Long centuries ago the Gods dwelt on Earth. They commanded their mighty magics and called their chosen people to their sides, creating mighty empires that spread out across the surface of the Earth, each ruling in their own era. For awhile each of the Mighty Gods was content with their Earthly Empire, but one by one they slowly lost interest. Earth, even with it's varied peoples, simply couldn't hold their attention.

As their interest waned, one by one the Old Gods abandoned Earth and their Empires faded and crumbled leaving behind only Myth, Legend, and the ruins and artifacts that have so enriched our histories. But the Old Gods did not simply vanish into obscurity.

Each and every one of the Gods sung about in Earth's Mythologies was driven to seek out a new world, one that held the excitement they had been unable to maintain on Earth. They were successful in their search, each setting their sights on a planet that held an abundance not only of varied peoples, but of magical power as well. Each God was thrilled to find the exact object of their wildest dreams! Imagine their horror and disappointment when they realized each and every one of their fellows who had once inhabited the Earth had made the same discovery, and each and every one had the same wish; to command the full power of all the world's people and magic.

Terrible was the war they wrought upon each other, each faction set against all the others with no less than absolute victory their only goal. Alliances were made and broken. But in the end no one faction could win out above all the others. In their immortal power, the Gods found themselves equals, unable to slay the armies of their enemies, unable to claim the greatest treasure that ever they had beheld.

And so the Old Gods of Earth turned their eyes on this new planet, dividing amongst themselves the people, drawing as many as they could to their worship and rebuilding their empires of old. A new war was about to begin, fought not by the Gods themselves but by the worshipers they ensnared.

Welcome to Lands of Myth and Magic, a world of danger and excitement in which the myths of old come to life once again. Kingdoms ruled by different Gods stand on the verge of war, alliances, betrayals and secret plots run rampant. Heathens that refuse to answer to any one God roam the lands stirring up trouble. No one can be certain what the next day will bring. There is adventure to be found for any who go in search of it!
The Rules:

1) Respect! Please respect other players, please respect the Staff/GMs! Everyone is welcome in Lands of Myth and Magic. If you have an outside problem with someone I ask that you please leave it at the door when you enter. The goal here is for everyone to have FUN!

2) No Godmoding! Lands of Myth and Magic defines Godmoding as any In Character (IC) action that puts another player at an unfair disadvantage and/or seizes control of a character that does not belong to the player making the action. Only a character’s creator can declare their character dead! There will be no forced PC deaths in Lands of Myth and Magic!

3) Plagiarism will not be tolerated. All characters must be originals.

4) Please post a character bio for all characters you wish to make PCs. For more information please read the rules for character creation. Please submit your character in the folder for the section to which you wish them to belong (EG: Norse characters are submitted in the Norse section). Character bios for PCs require approval for continuous play; however, you can begin playing a character while awaiting approval (GMs will try to be prompt). Play testing of a character before writing a bio is welcome. Once a character is approved for the section to which they belong, they are not limited to play in that section only. Characters may travel between the sections. Character approval for the home section stands for all sections of play.

5) Lands of Myth and Magic has a PG 13 rating. Swearing, within moderation, is fine. Due to the PG 13 rating and the terms of service for Invision boards, scenes of sexually explicit nature are not allowed to be posted on the boards. Please use good judgment when it comes to blood and gore; if you aren't sure, post a warning as a subtitle to the thread title.

6) No Spamming and no Flooding. Only regulars have standing permission to share links.

Discipline:
I'm a big fan of the Three Strikes System when it comes to rule breaking. You will receive ONE warning only. Please be aware that the GMs of each individual section reserve the right to make decisions that will affect their section. If my name is not listed as the GM of a section, I will NOT over-rule the section GM, so don't bother asking.

Please remember to have FUN! ^_^

Centaurs

user posted image

Creatures half man, half horse. Composed with the upper half of humans with the lower body and legs of horses. They range through all colors and sizes, just as horses do, though their geographical location seems to affect their physical attributes. They generally live in herds in wild areas but the occasional hermit or loner can be found. Both ferocious in combat and learned in skilled trade they are powerful warriors and wise healers. Unbeaten in their mastery of archery, children of other races are often sent to them for tutoring and individual centaurs are not unknown in human areas acting as healers and teachers of the young.

