I have placed all the stories about Britney Spears 2007 VMA appearance in the Britney Spears Thread.

Even though Spears is mentioned a bit in this post, I'd like to keep as much of the Spears-centered commentary in the Spears thread as possible, rather than discuss her specifically in this thread.

MTV's VMAs: It doesn't get an worse than this
    Published on 9/10/2007
    by Elissa Bass

The MTV Video Music Awards had become so 5 minutes ago. So this year, the network that prides itself on shaking things up announced changes that would, execs hoped, shake things up.

After sitting through the entire excruciating 2 hours and 11 minutes last night, I’d say they shook it till its brains were scrambled.

The biggest deal of all, MTV said, was they were abandoning the age-old practice of re-airing the show 19 times a day. All I can say to that is, whew. No one needs to see that again.

Never mind the fact that I am old, and suburban and middle-class and white, and so had no idea who almost anyone on this show was. It didn’t matter. It was a mess.

[snip part about Britney Spears; I posted it in the Spears thread]

If you thought it couldn’t get worse, it did. Brit was followed by Sarah Silverman.

Now, I’m no saint, but even I think Silverman’s crassness crosses way over the funny line to really-not-funny. She begins taking potshots at poor Britney, who quite likely was crawling into a Jagermeister bottle at that moment, and then she moves onto Britney’s kids.

She was actually booed when she did her impersonation of Britney’s, uh, private parts. Imagine the MTV VMA audience booing you. Fire your agent.

There were “parties” going on throughout the hotel during the show, and they kept cutting to the parties so that we at home could see all the fun we were missing. Kanye had a party. Foo Fighters had a party. Fall Out Boy had a party. Justin had a party. Uh-huh.

I did enjoy Jennifer Garner proving that there is someone out there whiter than me. She announced the Best New Artist winner as Gym Class Fall Out, a hilarious amalgamation of Gym Class Heroes and Fall Out Boy.

Thank goodness for Chris Brown (whom I recognized from his appearance on Oprah last year; seriously). Honestly, the kid’s songs all sound like every other song out there right now, but I have never seen anyone move his body the way this guy does. He is an amazing performer. He made Justin Timberlake feel old, Pete’s sake.

How about you? Did you soldier through this pop culture car wreck, or did you call it a night?
Washington Post Story about 2007 VMAs
About as controversial as it got (barring Silverman's public hanging of Spears) was when multiple winner Justin Timberlake admonished the network, twice, to "play more damn videos."

Like Spears, the awards show never seemed to hit a groove. MTV was hoping to reinvent the program, which has dipped in the ratings over the past five years, and opted to spread the action throughout Las Vegas's Palms hotel and casino.
Spears bombs, but MTV awards show a blast

.... After Spears vacated the premises, the changes to the show worked, leading to several exciting performances including an off-camera fight between Pamela Anderson exes Kid Rock and Tommy Lee that led Jamie Foxx to quip: "Stop all this white-on-white violence."

.... Rihanna won the coveted Video of the Year award, plus Monster Single of the Year for "Umbrella." The Best Group was Fallout Boy, and Gym Class Heroes won Best New Artist.
Britney Spears' Disaster: Dead Career Bounce
    by Roger Friedman, FOX news

.... It’s not like the rest of the VMAs was any great moment in music history, either. For years, the show has demonstrated that the one-time Music Television Network is a showcase for unmemorable junk.

You’d think that the people responsible for its original success — many of whom are still around — would want more for their legacies than this annual, witless exercise. One upside to all this: Kanye West swears he won’t return to the show. If only some of his peers would do the same thing, the show might have a chance.
I do not like Sarah Silverman (she was a host on the VMAs). I didn't watch the VMAs, but I've read and seen plenty about it.

Laura Ingraham, the radio host, ripped on Silverman on today's broadcast. Laura played clips of Silverman's dialogue from the VMAs.

Silverman is like Madonna: she thinks it's funny to be vulgar and obscene, but it's just tasteless, lame, and boring.

Britney Spears mocked by VMA host Sarah Silverman
Britney Spears was slammed by MTV Video Music Awards host Sarah Silverman following her big comeback performance last night.

The ‘comedienne’ said: “Wasn't that incredible? Britney Spears, everyone. Wow. She is amazing. She is 25-years-old and she’s already accomplished everything she’s going to accomplish in her life. It’s mind blowing.”

Adding: “Have you seen Britney’s kids? Oh my god, they are the most adorable mistakes you will ever see! "They are as cute as the hairless vagina they came out of.”

You kinda have to forgive Spears for not giving her best performance ever when she knew people were gonna talk crap like that about her after it.
Brittney and the Current State of Pop Music: Bad! Really Bad!
    [snip Britney Spears comments]

.... the whole show is a laughing stock. Technical problems, boring guest speakers (what the hell was up with Alicia Keyes?) and the worst comedian in the history of comedy as host, Sarah Silverman.

Not only can you understand why the music industry sucks so much, but you really feel bad for it.

If this is representative of my generation's music, I don't want anything to do with it. Give me the 60's, 70's or the 80's over any of this crap.
