the updates.
Every so often, you'll find a new post in this forum by an admin. This is recommended reading, if you intend to stay caught up on the forum at all. Without reading, you may become behind on the plot, certain subplots, and even deadlines. Please note that if an admin decides on an impromptu activity check, you'll find it in here as well. However, you won't be alerted by email of the check, so make sure to stay active!

the subplots.
What's a Harry Potter role-play without its subplots? If you check here, you'll find an assortment of twisted character interactions. You never know; maybe your character will be listed in one. This is mandatory reading, as we will not alert you if your character is in a subplot.

the notes.
Aiming to cheat on a test, or do you just want to pester the person that sits in front of you? Oh - I see you've gotten a letter from your mum. No wait - that's a howler. You'd best open that quickly and get it over with, or you'll get another one. Regardless, you should always check your Owl Post, because you never know when you'll have gotten a letter from that special someone or not.

wiltshire.
Wiltshire, a county in south-central Britain west of London, is the starting point of the West Country - and the location of the Malfoy Mansion. Wiltshire includes the Avebury Stone Circle, Salisbury Plain, and Stonehenge, as well as nine white chalk horses carved into hillsides. You'd best not stray here, as Wiltshire retains the homes of many prominent Death Eaters.

godric's hollow.
Godric's Hollow is located in the West Country of southwestern England, putting it in the heart of perhaps the most wizarding-friendly region in Britain. Ottery St. Catchpole is in this area, as are Cornwall, Devon, several Quidditch teams, and a number of known Quidditch stadiums built on the abundant local moors. At the center of the village itself is a square with a post office, a pub, and a church with a graveyard behind it. In the middle of the square is a war memorial which, upon closer inspection by wizards, transforms into a statue of James, Lily, and young Harry Potter - a monument to their final stand. The graveyard, with a kissing gate at the front, is the final resting place of Ignotus Peverell, Kendra and Ariana Dumbledore, and James and Lily Potter, among others.

ottery st. catchpole.
Ottery St. Catchpole is located in Devon, along the Otter River. Other towns along this river include Ottery St. Mary and Otterton. The town is relatively small. The Burrow is located near the village to the south, but is hidden by hills and trees. Most Muggles don't even realize there is a house there. On the other side of the village from the Burrow is a fairly good-sized hill called Stoatshead Hill.

twelve grimmauld place.
Unplottable and hidden away behind a Fidelius Charm, between two shabby London Muggle houses, is number twelve Grimmauld Place. This is the family home of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, one of the most prominent pure-blood wizarding families. The house is derelict, a ruin of its former self. The mistress of the house, Mrs. Black, died around 1985, and since then "stuff's been breeding in here," as Hermione says. Her eldest son, Sirius, became the owner of the place after his mother's death, but since he was in Azkaban, no one but Kreacher the house-elf watched over things. Sirius' father put every security measure known to wizard-kind on the house. The house is located a twenty-minute walk (approximately one mile) from King's Cross Station.

diagon alley.
Tapping just the right brick in the wall behind the Leaky Cauldron pub in London will reveal an archway which is a portal into Diagon Alley, a long cobbled street where is to be found a strange and exciting assortment of shops and restaurants, some of which have tables outside with brightly colored umbrellas. Does Diagon Alley exist in Muggle reality? It would seem so, since Harry heard traffic outside his room in the Leaky Cauldron. Of course, that may be simply the fact that the Leaky Cauldron itself is in Muggle space, but the Alley on the other side of the magic portal is not. Diagon Alley is fairly large. There are a large number of shops of many varieties. Witches and wizards travel to Diagon Alley from all over Britain to spend the day shopping. Near Gringotts is a sidestreet called Knockturn Alley where are to be found shops dealing with the Dark Arts.

