Life in Treeport Illinois was a quiet one. The people who lived there lived a simple life, working their nine to five jobs. They had barbeques, and block parties where they would all get together and catch up on the latest things going on in the town.
Life seemed perfect to the people in Eastern Treeport, the upper class section of the small town, and they obviously thought they were better then the people in Western Treeport. A small prejudice every town has them, but this wasn’t as small as some people were lead to believe. The kids? Well they were all stuck in the middle and were raised to believe what their parents told them.
Not everyone listened to their parents, but never the less the town stood divided in two sections, the rich and the middle classed. Now the kids who lived in the Western part of Treeport had to work for most of what they had, they got jobs when they were sixteen and had to earn their cars, unlike the kids of Eastern Treeport. The kids of Eastern Treeport where given everything, no matter what the cost. Their parents went out of the way to spoil them rotten.
But as you know life can change in a blink of an eye. Two kids a boy named Jensen Michaels and a girl named Sarah Collins changed everything. They did something that was unheard of, they fell in love. Really not uncommon between a boy in a girl, but with their status it was appalling to everyone. Sarah was from Western Treeport and Jensen was from Eastern. It seemed they met at a party and things went from there.
They had only been dating for a few months, but that was long enough to cause an uproar. And after those two months that’s when the rumors started. Suspicion of pregnancy, drugs and blackmail erupted from every corner. Because there was no way the plain Sarah from Western Treeport snagged the superstar from Eastern without a reason, and love just wasn’t possible in people’s eyes.
The couple endured a lot in their months together the whispers, the laughter and pure disbelief. But they stood strong, or it seemed. Prom season was fast approaching and Jensen and Sarah were set on going together. To whose high school it was unclear, but they were going together some where. That was until a week before prom Jensen broke up with Sarah. It was a public break up and the onlookers laughed as Sarah fled in tears. Really what was she thinking she couldn’t have kept Jensen much longer, plus there were rumors of Jensen and his old girlfriend Molly, it looked like they were getting back together.
And it was true days after the break up Jensen was seen with Molly on his arm. Word got back to Sarah pretty quick, small towns are good for that. The next few days were unbearable for Sarah, those close to her said she seemed to be unstable, and pining for Jensen, but no one thought she would go as far as she did.
PROM 2007, magical and very unforgettable. There was something different this year, that no one counted on. Instead of having two seprate proms like they did every year, the PTA thought it would be nice for the two schools to share one location. So the prom at East High begun with a bang and heated arguements from students from both schools errupted as they walked into the doors of the gym that night. Protesters from West high had a sit-in at their own gym across town, but they were the lucky ones.
After the fighting sudsided, it looked as if things were going to go along great. The gym was now packed with juniors and seniors , from both schools, all dancing to the music. They were talking and laughing, but no one ever thought this would be their last moments alive. Sarah showed up at East High looking for Jensen, they talked, Sarah ending in tears again, as Jensen went back inside, Sarah went behind him and looked the door with chain and a padlock. She went to every door and did this, because Sarah and thought this trough very carefully, she was going to burn the school down. If she couldn’t have Jensen, then he couldn’t live.
Fifteen minutes later the gym was showing signs of smoke but with the doors locked, no one could get out. Flames came eventually, engulfing the place. Sarah stood laughing at the door and ran into the school. A crowd of onlookers and rescuers came soon after. They were the only witnesses of Sarah’s demise, as she jumped off the East high clock tower to her death. Only a handful of students did make it out alive, but none of them were Jensen or his girlfriend Molly.
So no one really knows what went on between Sarah and Jensen, some people speculate about the events. The rumors after the fire came eventually, but no one is certain what happened. Did Jensen really love Sarah or was it a game to him? Or maybe the pressure finally got to him, and he went back to his old girlfriend so his friends wouldn’t give him any more slack, and the sad thing is no one will know the truth. The months after the fire were tough for everyone, summer seemed to have lost it’s sparkle, but life moved on as it always does.
So now it’s the fall of 2007, the fire from Sarah Collins wiped out most of East High. The remaining students are now attending West High not many people are happy about this to say the least, but most are still reeling over what happened only a few short months ago. The question is, will the tragic event that changed the small town, change it’s people for the better? Will they now be looking for the love and comfort of friendship, will they push their differences aside? Looking inside themselves to change for the better would be the ideal thing, but who knows what will become of the townspeople. But more importantly will they be looking for reasons to be missed?
