Title: How did you discover GO!GO!7188?

ssasami - August 8, 2007 04:05 PM (GMT)
I used to watch Hey!Hey!Hey! with a friend of mine on the international channel(now AZN). Gogo was on there doing C7 and I thought it was the coolest music I ever heard. I didn't know if they were called GO!GO!7188 or C7, since I could't understand Japanese. But with a little research I found them, and I went out and bought all their albums at Mitsuwa Marketplace, near my house. Tategami had just come out at that time. I guess The international channel was showing old episodes of Heyx3 or something, since C7 is obviously much older than that.

Project-J.net and Rockofjapan.com were very helpful to me finding out more on the greatest band of all-time :P

Yahiko - August 8, 2007 04:31 PM (GMT)
my friend (marcelol from the forum) sent me a link with Kinkyori Ren'ai PV.. XD and I liked it =D so early this year I began to download all their stuff and I plan to buy my first GO!GO! item when their 6th album is out. =D

are you from Japan? :o

ssasami - August 8, 2007 04:50 PM (GMT)
No, I'm I'm an Irish dude from Chicago, that has an unhealthy infatuation with Japan.

Yahiko - August 8, 2007 04:51 PM (GMT)
oh I thought so coz you said mitsuwa marketplace I thought it was in Japan -ui-

ssasami - August 8, 2007 04:54 PM (GMT)
Mitsuwa Marketplace is a Japanese grocery store in the northern suburbs of Chicago. There is a bookstore with a pretty small, but up to date CD section attached to it.

marcelol - August 8, 2007 09:06 PM (GMT)
I discover gogo in a randow download in soulseek,I founded jet!ninjin, and say "WTF this shit is very fucking good" and download all albuns, singles, shows, etc...

but... my hd as broken, and I lost all =/, except the shows (I burn all in dvd) and i'm still recovering everything

Yahiko - August 8, 2007 09:19 PM (GMT)
ah yeah... well after marcelol showed me kinkyori ren'ai .. I liked it but it got stucked. Then some months later I was searching for songs for Stepmania and searched randomly forr GO!GO!7188 and it came out with Jet nindin!! and It was really nice ... the second song I heard by them was nice also.. so I thought I should download more.. XD and btw, this ver. of jetnindin is a cover

vlumi - August 16, 2007 08:20 AM (GMT)
I happened to buy Parade online when it was released; I liked the cover, and I can rarely resist limited editions... :P Liked it (especially the live DVD) and searched a bit more material online, and (surpisingly) Jet Ninjin caught me. Downloaded all their discography, but have since then bought all their albums, singles, and DVDs - all great stuff!

Yahiko - August 16, 2007 10:51 AM (GMT)
whats parade dvd content? :o

Fat na Kare@SHIBUYA-AX 06/4/15, and some producer interview (which wasn't that interesting since I don't really understand Japanese..)

Macaroni-kun - August 17, 2007 11:45 PM (GMT)
projectj.net was my best friend back when I discovered J-pop.

I listened to JET ninjin, ukifune, aa seishun, and kimi dake ni ai wo. Oh, and ruri iro as well. Then I made a thread for them on JPM and DOWNLOADED THEIR STUFF!

huzzah

Kelly Renee - August 24, 2007 11:54 PM (GMT)
I was exploring google a few years back, and I saw a link called 'GO!GO!7188- Pepper Keibu.' I thought "Weird.." sooo... I clicked it. It took me to the ONLY gogo video on youtube at the time.. Pepper Keibu. and well.. I quickly became obsessed!

So yeah, I discovered them through youtube. (before the site was popular) and then started downloading albums and songs online soon after.

Sadako - August 25, 2007 06:47 PM (GMT)
Melli, my best friend^, sent me ukifune, i liked the guitar, than yuus voice, first i thought "omg.... what is THIS?" and than i listened to the song a second time.... and third time..... and i LOVED it!
i asked melli "who or where did you get this from?!?!"
she "tsuki (a visual kei fan and friend of us)"
and than i searched on google and youtube for more gogo-stuff. that was one year ago.... and now I'm here XD

Dana - August 26, 2007 09:35 AM (GMT)
ewww, go away with visual kei. (hey, that rhymes!)