azkaban fortress.
The Department of Magical Law Enforcement maintains a prison on a tiny island far out in the icy waters of the North Sea. It's called Azkaban Fortress or simply Azkaban. It is a terrible place, there. The prisoners there are guarded by Dementors, horrible creatures who have been described as sightless soul-sucking fiends. They feed on positive emotions, which means that after spending much time in the prison, the prisoners lose all hope and all good feelings and thoughts. The prisoners are forced to relive the darkest, most horrible memories of their lives. Some go mad, others simply despair and die.

knockturn alley.
Knockturn Alley is a dingy alleyway where the shops are devoted to Dark Arts items. The alley is connected to Diagon Alley near Gringotts. There are stores selling shrunken heads, live gigantic black spiders, and poisonous candles. Street vendors include an old witch with a tray full of whole human fingernails.

the leaky cauldron.
A small, shabby-looking inn on Charing Cross Road, London, sandwiched between a big book shop and a record store, is where you will find the Leaky Cauldron. The Leaky Cauldron is apparently not in Diagon Alley itself; it does serve as a "bridge" between the two worlds, however. The pub was built by Daisy Dodderidge around 1500 "to serve as a gateway between the non-wizarding world and Diagon Alley." There are a number of rooms available. There is a bar, several private parlor rooms, and a good-sized dining room.

king's cross station.
In order to catch the Hogwarts Express to Hogwarts, students must board at Platform Nine and Three Quarters at King's Cross Station. This platform is not visible to Muggles. In fact, you get to it by running toward the solid barrier between platforms nine and ten, full tilt. Instead of hitting the wall, you'll find yourself passing under a wrought iron sign that says "Platform Nine and Three Quarters." A scarlet steam engine waits there, with a string of red passenger carriages behind it, with a sign overhead saying "Hogwarts Express, 11 A.M." A guard sits near the ticket booth, monitoring the comings and goings through the portal, making sure that too many people don't do it at the same time and alarm the Muggles. On days when the train is set to leave for Hogwarts, the platform is filled with witches and wizards saying good bye to their children. Cats and owls are a common sight among the crowd.

bulgaria: durmstrang institute
In a castle in northern Europe is Durmstrang Institute. Though not nearly as large as Hogwarts, with only four floors, the Institute still has quite a number of students to warm. Its fires are only lit for magical purposes. The grounds are quite extensive and include lakes and mountains. Durmstrang has the reputation of teaching Dark Arts. It does not admit Muggle-born students at all.

the quidditch world cup stadium.
Concealed by magic and hidden from muggles in every way possible, you'll find the Stadium on a vast, deserted moor. You must approach the Quidditch World Cup Stadium through some woods, a twenty-minute walk along a lantern-lit trail. Once you reach the stadium, you'll see immense gold walls and a large arena that looks like ten cathedrals would fit comfortably inside it. The Stadium seats 100,000 people, with Muggle-Repelling Charms on every inch of it. There are also about twenty top box seats, with purple and gilt chairs. Two hundred portkeys were set up around Britain to move people to the Stadium itself, cheap tickets first.

france: beauxbatons academy of magic.
The Academy's building is called the Palace of Beauxbatons, and unlike Hogwarts Castle does not contain suits of armour. Rather than a Great Hall as at Hogwarts, the Palace contains a Dining Chamber, which is elaborately decorated at Christmastime but in a different style than that used at Hogwarts. The scholastic system at the Academy is arranged differently than that at Hogwarts; instead of sitting Ordinary Wizarding Levels or their equivalent at the end of five years, Academy students sit exams after six years.

st. mungo's hospital for magical maladies and injuries.
The Healers at St. Mungo's are trained and equipped to treat a wide variety of magic-related illnesses and injuries. The staff wear lime green robes. The St. Mungo's emblem is a wand and a bone, crossed. St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is reached via Purge and Dowse, Ltd. in Muggle London. Purge and Dowse, Ltd. is a red-brick, old-fashioned department store that has "Closed for Refurbishment" signs hanging on its doors. One speaks to the ugly dummy in the front window, who will nod its assent and beckon you to enter. In a process very similar to how one gets onto Platform 9 and 3/4, one walks into the window.
