Over the last few days, a rumour has emerged of a Gundam 00 movie. This is said to be a theatrical release which will serve as a sequel to the main show. Some have even speculated they might pair it with the long delayed SEED movie as part of the anniversary celebrations.

The same rumours also speak of at least one further TV special which will retell the existing story (I assume for season 2, since one was already done for season 1).

What do you think? Would you welcome this if true?

I'd welcome it if only to see the G00-verse in animated action one last time.

No.

I am plased with the First Season, wiht the Second season less so (only because I've not been able to catch up to the latest episodes--my fault). I don't think a movie of 00 will be much good, unless it shapes up to be something along the lines of CCA (i.e. works well for fans, but may lose some people unfamiliar with the original series), or like the Zeta Gundam "A New Translation" trilogy.

Personal opinion, I think (original) movies and Gundam normally don't mix well, story-wise. Most Gundam series require some build-up of story; we've seen F91 (which I loved, BTW), which didn't quite have enough 'build' time to show the story background and it's full impact, and at the same time not enough mecha action (IMHO) to please more action-oriented fans. A Gundam movie is going to have to sacrifice story or action (or both) in order to be enjoyed, and I don't know many scriptwriters who can keep both and -still- make it an enjoyable, standalone movie (I could be proven wrong).

To be honest, a 00 sequel would be far better if it followed in the footsteps of Endless Waltz, rather than Char's Counterattack, as has been noted. A theatrical film is all well and good, but it demands familiarity with the subject prequel material - something which doesn't spell good box office takings for most franchises (the exception being Star Wars, and we all remember those prequels). As iconic as the entire Gundam franchise may be in Japan, that doesn't guarantee that the cinema-going Japanese public are familiar with the plot and universe of 00. You can't make a box office smash on otaku alone, after all.

To use a (somewhat hypothetical) Western example, most people in the US and Europe are familiar with Star Trek as a franchise, but that doesn't mean they know the characters and setting of Deep Space Nine well enough to pay money to see a film version.

So! Back to the subject matter, any 00 sequel film would be better served following the Endless Waltz route of releasing a short OVA, which can be compiled into a film with some bonus scenes to justify a "Special Edition" release. Now, if that did well, they could well release it theatrically, but sending it straight to the cinema might not be viable. It all depends on how aware the average Japanese cinema-goer is of the 00 universe; if anyone has any idea on that, I'd be interested to know...

I'd help clean up your drool if I wasn't drowning in my own.

Man... I've just really enjoyed the animation of this series too... and you know that movie animation steps it up too... so that would just be orgasmic to see on screen!

I think that there's still an awful lot of room left in the 00verse for more stories, and if handled well a movie could do a good job of telling those stories. Of course, that depends on how complete a job the finale of the series does in wrapping up the loose ends. If its ends with an epilogue 'and everything was peaceful forever' or something (which is VERY unlikely, I know), than the movie won't have much to work with.

A follow up movie is pretty much confirmed now by a producer commenting on it in Animedia:

I'm not so much interested in whatever story they take, as I've generally been a Gundam fan to see big Mecha battles. Here's to hoping there's much of that to come! ::raises glass::

There's a rumour going around which is hopefully just a misconstrued fan joke. The rumour alledges that the movie will be a crossover with Code Geass. Of note is this:

QUOTE (Celestial Station radio show)
“As for the movie, it’s not a normal movie.” (Sougetsu)

I hope this rumour is just bunk. I've really enjoyed 00. Whilst I don't mind crossover games, officially crossing these two over in the movie...*shudders*

If only there was a way to describe the face I made when I read that, HellCat. A crossover with Code Geass? Surely, that can't be true. At least...I sure as hell hope not.

Keep in mind, there are also people saying that they'll meet up with Judau from ZZ, or that it'll play into Turn A's Dark History somehow, or . . . need I go on? Rumors are crazy things indeed.

In the realm of solid facts, the five green lights around Jupiter are most likely five new GN Drives. CB could be going to pick them up, but I've got a feeling that we're going to see our heroes fighting true GN Drive-equipped Gundams.

Maybe the movie will cover the guardians of CB Jupiter fighting against CB Earth on the grounds that they haven't completed the unification of Earth and thus failed The Plan... Who knows?

Do you think it's possible that the movie will deal with the "dialogues to come"? Part of me thinks that'd be a little two dimensional for 00. I think it would be something a little more complicated, y'know? I like the idea of there being a CB from Jupiter trying to cause a problem for CB of Earth.

Given the ending of #50, I'd say there is reason to have some optimism regarding the movie. It does look like there will be some new story, and a new look at some old back-story issues. I suppose we'll just have to wait, especially since Sunrise has decided to celebrate the 30th anniversary with....not much of anything, right now. dry.gif At any rate, I hope the TV production staff and cast returns for the movie. They did a first-rate job on making 00 a fun and engaging series to watch. The movie, in their hands, ought to be awesome.
