Yes chain mail can be used for costuming but it is not advised unless you want a heavy costume just the coif ( head covering) can weigh up to 15 pounds so take that idea and think of how heavy it would be on the chest area or other areas. There are other alternatives to metal chain mail like plastic chain mail which can be made with friendly plasic but the easiest way is with regualr chain mail maybe from aluminum rings and just keep wrapping a think wire around a pole about the thickness of a pencil or your pinky and then when you have reached the end make sure to make a cut on each of the rings bend one out put in a ring and bend it back in to create your mail.
