he does, I'll share them with you, be sure of that, as soon as I can.
(I'll delete the passworded-non-mixed songs in a few days)

|Posted by: pinbackfreak Sep 4 2011, 12:00 AM|
|Posted by: Jeanflipe Sep 19 2011, 10:48 PM|
| Hello guys (and girls ?.... no).
Well I passed from PC to Mac so all my work on the concert has disappeared. I mean, not the videos we shot, but the work I did on songs which were not finished yet.
One day I'll perhaps try to work on it again. Perhaps it will become like old good wine.
A friend of mine told me Pinback was touring in Paris, that's a good event.
......Wow Rob Crow has done a new album, cool.
Now begins my frustration.
|Posted by: pinbackfreak Sep 19 2011, 11:28 PM|
From PC to MAC: oh yes!
Your (unfinished) work disappeared: oh no!
Welcome back too!

Who didn't have shivers for 4:17 while watching this? Well I did.
Terrin is amazing here. Ahum, the rest too. F****** Hell. Love this song and performance.
Also, we're all curious if you were or are able to do any new edits JF!!!
Man, this was really good footage. We need it!
All the best!
