What did you think of Neville/Luna in DH?

From my perspective... well, it's funny, because (due to Neville's absence?) there wasn't actually a lot of scenes with the two of them together, and yet JKR could suddenly see N/L in this book. So I'm assuming the main thing behind her (almost-)change of heart would be Neville's development, you know?

There were some cute parts, though, I thought. Like you remember this scene in OotP?

QUOTE
"We were all in the DA together," said Neville quietly. "It was all supposed to be about fighting You-Know-Who, wasn't it? And this is the first chance we've had to do something real - or was that all just a game or something?"

"No - of course it wasn't - " said Harry impatiently.

"Then we should come too," said Neville simply. "We want to help."

"That's right," said Luna, smiling happily.

I can kind of see it reflected in this part of DH:

QUOTE
"Luna," said Harry distractedly, "what are you doing here? How did you - "

"I sent for her," said Neville, holding up the fake Galleon. "I promised her and Ginny that if you turned up I'd let them know. We all thought that if you came back, it would mean revolution. That we were going to overthrow Snape and the Carrows."

"Of course that's what it means," said Luna brightly. "Isn't it, Harry? We're going to fight them out of Hogwarts?"

And Neville and Luna have two scenes that kind of mirror each other, don't they?

QUOTE
"Just in case they're - busy - and you get the chance - "

"Kill the snake?"

"Kill the snake," Harry repeated.

"All right, Harry. You're okay, are you?"

"I'm fine. Thanks, Neville."

But Neville seized his wrist as Harry made to move on.

"We're all going to keep fighting, Harry. You know that?"

QUOTE
"That's right," said Luna, as if they were back in the Room of Requirement and this was simply spell practice for the DA. "That's right, Harry... come on, think of something happy..."

"Something happy?" he said, and his voice cracked.

"We're all still here," she whispered, "we're still fighting. Come on, now..."

There's also the whole "reforming the DA" thing (they spent the year sending secret messages to each other! =D), as well as the fact that after the battle, Ginny, Neville and Luna appear together to congratulate Harry... which kind of (if you're wearing your tinhat right!) makes it sound like Neville ended up with Luna after the snake pwning, doesn't it?

Anyway, what about you?

It's entirely possible that I missed this, but is it stated that Neville and Luna communicate via the same galleons that Hermione gave out during OotP? If so, I'm curious, because I thought that only the master coin (Hermione's) could change the dates and stuff.

On the other hand, it could be a different pair of Galleons, I suppose. Protean Charms are seventh year magic, I believe, so Neville might have learned them by now--or Luna, brilliant as ever, might have done so.

I wish JKR told us a bit more about the protean charm. Boo.

Neville makes it sound like they're the same ones?

QUOTE
"The only ones in real danger are the ones whose friends and relatives on the outside are giving trouble. They get taken hostage. Old Xeno Lovegood was getting a bit too outspoken in The Quibbler, so they dragged Luna off the train on the way back for Christmas."

"Neville, she's all right, we've seen her - "

"Yeah, I know, she managed to get a message to me."

From his pocket he pulled a golden coin, and Harry recognised it as one of the fake Galleons that Dumbledore's Army had used to send one another messages.

"These have been great," said Neville, beaming at Hermione. "The Carrows never rumbled how we were communicating, it drove them mad. We used to sneak out at night and put graffiti on the walls: Dumbledore's Army, Still Recruiting, stuff like that. Snape hates it."

And in OotP Hermione says this:

QUOTE
"We take one each, and when Harry sets the date of the next meeting he'll change the numbers on his coin, and because I've put a Protean Charm on all of them, they'll all change to mimic his."

It's weird, though, 'cause the rest of the DA only turn up at the end, whereas this seems to say they should have been getting messages right throughout the year along with Neville, Luna and Ginny. So... I don't know. This feels vaguely like maths to me, somehow (maths + me = fail.)

If it makes you feel better, JKR can't do math either (aka ages of Weasleys, etc.)...But still, that really makes me wonder about the coins. Because as you said, if Neville and Luna were sending messages, wouldn't the rest of the DA be getting them too? But as Hermione stated:

QUOTE

"We take one each, and when Harry sets the date of the next meeting he'll change the numbers on his coin, and because I've put a Protean Charm on all of them, they'll all change to mimic his."

So if Neville and Luna did anything to their coin, it shouldn't change anyone else's, because their coins were all charmed to change with Harry's coin, right? And messages with galleons? I imagine that could be slightly difficult...I mean, a date, okay. That can fit on a coin pretty easily.

Hm..

^ Oh, that would explain it! See, Hermione does make it sound like you could technically change the numbers on any coin and have all the others do the same, but I really can't think of any other way around the problem than your explanation...

The messages thing... I should imagine you could get an incredibly short one on there ("Hi Neville. Am okay. ILU xxx" tongue.gif), since I assume the coin allows letters as well as numbers.

I would assume letters can be on the galleons, since there are serial numbers on the coins that the Goblins put on there.

As for the messages bit, I still don't know. Because Harry's coin is the one all the other coins emulate--and didn't they burn for a moment before changing? If that's the case, how did no one else in the DA notice?

they'd also all have to have their coins on them to get the messages. that was why only neville and luna responded in HBP. though they all would have had them at the end though...gorp.

I love how neville luna and ginny restarted the DA. I was disappointed they didn't continue it in HBP. They must have spent a lot of time together planning and scheming and such, even if we didn't see it. wink.gif

^ I loved that, too! The Neville and Luna scene at the end of HBP always used to make me so sad, because it was so obvious that the DA meant more to them than anyone else... I'm just glad the secondary trio took matters into their own hands in the end. And you're right, they must've spent lots of time together up until Christmas - running a rebellion is hard work!

^ I saw hints of Dean/Luna, too, but I guess in the end she didn't marry Neville or Dean, so all that came to nothing (in canon, at least)... :/ I suppose she was making more friends? grin.gif

Of course, it's always possible that they gave out MORE fake galleons and one of the secondary trio's was the head one.

The thoughto f Neville and Luna (and Ginny...) all plotting together makes me all fluffy inside. You know?

*grin* Yeah, I do. I love the secondary trio to bits, and it was so nice to see them come back in DH after Neville and Luna had taken such a step back in HBP. I had really hoped Jo wouldn't waste all that build up - Harry needed to let his friends make their own decisions, you know, he had to stop thinking he'd got to do things alone. I kind of loved Neville's verbal smackdown, as well as the "we're going to keep fighting" scene. Makes me want to 'ship Harry/Neville grin.gif

Now that's a ship I haven't heard yet!

My goal is to invent a ship no one has yet created... But some might deem that impossible. -sigh- The shipping world is rather scary, isn't it? I'm glad N/L shippers are generally a peaceful tribe.

It's funny you say that, since I remember coming out of the OotP movie thinking, "Wow, you could really 'ship Luna with anyone and have it work, couldn't you?" grin.gif She's very 'shippable. It just so happens that Neville is awesome and so is she, I suppose :] Also, we have The Pull, heh (I AM NEVER GOING TO TIRE OF MENTIONING THAT. I promise it won't be at all irritating!)
