Seeking a bit of positive energy, it struck me that it can be a bit too easy to attack the sidestory works. What's more challenging and interesting is to ask the critics just what they would instead do to 'improve' them. That's the question I'm putting forward- how would you personally have handled the 00 sidestories? The one rule I'll add in attempt to keep things fair is you have to keep most of the main characters in general.

It's late here so I'll post my own thoughts tomorrow. But have at you!

I think I would've liked to see the manga sidestories less mecha-involved, as heretical as that may seem for a Gundam story. Many of 00F/00I's fights felt like they were forced in largely just to have a fight in that chapter, anyway. Taking the focus away from giant robot battling would allow more time to go into storyline, which could be better used to supplement the anime's.

For a random, silly example: perhaps 00F could've been something of a mystery novel. Early on it fleshes out world details, slowly delving into Alejandro's conspiracy as it unfolds in the anime. This would be a good place to involve details we've only heard about in passing by supplementary materials, like the execution of the Observers.

tl, dr; I'd prefer the manga served as a supplementary narrative rather than wacky anime adventures.

That's a rather good idea. There's alot of ideas we know answers exist for but weren't answered in the narrative, so using the sidestories to dip into them more consistently instead of going their own way would definitely be worthwhile.

I also agree that the sidestories as they are suffer from needing a pointless battle each chapter and that cutting these would only help. The mystery angle was one of my favourite factors of the main story, so dedicating full chapters to this and character development would work well.

Aside from the good suggestion by Homeless, I'd say make the sidestories less grand/encompassing in scale.

The ridiculousness of a sidestory characters and storylines one-upping the anime without ever affecting the animated media can get bothersome.
It's supposed to be a sidestory, after all..

Coupled with that the focus could be on events that have influenced the setting of the anime, yet aren't explained in detail, rather than have a concurrent storyline that again 'magically' has little to no effect on the anime.

Perhaps have a few stories revolve on side characters from the anime as opposed to featuring manga exclusive leads.
Anime sideshow characters tend to better bridge the world between a sidestory and the anime, I believe.

Stuff I would've liked to a 00-verse sidestory to explore for example:

- How did Lasse end up sick, and had it anything to do with him not ending as Exia's Gundam Meister?
I.E. Could either Ribbons and/or some nasty GN particle/Drive accident have lead to his condition, with Setsuna being a relatively hasty replacement?

Unsurpringly, I enjoy stuff like 00N, 00V, etc. more than 00F and 00I.

I sort of agree with most of these but I don't think much can be done about it. The sidestories are here to promote the gunpla afterall especially looking back at 00V Senki and 00I recently. I think their hands are just too tied up because the cooperate Bandai have the "Grand Plan" laid out already. And if what you guys told me about the sidestories being well received in Japan is true, then who would blame them for doing something good to advertising and popular.

I thought 00V and 00N did/is doing well though IMO, taking a more disjointed and more documentary approach to things a bit. Some of 00V Senki was okay too, though I emphasized with the word "some", usually if they're related to 00 but to hell if they're anything else. 00V elaborated some of the mecha interestingly, at least most of it anyways.

Mecha is fine but it makes it look like their all Master Chief or something instead of Helljumpers. I would not mind a support team but please your getting the Large Condensers and the outdated MS for a reason your not the "chosen ones" or anything. But I dont think enough freedom would ever be given to the authors for this or for that matter, no orders would be given for that.

But yeah, the ridiculousness is just astounding especially if their Fon related and his Gen 2 One Hit KO adventures. Its so bad to the point that 00F looks like roses compared to the much worst 00I.

I dont recall anything about Lasse and Exia's place though. Exia's Meister seat was just blocked on purpose by Ribbons because he wanted Set there. Grave cannot put any candidates on forth for Exia (Veda simply rejects it hastily). it was already blocked from early on while he was searching for Kyrios and Dynames Meisters some years prior to S1.

I just wish they make a side story to tell about how CB get set up. I sure like to know the beginning. Like all the original provider of the inovetors DNA data's.

They were all artificially designed I believed, from scratch. It's a separate case from the Trinities which have some Innovade DNA as well as some donors ones (from Mina's ancestors including, which spawned Nena). Of course, the Trinities were not Innovades themselves so they're case is separate.

From the sounds of things, the sidestories except 00F and 00I had the right idea; either cover what the animated series simply didn't have time to showcase(00P's pre-2300s setting, for instance), or flesh out the details regarding the technology of the show(00N and 00V). Personally, I'd like to see this taken to its logical conclusion with a series of stories focused on the Solar Power Wars and their leadup, as well as the interim period between S1 and S2(it *can't* be a bad idea to solidify the development course of the GN-X family, for example, and the formation of the ESF is something worth reading/watching, yes?) cool.gif

I also agree that seeing Celestial Being's formative years would be intriguing.