Well, I discoveered GO!GO! a little over 3 years ago.. a friend of mine sent me Aa Seishun cause she thought it was 'funny' and I might like it too.
I liked it, but at that time I thought they were just a random Jpop group! *gasp* so I researched a bit, and soon found more and more of their songs - I liked every single song and quickly decided... this is my new favourite band!!

Project J was my best friend too!

and now, after three years I have finally completed my gogo collection... *tears in eye*

ok Hanna already said it^^
Tsuki, a friend, sent it one day and I first thought it was strange... but on the other hand it was great because it was so different from the music I've heard before... after I had heard some albums I liked them more and more and now they're one of my favorite bands^^

sumiandmasen - March 29, 2008 06:32 PM (GMT)
I was doing research on Japan Punk/Pop Culture and their name popped up, i was immediately drawn to their fashion style and their performance in videos, like C7 and Jetto Ninjin! (ジェットにんじん)then my research turn towards the band hahaha...

Jerkface - March 29, 2008 09:05 PM (GMT)
In a messageboard post about Japanese bands someone put up the entire Tategami album for download. Otona No Kusuri was the first song I ever heard from GO!GO! and I thought, "Oh thats kind of neat I guess, its like the song is on a constant loop." I wasn't convinced though, but luckily for me the next two songs i heard were Ukifune and Umashikamono which continue to be two of my favorite songs ever.

medusanyc - April 6, 2008 02:53 AM (GMT)
found out about them fairly recently when they came to the US for the second time and played the Knitting Factory in NYC. I instantly loved them and they became my favorite band. just check my last.fm page and you will see that ;) (same username)

too bad i didnt see them earlier in the year

Dana - April 6, 2008 10:53 AM (GMT)
be happy you saw them at least once XD *sigh*

Primushead - April 6, 2008 05:16 PM (GMT)
I could have sworn that I replied to this thread.

Anyway, I was on some Japanese music download forum and someone posted a crapload of random MP3s. One of which was Akai Sofa. I don't know what attracted me to download it, but, thankfully, I did. I loved the song and searched the internet for more. I came across this video most people have seen. And I've been a fan ever since.

Yahiko - April 6, 2008 05:41 PM (GMT)
LOOOL! this video is the killer tune! I also watched it after I first heard them

Sadako - April 6, 2008 06:50 PM (GMT)
It was my first, too, after one of my friends sent me ukifune mp3!

medusanyc - April 6, 2008 07:58 PM (GMT)
yes please!!

that was the song that did it for me at first

Kjetting - April 7, 2008 03:30 PM (GMT)
haha lol, that exact youtube video was the first go!go!7188 song i saw too. After randomly clicking on some dude on OiNK, i was curius in j-music, and i saw he was seeding Tatagami, so i searched some of the songs that was in that torrent on utube to see what it was. =D

jigenbakuda - April 15, 2008 10:52 AM (GMT)
Yahiko were you ever a member on batsu's forum? In the shiina ringo thread, by any chance? I remember your name from somewhere.

Anyways My girlfreiend sent me koi no uta on messenger and I loved it. I later realized (like 3 weeks ago) that koi no uta has the same progression as "canon in D" (the classical song), that is wnhy I liked it so much, lol. Well anyways, I looked on youtube heard some stuff, I was hooked. Then As soon as go rock came out I learned of j-pop suki. I downloaded the album, oh god it was splendid. Manatsu no dancehall stood out immediately. But anyways I listened to that albumk for a couple months then I finally downloaded me a nice discography and loved it. Then I went searching for a forum to discuss my new found obsession.

Wow, I never realized that. *d'oh* I just played both songs in my head and you're right!! Maybe this is why I like this song, too. Canon in D is so nice. But it always reminds me of Neon Genesis Evangelion... lol

Yahiko - April 16, 2008 05:19 PM (GMT)

I knew I saw that user name somewhere, lol.

@dana
Are there any other songs that borrow themes or progressions from other songs besides koi no uta?

me: Stuff nowadays is so boring, anything good to listen bro?
bro: Go!Go!7188
me: What a name!

10 minutes later

me: I declare my love for Go!Go!7188 is forever
bro: I knew it.

Man I never get to meet real people who listen to j-music. I wish could of been exposed like that. What song was it?

baboo - April 29, 2008 03:02 AM (GMT)
Ruriiro.

My bro is into the darker GoGo music. I'd later go for something ligher. That's why I'm sticking around now when his craze is now already over.

