Title: Paris (2007) : attempting a video
Description: How it's going...

Jeanflipe - November 16, 2007 11:31 PM (GMT)
So, there is a project in Paris, about recording on video the Pinback show.
I'm directing it for free (www.myspace.com/jeanflipe). I've got my team.
The issue is not certain, no video will be shown on the web wihout the permission of the Pinback crew, so perhaps you'll never watch nothing.

Here is what's new at Day -5 :

Video :
It will not be an HD video-live. Doesn't matter. The team will be composed of 6 or 7 cameramen, it depends on La Maroquinerie (we must have enough places to work, and the show seems to be sold out, so perhaps I'll have to reduce the team), + 2 cameras on tripod. Total : 8 or 9 cameras. Each cameraman comes with his own material (pro, semi-pro), for free. Major party of them worked for me on other projects, other are friends, one is unknown to me but use to do this job well). They'll be paid by me only with beers, or milk. Can anybody tell me how much time a pinback show usually runs ? Thanks.

Sound :
I failed in finding someone able to record the 19 tracks, it would cost me 500euros, and I'm not produced. The sound-engineer Kerry McDonald (he is the tour manager of Pinback too) will give me a stereo matrix mix, and I'll make it be mixed with the stereo-sound of a 'zoom' (property of Silvain Vanot).
Could be better. But still ok.

My most important problems are :
-the actual big strike in Fance wich paralyzes tubes and trains,
-the manner La Maroquinerie will treat us on monday (I called them, they are aware, I'll be tactful, and my team teemy, and I know a guy in).

I had the volition to record a sort of video-interview for this forum, with all the questions you wrote for them (topic 'Pinbackfreak Interview') ), but I have read somewhere that Rob and Crow don't like this sort of activity... so I cancelled.

That's all for the moment.

Good luck for tonight.

Maybe I'm overextending myself here, but I have to ask: could we imagine a Forum Only Special Edition DVD?

I'd buy one.

Haha, maybe you are jediroller :P
Let's see how the material will gonna look like.
Then let's see what Rob 'n Zach think about the stuff.

THEN, who knows we're all able to look at it.

Of course I'd buy one anyhow!

I take the responsability to post these 4 pictures here. 4 pictures, it's not a big deal. But that's all ! :ph43r:
One of the musician of Pinback put my videotapes in his ass but images seem to be still ok.

Nice pics, looks promising, if a bit dark. That's what your comment means, right?

jediroller - November 20, 2007 01:16 PM (GMT)
You tease.

Jeanflipe - November 21, 2007 12:33 AM (GMT)
No, images seem to be ok. There are 8 cameras, near by all differents, so colors and contrasts are never really the same, but it was predicted and I can do something for this with post-prod. I made mistakes sometimes in my choices yesterday, but it was really a hard stuff to organize (sooo hard, and so uncomfortable, so so so frustrating and sometimes really displeasing (some completly unsynergistics 'fans', or a lightman who just treated me like a shit just before the beginning of the show, etc)) and it would (aurait pu) be so worse too.
I think some songs will rock more than others, depends of so many things wich are impossible to control during an event like this (the crowd, the light, the number of fans etc etc).
Actually I'm just starting to try to do something with one of the song in the beginning of the concert, to see what sort of video this show will give me. It's hard to tell how it will be to the end, if there is trully something creative to product.
The most important thing for me actually is the way the crew worked with me. That's stunning how much people you can put together without money, just because they have the same addiction (making live images). This sort of event, making a concert-video with so much people for free, especially in a town like Paris, where all is just about money, is a sort of exception, but it's possible, and it's reassuring.

jediroller - November 21, 2007 01:36 AM (GMT)
Yeah, it is heartwarming to see that there are still people willing to do something when they know there will be no money in it. Kudos to you for making this happen. It was obviously a lot of work.

Hello,

I was at the Paris concert and I would love to see the video Jeanflipe .

dtkach87 - December 18, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)
Any update on this Live Pinback Video? I hope it comes together, cause some nights i just have a few drinks and watch a live concert on my laptop (Muse, Radiohead, Mars Volta). It would be awesome to have one from Pinback.

