Long centuries ago the Gods dwelt on Earth. They commanded their mighty magics and called their chosen people to their sides, creating mighty empires that spread out across the surface of the Earth, each ruling in their own era. For awhile each of the Mighty Gods was content with their Earthly Empire, but one by one they slowly lost interest. Earth, even with it's varied peoples, simply couldn't hold their attention.

As their interest waned, one by one the Old Gods abandoned Earth and their Empires faded and crumbled leaving behind only Myth, Legend, and the ruins and artifacts that have so enriched our histories. But the Old Gods did not simply vanish into obscurity.

Each and every one of the Gods sung about in Earth's Mythologies was driven to seek out a new world, one that held the excitement they had been unable to maintain on Earth. They were successful in their search, each setting their sights on a planet that held an abundance not only of varied peoples, but of magical power as well. Each God was thrilled to find the exact object of their wildest dreams! Imagine their horror and disappointment when they realized each and every one of their fellows who had once inhabited the Earth had made the same discovery, and each and every one had the same wish; to command the full power of all the world's people and magic.

Terrible was the war they wrought upon each other, each faction set against all the others with no less than absolute victory their only goal. Alliances were made and broken. But in the end no one faction could win out above all the others. In their immortal power, the Gods found themselves equals, unable to slay the armies of their enemies, unable to claim the greatest treasure that ever they had beheld.

And so the Old Gods of Earth turned their eyes on this new planet, dividing amongst themselves the people, drawing as many as they could to their worship and rebuilding their empires of old. A new war was about to begin, fought not by the Gods themselves but by the worshipers they ensnared.

Welcome to Lands of Myth and Magic, a world of danger and excitement in which the myths of old come to life once again. Kingdoms ruled by different Gods stand on the verge of war, alliances, betrayals and secret plots run rampant. Heathens that refuse to answer to any one God roam the lands stirring up trouble. No one can be certain what the next day will bring. There is adventure to be found for any who go in search of it!
The Rules:

1) Respect! Please respect other players, please respect the Staff/GMs! Everyone is welcome in Lands of Myth and Magic. If you have an outside problem with someone I ask that you please leave it at the door when you enter. The goal here is for everyone to have FUN!

2) No Godmoding! Lands of Myth and Magic defines Godmoding as any In Character (IC) action that puts another player at an unfair disadvantage and/or seizes control of a character that does not belong to the player making the action. Only a character’s creator can declare their character dead! There will be no forced PC deaths in Lands of Myth and Magic!

3) Plagiarism will not be tolerated. All characters must be originals.

4) Please post a character bio for all characters you wish to make PCs. For more information please read the rules for character creation. Please submit your character in the folder for the section to which you wish them to belong (EG: Norse characters are submitted in the Norse section). Character bios for PCs require approval for continuous play; however, you can begin playing a character while awaiting approval (GMs will try to be prompt). Play testing of a character before writing a bio is welcome. Once a character is approved for the section to which they belong, they are not limited to play in that section only. Characters may travel between the sections. Character approval for the home section stands for all sections of play.

5) Lands of Myth and Magic has a PG 13 rating. Swearing, within moderation, is fine. Due to the PG 13 rating and the terms of service for Invision boards, scenes of sexually explicit nature are not allowed to be posted on the boards. Please use good judgment when it comes to blood and gore; if you aren't sure, post a warning as a subtitle to the thread title.

6) No Spamming and no Flooding. Only regulars have standing permission to share links.

Discipline:
I'm a big fan of the Three Strikes System when it comes to rule breaking. You will receive ONE warning only. Please be aware that the GMs of each individual section reserve the right to make decisions that will affect their section. If my name is not listed as the GM of a section, I will NOT over-rule the section GM, so don't bother asking.

Please remember to have FUN! ^_^

Kelpies:

user posted image

Dangerous, mischievous creatures, Kelpies should be avoided at all costs. In their natural forms they appear simply as harmless seaweed, but as soon as a hapless human or unsuspecting boat comes with in reach of their seaweed like tentacles they will find themselves ensnared and drawn under the water to certain doom. Kelpies are devious and highly intelligent. They are shape shifters, often taking on humanoid forms. The females will often sing like sirens to lure men to the waters, at which point they will take on their true form and drag them into the water. At times they will also take the form of a horse, diving into the water when a traveler mounts. As soon as they touch the water they can revert to their true form and drag the traveler to their doom. Kelpies usually only mate amongst themselves, half kelpie offspring are so rare as to be almost unheard of.

