A man identified only as "Aki-boy" died after a shootout with the police early yesterday morning.

According to police reports, the drama began around 7.30 p.m. on Saturday after police officer, PC Kenny, of the San Juan Police Station, was about to make his way to his vehicle.

Kenny, police said, lost his footing, fell and hit his head as he was about to enter his vehicle. The officer, who at the time was in civilian wear, his colleagues believe, "blacked out" when he hit the ground. When he regained consciousness, PC Kenny realised his service weapon was missing and notified his colleagues.

A hunt for a suspect was conducted by officers of the Barataria CID and Task Force. Around 1 a.m. yesterday, officers confronted "Aki-boy" at Nicholasville, San Juan.

The suspect, police said, began shooting at the officers, who fired back. The suspect was wounded in the exchange on gunfire and was rushed to the Eric Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Officers say they also recovered PC Kenny's firearm.

Officers from the San Juan Police Station are continuing investigations.