Keep us updated,
David

joris - December 18, 2007 07:18 PM (GMT)
Amazing pictures, amazing initiative! :) :) :)

6079 - January 28, 2008 11:07 PM (GMT)
That sounds amazing. With all the camcorders and the access to the tracks, this all sounds incredible.
I realize a thing like this can take MONTHS, when you have to rely on other people and post production issues, then we may never get permission to see it anyway . . . but it sounds awesome - as good or better than a professionally shot concert.

Jeanflipe - January 30, 2008 09:12 PM (GMT)
Yes, that's what I was thinking before I do it : it can be awesome, it can kicks ass, with 8 camcorders you can't muff it...
But it was savage, and it was impossible to control all the parameters.
Example on that show: at least 10 songs are completly fucked by the light.
So it can be a total failure, even if you got 8 camcorders.
It was, you can be sure of that.
...
But I think you'll see a song...

6079 - February 6, 2008 11:07 PM (GMT)
Did you get the audio tracks like you had described? When I asked their sound man if they allowed soundboard access, he said no.

6079 - March 8, 2008 08:03 PM (GMT)
"...and have been trying to mix a live Pinback show which was filmed in France and is looking suprisingly good so far."

A promising development from Rob's Myspace blog today.

Jeanflipe - March 18, 2008 11:40 PM (GMT)
Hello 6079. My 'ingénieur du son' (sorry) had access to the soundboard but it was a special occasion, because of the thing i was doing, so...
Still working on it.
Thanks for your intérêt (i'm loosing my english), 6.

pinbackfreak - April 3, 2008 09:58 AM (GMT)
still curious...

I'm ecstatic that a Pinback live show is in the works...that's incredible. I wonder if Rob and Zach will officialize it and possibly mass produce it (sell at shows, pinback.com, etc)

Jeanflipe - April 4, 2008 03:32 AM (GMT)
No !
Just some little and humble internet songs.
For fans !

Either way, anything Pinback related perks my ears up...!

pinbackfreak - April 7, 2008 12:34 PM (GMT)
Yeah JF, keep on doing that stuff. FINISH it!
It's awesome. And the easy time on the forum will be a short period.
Will blow up again, so more freaks want it!

I think many of us are patiently awaiting the completion of your work. We're all looking forward to it, but please take all the time you need. :)

Jeanflipe - April 9, 2008 11:18 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys, there are two songs live on the myspace of Pinback, check it.
Live from Fuel TV, eh eh.

pinbackfreak - April 10, 2008 06:52 AM (GMT)
OK thanx JF, didn't see it until now. Cool.
But not far as cool as your stuff!
(for the others I saw a bit of it)

Jeanflipe - April 12, 2008 03:24 AM (GMT)
Made quickly something this week for my dvd-book (I'm actually searching a job).
On some Hella music.
A 1 minute MESS to ''show'' 10 little videos I directed/edited or being edited :

or
http://www.myspace.com/jeanflipe

x9x9x9x9x9 - April 13, 2008 04:06 AM (GMT)
that was AWESOME!

pinbackfreak - April 13, 2008 08:36 AM (GMT)
MAN, JF, this is truly great!!!
Oh wow, this was Hella? Damned I thought I got most of rob "side"-projects' CDs today... NOT...

Anyway, I would have 1 suggestion: all the material is looking very natural.
My choice with this tempo en this music would be to do more with that.
So I'm talkin' about more distortion, contrast, deeper colourings, cuttings whatever etc... EXTREMER!
Like a nightmare orso. More abstract.

But the movie is very, very very good I think, so it could be one of your trademarks,
OK, but then I would choose a slower tempo for the movie.

Again, this was only a suggestion, I hope it inspires you to do anything with it. If not at all, also OK.

Take care.

Greetz

Jeanflipe - April 14, 2008 09:33 PM (GMT)
Thanks x9x9x9x9 !

You want nightmare Antoine ?
I thought about to put some porno to dramatize a little bit this minute but a friend of mine told me to not do that... true story.

I would like to make a metal concert with some experimentations like this in the editing. Genghis tron would be a great band for that.

I think i'll not change anything, cause i have sadly not enough time actually, and it was just a quick introduction for the dvd book, just to show i can edit fast, not really art.. But thanks for your tips. Ill try to make another project like this one day (this one is the second one), but i need a lot of images to do this, and a good idea too.

pinbackfreak - April 15, 2008 09:25 PM (GMT)
So no JF, this will do perfect for now.
As I said, great stuff!!!

But 21EoR has a song coming up on CTW pt. 4 which is "Nightmare's Over" ...