Selkies:

user posted image

Selkies at first appear to be like any other regular seal, they are special in that they can shed their skins. When they do so they are revealed as beautiful women and can walk on shore. It is a sometimes common practice among sea men to find and take the skins of a Selkie there-by forcing her to become their wife. A Selkie can be forced to be a very good wife but she will always be sad, longing for the sea. If she ever recovers her skin she will flea with it back to the seas. Selkies are the female offspring of mating with human or seal males. Human male offspring of Selkies, although they cannot take on the seal form, often have a deep longing for the sea.

Leviathans:

user posted image

Large, underwater creatures, Leviathans are best described as underwater dragons. They do not breath fire or ice or the like and they cannot walk on land. They spend most of their time underwater, rarely coming up to the surface. They feed for the most part off of other sea creatures but are not beyond attacking sailing ships, and usually they are large enough to sink them. Large, serpent like creatures, Leviathans usually have a pair of fins and a pair of arms. Since Leviathans spend their whole lives in the water and cannot survive on land there is no way for them to mate with any land bound creatures.

Dragons:

user posted image

Magestic creatures, Dragons are large, winged, lizard like creatures. Most of them tend to make their homes in caves high up in the mountains, though the exact location of a dragon's den depends on the kind of dragon that it is. Dragons have an a rather unhealthy attraction to any object that glitters or shines, and so they tend to have vast stockpiles of treasure, gold, jewels and fine weapons hidden deep within their caves. It is their penchant for stealing, and their terrible wrath for those who try to steal from them, that has given them their reputation among humans. Most humans believe dragons to be vile creatures with only greed and destruction in their heads, and it is for this reason that so many up and coming would-be knights make it their aim to slay a dragon and save a village, fair maiden, or liberate a vast horde of treasure. In truth, Dragons are wise creatures. Possessing very long life spans, they have gained the knowledge of the world and it's secrets. Dragons are powerful with the arts of magic, the exact form or element again depending on the type of dragon. Dragons are very particular about their mates, and though they might not mate for life, they don't tend to search for a new partner unless their chosen mate has died. The dragon mating ritual is among one of the most beautiful and breath-taking feats of nature, as the two entwine in the air and allow themselves to fall out of the sky, detaching and flying away moments before they crash into the ground. It is extremely rare for dragons to mate outside of their species, but not unheard of.

Unicorn:

user posted image user posted image

Unicorns resemble horses of pure white with a single long, spiraling golden or silver horn protruding from their forehead. There are several other characteristics, however, which set them apart from regular horses. Unicorns have cloven hooves, the beard of a billy goat and the tail of a lion. The blood of a unicorn is said to have miraculous healing powers, as is the horn on its head known as the ‘alicorn’. A unicorn’s horn is said to be able to neutralize any poison. Unicorns are fierce but good, selfless but solitary, mysterious and beautiful. They are all the way through creatures of purest good. It is considered an act of evil to bring harm to a unicorn and it is said that any who slay one will be cursed. It is believed that only the pure of heart and soul can attract and touch a unicorn.

Gryphons:

user posted image

Gryphons are graceful majestic creatures with the head, forequarters and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. Rulers of the sky, Gryphons are powerful creatures with intelligence and minds of their own. They prefer not to be used as beasts of burden, though they are not opposed to carrying a friend on their backs and they are also said to bare the chariot of the sun across the sky. Some rare few gryphons are built slightly differently with wings and forequarters similar to a falcon instead of an eagle, at times they are called ‘gryfalcons’ though they are really not that different from any other gryphon. Gryphons mate for life. If a Gryphon’s mate dies they make no attempt to search for another. Gryphon children are hatched from eggs about the size and shape of ostrich eggs. Gryphons tend to live in aeries, nests built in high places, such as along cliff faces, or in caves located in similarly high places. They dislike highly confined places or places that are located deep underground. It is extremely rare for Gryphons to mate outside their species.