These creatures are available as a playable race.

Minotaurs

user posted image

Large, muscular creatures, half man and half bull. Living far away from large settled areas, these creatures often live in loosely knit groups or camps presided over by the strongest male as long as he can hold his power. Short tempered and easily angered it is unwise to insult one. Warlike and hostile, they are powerful in battle and dangerous enemies to make. They tend to live on the fringes of the Empire, much to the relief of the human populations.

Nymphs

Dryads

user posted image

Female tree nymphs that inhabit a myriad of different species of foliage. Long lived, they are however tied to the trees that are their homes and though they can attain human forms they are unable to stray far from their tree and so are generally seen sitting in the branches or merged with the plant itself. Often like young women, they can be precocious and teasing but turn feirce if their trees are threatened.

Naiads

user posted image

Nymphs who's element is freshwater, weither it be fountains, wells, springs, streams, or brooks. Like their cousins in the trees, Naiads are tied to the source of water she presides over and if the source dried up she would likewise die. Naiads can make their way to the sea, but cannot linger in salt water for long. Usually more mature seeming than their land bound relatives they are also harder to coax out.

Nereids

user posted image

Nymphs who reside in the open ocean. Not as often seen as other types of nymphs they are the daughters of lesser sea deities. They are more friendly than their other water dwelling cousins and are helpful to sailors struggling in stormy seas.

Pegasus

Intelligent, winged horses. They live in herds ranging all over the known Empire and groups can go from a few individuals to a far larger number. They are sometimes taken as beast animals by other races but do not adapt well to captivity and are not overly trusting of outsiders in general. They are formidable in combat and the stallions especially will fiercely fight for their territory. They vary in body type and can be any color natural horses take, but the most prized among themselves seems to be the white of their forebear. They are beloved of Poseidon/Neptune.

Satyrs

user posted image

Creatures with the upper torso of a human, but with the legs of a goat or of deer. Short and hale they wear usually small horns among croppings of thick curly hair atop their heads. Lighthearted and playful, these creatures usually make their homes in wooded areas somewhat removed from large human settlements. They are fond of food, drink, dancing, and music and are masters in the last. They are beloved of Pan and to a lesser extent, Dionysus/Bacchus.

These creatures are avaliable as a playable race.

Sirens

user posted image

Particularly dangerous nymphs, these creatures make their homes on the shores of outlying islands. Using their hypnotic song they lure passing ships to wreck on the rocks. They are females with the head of women and the bodies of birds. The islands where these creatures live are mostly documented by the Empire and seagoing ships are well advised to pass around them.

Cyclops

user posted image

A primordial race of giants, with only a single eye that rests in the center of their forehead. These creatures reside far from civilized settlements preferring island homes and isolated mountain caves where they are usually not bothered. They are solitary, even among their own kind and rarely meet for any reason. Strong, stubborn, and short tempered they are best left to their own devices.

Gorgons

user posted image

Vicious monsters who are thankfully very little seen by men. It is unknown just how many exist but it is not though to be many and they keep their lairs far from the homes of civilized men. The Gorgons are terrible female monsters with snakes for hair, fangs, brass hands, and a gaze that can turn anything it encounters to stone, even after death.

Harpies

user posted image

Winged bird women, cruel and horrible, these creatures are not a welcome sight to civilized men. They have crooked, sharp talons, an old womans ugly face and breasts and are opportunistic killers like vultures. They often taunt and stalk travelers, making journeys hampered by them a burden. They are easily driven off a sufficient show of force and those traveling in numbers need not fear them.

Hydra

user posted image

Large serpent like creatures who inhabit lakes and other large bodies of freshwater. Solitary but temperamental if provoked, their blood is a potent poison and they are able to breath noxious gas from their mouth/s. If residing in a lake close to a settlement they will often attack herds of cattle and villagers, prompting action to be taken to remove the creature. This can be tricky as each time its head is cut off two grown back in its place. The only way to stop this from happening is to cauterize the place where the head was before it has a chance to grow back.
