"You don't have to be 'into it' to be non-judgmental." Was that a word? If not, her argument was seriously losing it's strength.

Nathan rolled his eyes. "I don't think I'm being judgmental. Trust me, people die because of this stuff. I've seen it happen to one of my friends. That's the reason I'm so against it." He normally got along with people pretty well, but something about Shannyn just rubbed him the wrong way. He hated that she thought she was invincible or something. Why did everyone think that accidents would never happen to them? Accidents did happen, and one stupid choice could make someone's entire life end horribly.

"Wow, like I haven't heard that before," Shannyn said, rolling her eyes. "I love how everyone tells me the same thing and nothing happens. And yeah, I probably could've saved myself a lot of shit if I had listened to people, but...I didn't wanna," she said plainly. "After all, you don't get addicted to drugs and shit like that by listening to people. You don't get knocked up at 15 by listening to people. You don't become a stripper for drug money by listening to people. You don't flunk out of 11th grade by listening to people." Saying it out loud kind of made it all real, but Shannyn refused to back down.

Nate's eyes widened. "Damn. You are messed up, aren't you?"

He was one part impressed, two parts scared. He'd never met anyone who actually admitted to having problems like that out loud. Even if they had addictions or had gotten pregnant or gotten someone else pregnant or whatever other crap they'd gotten into, they didn't let on that they had a problem. They pretended everything was fine. As different and kind of freaky as it was that Shannyn had admitted to being so screwed up, it was also kind of cool of her.

"Gee, thanks," she said sarcastically, like she couldn't care less that this guy now knew more about her than...well, anyone else. She hadn't even told her best friends about being pregnant, and her sister didn't know she had worked at a strip club.

Even though she put up a cool front, she was positively shaking on the inside. Was she fucking insane? Shannyn had completely snapped, she was sure. Maybe it was the lack of drugs in her system or something, but all of a sudden, she didn't care anymore.

"Well, you have to admit that those things are all fairly messed up." Nathan knew he sounded fairly judgmental, but he was also pretty sure that he wasn't actually being judgmental. Even from a totally objective point of view, a pregnancy, drug addictions, failing a grade, and working at a strip club were messed-up things to do.

The truth was, he was worried about Shannyn. As much as this girl pissed him off, in a weird way, the conflict was exhilirating. He felt drawn to her--as screwy as it sounded, he wanted to fight with her. It was the most interesting thing he'd done in a long time.

Shannyn did her best to stare at him blankly. "I assume there was a point there that I failed to pick up on?" she said, trying to sound confident and sure of herself, even though it seemed as if Nathan really did hate her. "You're just stating the obvious."

"What, you thought normal people got pregnant?" Nathan rolled his eyes. Shannyn had to be playing dumb, because she obviously wasn't stupid. She had her issues, but lack of intelligence didn't appear to be one of them. So why was she acting like it was totally normal to have as many problems as she did? If she'd admit to it, maybe she could get help. Then again, she seemed to think she didn't need help. Maybe she was just insane. At this point, it wouldn't surprise him to hear that she was.

Shannyn rolled her eyes. What a stupid way to phrase that question. "My mom's fairly normal. My friends' moms...well, I can't say much for them, but at one point they were probably normal." If Nathan wanted to make a good argument, he should really work harder at it. Shannyn might have no interest in school or classes, but she wasn't a moron.

"I meant pregnant at fifteen," Nathan corrected himself, rolling his eyes and flushing simultaneously. Odd. Usually nothing made Nathan Callahan uncomfortable, but apparently Shannyn was one of the rare few who did. He hated that she could do that. It made him feel vulnerable, like at any moment she was going to start making fun of him. Although Shannyn really didn't seem like the type to make fun of people. She didn't seem malicious. Just...psycho. He meant psycho in the nicest possible way, of course.

"It's not totally uncommon. I can name two TV shows off the top of my head that have to do with teen pregnancy." She never watched either of them, because they were too goody-goody and totally sucked, but that had nothing to do with her actual point.

"Yeah, because it's just uncommon enough to be a novelty," Nathan insisted. "If everyone was doing it, it wouldn't be good TV because people would get bored with it." He was pretty sure he was right, anyway. His dad had once tried to explain this whole concept to him, and he'd gotten bored. He hoped he'd understood it enough to make a good argument now. Not that he cared what Shannyn thought. He just . . . wanted to make his point well.

"A novelty," Shannyn said, shaking her head. "What a joke." For the six months she had been pregnant, it wasn't a novelty. When Shannyn thought "novelty" she thought...stupid things. Like parties and cheap beer. Not having a fucking kid grow inside you.