Hyppogryphs:

user posted image

The extremely rare and curious offspring of a gryphon and a horse. The reason for the rarity of a Hyppogryph is that Gryphons tend to despise horses, regarding them in the same manor a dog might a cat. Hyppogryphs can best be described as follows: “One half is Horse with hooves and tail, The rest is Eagle, claws and nail.” Hyppogryphs have the rear quarters of a horse and the forequarters and wings of an eagle and are able to fly, though they lack the grace of their gryphon parents. All Hyppogryphs are sterile; meaning they cannot reproduce even with their own species.

Fairies:

user posted image

Fairies are small creatures but they are full of large amounts of magic. Fairies are generally small enough to fit in the palm of one’s hand. They appear to be very small humans with butterfly or insect type wings. Sometimes they even glow with an aura of magic. Often times the magic of a Fairy will correspond to a certain element. Their element determines their magical power and the color of their glow. The main elements they correspond to are Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, although there are rare fairies who have no elemental base. Also in very rare cases Fairies have a more specialized form of magic such as lightening or ice. Being so small fairies can only mate amongst themselves.

Spirit Folk:

Spirit Folk, also commonly known as Fae are similar to Fairies but are human sized. They are also highly elemental, taking on form and action according to the element they correspond with. Fire Fae are often spunky and mischievous with a short temper and hot anger. They live in hot places and can even take on the form of fire. Air Fae are often flighty, liking open spaces and breezy areas. They are usually calm and serious, but do not stay in one place too long. They can discorporate to air. Water Fae generally settle into one river or lake and spend their whole lives there. They can manipulate the water to take on a form but spend most of their time in water state. They cannot survive outside of water for very long. Usually they are wise and knowledgeable but hard to contact. Earth Fae are most common, they can be found in forests usually making their home in trees. They protect the forests and honour those who respect their homes, bringing mischief down on those who do not. They can take on the form of a tree or flower in order to hide and observe. Spirit Folk rarely mate with humans but it is quite obvious when they have. Their children are often born with strong magic, but cannot change their forms as the adults do. Their spirit folk ancestry is usually visible in the coloration of their skin and hair and dereliction towards certain places.

Sidhe:

user posted image

The Sidhe are the favored people of the The Tuatha Dé Danann. They are ‘God Touched’ and it is likely that somewhere, very far back in their bloodlines, they are directly descended from some of the Gods and Goddesses themselves. Known as “The Fair Folk” or simply “The Folk”, the Sidhe are a wise, kind people but are fiercely protective of the lands in which they dwell. It is best to treat them with kindness and respect as one is unlikely to survive their anger. The Sidhe are a stunningly beautiful people, even the men are considered to be beautiful. Generally the Sidhe live underground, under hills or mounds, but they also take up residence in woodland areas, especially areas rich in hawthorn trees. It is not unknown for Sidhe to intermix with humans.

Banshee:

user posted image

A type of fairy folk likely descended from the Sidhe, Banshee women are all in shades of grey, often seen wearing long black or grey cloaks. They have long fair hair of blonde, silver or white and have a tendency to comb it often. If one wanders upon an apparently randomly discarded comb it is best not to pick it up lest one invite the wrath of a Banshee who has placed it there to lure hapless humans into their territory. The wail of the Banshee is said to herald the death of any who hear it, and there are those who believe that the wail of the Banshee can actually cause death to those unfortunate enough to be ensnared in her traps.

Leprechauns:

user posted image

Small people who stand only between one and a half and two feet tall, Leprechauns at first appear to be jolly, friendly people. One should not be deceived, although they are often friendly and can serve as good hosts or throw magnificent parties, Leprechauns will never give anything for free. They could well be described as greedy as they have a thirst for all things golden, often making large hidden stockpiles of it and doing nothing that will not further enlarge said stock piles. Leprechauns are highly devious, often setting people up with harmless pranks. But beware! None should ever cross a leprechaun or they will quickly find themselves drawn into some not so harmless mischief. Leprechauns at times almost seem to be charmed, often making their way out of situations that seem hopeless or making gains when they stand only to lose something. They are able to reproduce with other humanoids, the sign that there is leprechaun blood in a family line is a short stature and incredible good luck.
