Long centuries ago the Gods dwelt on Earth. They commanded their mighty magics and called their chosen people to their sides, creating mighty empires that spread out across the surface of the Earth, each ruling in their own era. For awhile each of the Mighty Gods was content with their Earthly Empire, but one by one they slowly lost interest. Earth, even with it's varied peoples, simply couldn't hold their attention.

As their interest waned, one by one the Old Gods abandoned Earth and their Empires faded and crumbled leaving behind only Myth, Legend, and the ruins and artifacts that have so enriched our histories. But the Old Gods did not simply vanish into obscurity.

Each and every one of the Gods sung about in Earth's Mythologies was driven to seek out a new world, one that held the excitement they had been unable to maintain on Earth. They were successful in their search, each setting their sights on a planet that held an abundance not only of varied peoples, but of magical power as well. Each God was thrilled to find the exact object of their wildest dreams! Imagine their horror and disappointment when they realized each and every one of their fellows who had once inhabited the Earth had made the same discovery, and each and every one had the same wish; to command the full power of all the world's people and magic.

Terrible was the war they wrought upon each other, each faction set against all the others with no less than absolute victory their only goal. Alliances were made and broken. But in the end no one faction could win out above all the others. In their immortal power, the Gods found themselves equals, unable to slay the armies of their enemies, unable to claim the greatest treasure that ever they had beheld.

And so the Old Gods of Earth turned their eyes on this new planet, dividing amongst themselves the people, drawing as many as they could to their worship and rebuilding their empires of old. A new war was about to begin, fought not by the Gods themselves but by the worshipers they ensnared.

Welcome to Lands of Myth and Magic, a world of danger and excitement in which the myths of old come to life once again. Kingdoms ruled by different Gods stand on the verge of war, alliances, betrayals and secret plots run rampant. Heathens that refuse to answer to any one God roam the lands stirring up trouble. No one can be certain what the next day will bring. There is adventure to be found for any who go in search of it!
The Rules:

1) Respect! Please respect other players, please respect the Staff/GMs! Everyone is welcome in Lands of Myth and Magic. If you have an outside problem with someone I ask that you please leave it at the door when you enter. The goal here is for everyone to have FUN!

2) No Godmoding! Lands of Myth and Magic defines Godmoding as any In Character (IC) action that puts another player at an unfair disadvantage and/or seizes control of a character that does not belong to the player making the action. Only a character’s creator can declare their character dead! There will be no forced PC deaths in Lands of Myth and Magic!

3) Plagiarism will not be tolerated. All characters must be originals.

4) Please post a character bio for all characters you wish to make PCs. For more information please read the rules for character creation. Please submit your character in the folder for the section to which you wish them to belong (EG: Norse characters are submitted in the Norse section). Character bios for PCs require approval for continuous play; however, you can begin playing a character while awaiting approval (GMs will try to be prompt). Play testing of a character before writing a bio is welcome. Once a character is approved for the section to which they belong, they are not limited to play in that section only. Characters may travel between the sections. Character approval for the home section stands for all sections of play.

5) Lands of Myth and Magic has a PG 13 rating. Swearing, within moderation, is fine. Due to the PG 13 rating and the terms of service for Invision boards, scenes of sexually explicit nature are not allowed to be posted on the boards. Please use good judgment when it comes to blood and gore; if you aren't sure, post a warning as a subtitle to the thread title.

6) No Spamming and no Flooding. Only regulars have standing permission to share links.

Discipline:
I'm a big fan of the Three Strikes System when it comes to rule breaking. You will receive ONE warning only. Please be aware that the GMs of each individual section reserve the right to make decisions that will affect their section. If my name is not listed as the GM of a section, I will NOT over-rule the section GM, so don't bother asking.

Please remember to have FUN! ^_^

Dragons

user posted image

Dragons are the creatures most respected by the people, powerful entities that have their own laws and languages. They are extremely powerful in respect to magics and it is well known they have influence over the weather, rains, and bodies of water. Dragons are generally good and benevolent but their wrath, when incured, is unyeilding and widespread. It's unknown just how many dragons there are but the oldest and wisest of them preside over certain aspects of creation.

Tianlong - Celestial gaurdian of heavenly palaces.
Shenlong - Thunder dragon.
Fucanglong - Guardian of treasures.
Yinglong - Dragon of rains and floods.

These creatures are not available as a playable race.

Kirin

user posted image

Kirin's are rarely seen by humans but when they do appear they are said to always bring good fortune with them. The good man welcomes the kirin while the evil fear it's sight as it punishes the wicked. They are the second most highly reveared creature after dragons. Kirin are hooved and their bodytype most usually resembles a deer, though it is there any resemblance stops. The body is scaled instead of furred, the head most closely dragon like and a tail like a lion. Horns grow from its head and manes of thick hair grow down the neck. The relative age of a kirin can be guessed from it's horns, younger usually have only one horn while more grow as the kirin ages. Kirin are usually brightly colored, most often red, green, blue, or gold. Often they are some mixture of all.