For the first time listener, I think the song is quite impressive. I let some heavy-metal guys listen and their jaw kinda dropped after knowing that the guitar player is Yuu.

jigenbakuda - April 29, 2008 11:45 PM (GMT)
Well I guess I am on the lighter side as well. I never listened to rock/alternative/metal stuff until I started listening to j-music. I want to say j-rock is better but I have nothing to compare it to. I was blown away after hearing some of gogo's stuff. I love their style! So I can understand that those guys were impressed, but was it only because she's a woman?

I have a question are there many non japanese female guitar players? (I mean successful and well respected, not the chick that lives next door.)

Heart is probably the biggest.

Lisa Loeb is pretty popular too.

There's a lot of indie acts that have female guitarists.

But yeah, it seems like the amount of female Japanese guitarists are definitely larger than Western female guitarists.

baboo - April 30, 2008 02:09 AM (GMT)
Somehow it always occurs to be that Western female guitarists always try to appear masculine in order to match up with their greasy hairy messy male peers.

Pardon the fashion too. Is it because I only come to know female guitarists in the late 80s and early 90s that all of them seem to love parading in flashy tight latex pants, big hair and bad makeup (excessive amount of mascara).

Yet, their skill is undeniably insane. My favourite would be Jeniver Battern. She totally wooed me with her LED wig(what ever that liminous thing is supposed to be) in her performance with Michael Jackson. Chek out Youtube for that !

I guess in the West, unless female guitarists can pull off thunder-speed shredding, crazy tapping, OMFG-fast sweep picking, their name will be unheared of.

However, Kim in Pixies is the exception. I find her somewhat like the old version of Akko.

That's also the reason why I like Asian female guitarists. They make the best use out of simplicity in their playing yet establisth an equally cool and unique style. (by "simplicity" I don't mean poor or of lower technical level. I just don't know the right word for that. In fact, Tokie's riff is very complex. But she manages to keep that complexity in control by agreesive repitition and does not let it run loose to become an long-winded one-man show). Asian guitarists appear more demure, mature and sophisticated. And they look normal XD.

Yet, I can't get used to watching some sweet-looking girls playing guitar. Last time I saw this Japanes band (Can't not remebber the name. Maria or something?) consisting of 6 girls with 2 glam-looking bassists. And that does not work for me. I think female guitarists should appear a little rough but not too much. Yuu's look is the best ! Cute and cool at the same time

Someone, please enlighten me with the new generation of female guitarists of this century please !

jigenbakuda - May 3, 2008 02:44 AM (GMT)
I do not know many female guitarist, but I know alot that play other things. Well I will list my short list...

mari (tsushimamire)-like punk lolita, tsushi is my favorite group.

maaya sskamoto- solo plays accustic guitar.

shiina ringo (solo/tokyo jihen)- quite a bad ass, lol I love her, but I heard she doesn't play guitar that well...genius composer though... (see I-NO from guitly gear to see the truth)

utada hikaru(solo)- plays accustic guitar.

All of benten's label...

I don't know... I can't think of anymore now. But yuu is my favorite. Yuu kicks just the right amount of rear...

What you heard is not true !!!

*Dusting Shiina Ringo shrine in my room*

THe lady is wicked. You must listen to her solo in Sounan. Some people get the wrong idea that Hirama is the only one playing all along. But our lady did contribute greatly to that awesome guitar duet.

DYnamite Out is a testimonial of our lady's awesome guitar skill.

OMG...I'm a little turned on everytime I talk about Shiina Ringo.

Acoustic = not really interested. Almost all singers can play acoustic. Utada Hikaru used to be cool but I don't like her anymore

Primushead - May 5, 2008 02:21 PM (GMT)
Ugh. Other than, like, two songs (Boku wa Kuma being one of them), I'm not a fan of Utada at all.

I haven't listened to her in a while, but YUI is a pretty kickin' guitarist too.

Well I am a huge ringo-hime fan. But just can not judge guitarist as I can not play myself.

For me, my fandom with UH started and ended with the amazingly beautiful Sakura PV.

YUI is admirable. But she needs to upgrade her look.

*I'm a frigging superficial fan*

Or I just find her not assertive enough.

I saw this Jpop female singer Yaida Hitomi who always poses with a guitar in her album cover. This fact irritates me a little but I listened to her once and I guess she was quite good.

Couldn't recall how she sounds like though.