These creatures are not available as a playable race.

Youkai

Youkai are demons and spirits that are usually found living away from humans, though there are some that choose to dwell near towns and other settlements. There are many different types of yokai.

Kappa

user posted image

Dwellers in ponds and lakes, kappa are smaller than the average human. They vary somewhat in apperance but their skin is usually varies from greyish green all the way to a dark green and their flesh feels like a frogs or toads, or in some cases more scaly like a tortoise. Their bodies are hairless though they often have matted oily hair on their heads and necks. Their hands and feet are usually webbed to help in swimming and while they're able to go on land to much time out of water isn't good for them. They are mischevious, curious of humans, and are prankplayers. They have a dangerous side as well and have been known to eat humans, especially children, but kappa can be befriended with gifts and honest behavior.

Oni

user posted image

Oni are large youkai that most often make their homes in the mountains away from humans. They resemble ogres and have tough skin usually bluish grey or reddish in color. They are quite terrifying to look at, with fanged mouths and sharp horns on their heads, claws and wild black hair. They wear only loincloths and their weapon of choice is a great iron club. People are well advised to steer clear of areas known to be populated by oni as they are tempremental and don't take well to humans wandering about their land. They have been known to eat the lone traveler or two if the mood strikes.

Tengu

user posted image

Tengu are spirits that most often dwell in the mountains and forests and though they are known to be dangerous they are often protective rather than hostile to humans who show them respect. There are two types of tengu, the first known as karasu appear to be great bird-men, half human and half crow, just as big as a man and able to fly. The second type known merely as tengu look like men but have red faces and extremely long noses. Both variations are only physically different and tend to share the same outlooks and mannerisms, they are powerful but prideful at the same time and take grave offense to insults. Tengu are fearsome warriors when they take up arms and some forests are sacred to them and those residing in those places will protect it from any wishing to do harm.

These creatures are available as playable.

Hengeyokai

Hengeyokai are a special breed of youkai in that they are all changing animals. There are many different types of hengeyokai but the most common are described below. All hengeyokai are able to take three forms, their full animal form, a fully human form, and a half form that is a mixture of the former two.

Kitsune

user posted image

Sly, cunning, and crafty, fox spirits are often known to trick humans into what they want. They are considered to be the most malevolent of the hengeyokai. Female kitsune are known for taking human form and showing themsleves to people more often then the males and they are always very beautiful when they do. They are spiteful when wronged and many a human has lost everything through the vengance of a fox. Kitsune are most often loners and do not tend to tolerate social groups well.

Bakeneko

user posted image

Cat spirits. Bakenkeo are very common and tend to live among humans, both in secret and in the open, more than any of the other changlings. They tend to be keen and quick and are known to take advantage of humans to slow to keep up with them.

Tanuki

user posted image

Racoon dog spirits. Gregarious and friendly, tanuki are usually well recieved by humans when they make themselves known. More wanderers than workers they still tell engaging stories and enjoy drink and festival. They tend to be somewhat absent-minded at times but humans who take advantage of a tanuki will often find themselves terribly unlucky.

These races are available as playable.

Guardian Spirits

Inugami

user posted image

Inugami are dog guardian spirits and are most commonly employed by individual families or clans. They appear as large dogs of varying color and can take an incorporal mist form to travel when they wish, becoming something like a ghost. They have a language of their own but they can speak the human tongue prefectly and are also adept at magics and combat, depending on the individual.

Shishi

user posted image

Shishi are the infamous lion-dogs, historical protectors of kings and palaces. A Shishi can only be called into the service of a very powerful family or place and the price for their protection is high. In the most important places, such as the imperial palace, a mated pair of shishi are contracted to guard instead of just one. They vary in color and in size though even the smallest of adults would be at least the size of a pony and the older adults are far bigger. Their fur is surprisingly soft but their talons are sharp enough to gouge through most anything. Shishi are focused more on physical combat angle then Inugami but there are those still powerful in the ways of magic.

These creatures are available for limited play. Contact Wuf for approval.

Jiang Shi

user posted image

A Jiang Shi is created when the soul of a deceased refuses to leave the body, causing the corpse to rise up and walk the earth. Jiang Shi are most often slow moving but they can kill creatures they catch by absorbing their life essence for themselves. Typically they have greenish white skin and white hair, and black razor sharp fingernails. They are normally mindless and can be evaded by holding ones breath as they pass by. They can be put to sleep with a talismin, a peice of paper with a special spell written on it. Jiang Shi are normally not a problem to most humans but on occassion when one survives long enough and steals the essense from enough people they tend to take on conciousness once more. Those that do are dangerous because they activily seek out life essence and are never good and it takes far more intense magic to stop them. A few powerful Jiang Shi warriors have arisen in the past and wreaked much havoc before they were stopped.

These creatures are available as a playable race.
