Character details Name: Jamie Madrox Nicknames: Jamie, Multiple Man. Age: 16. Gender: Male
Physiology Eye Color: Brown Hair color: Dark Brown Height: 5’6” Weight 138lbs Anything else: -. Description: Though he’s already 16, Jamie looks like he’s just hit puberty. He’s relatively tall, but doesn’t have the bulk of an adult yet, and his face still has the softness of childhood, with baby fat softening what could one day be quite rugged features. Jamie also hasn’t really developed the sense of style most adults have. His hair tends to get shaggy from lack of regular haircuts, though at least he keeps it combed and clean. What little beard growth the boy already has also tends to go unshaven for long periods of time, though he doesn’t have enough growth yet for more than the faintest of shadows on his chin. All in all Jamie looks slightly unkempt most of the time, though the rumpled look actually suits him reasonably well.
Clothing wise Jamie tends to wear whatever comes out of the clothes cupboard that’s reasonably clean. Hence his jeans tend to be pretty heavily worn and he dresses without really thinking about what he’s doing. The one thing that always stays the same though is the various shirts covered in what look like random patterns made with disks, usually in bright colors on a black background. The disks form a pattern of miniaturized shock absorbers that help Jamie control his powers, so that he’ll be wearing one of them no matter what, even if it has to be under other clothes. Play-by: Not required as this is a canon only site, however if you want to have a play by, that is fine.
Powers: Jamie is literally a multiple man. Kinetic impacts beyond a certain low threshold cause him to split into two identical duplicates. The clones are perfectly similar, with no distinguishing features, since Jamie’s power also duplicates any clothing he is wearing. Also, each clone can also duplicate again, though this doesn’t increase the number of possible duplicates beyond Jamie’s maximum. He doesn’t have the ability to duplicate more mass than a simple set of clothing, nor can he control what is duplicated. If he was holding a gun before cloning then one clone will keep the gun and the other will appear without it.
So far Jamie has been able to create a maximum of 8 clones in ideal conditions before being overwhelmed by a feeling of disorientation that he compared to a really bad déjà vu. Of these clones one is dominant over the others and is referred to as Jamie Prime by the clone group. It’s unclear if anything bad would happen if Jamie Prime were to be killed, since so far Jamie has been loathe to try anything risky with that copy of himself and thusly his clones tend to be very protective of Jamie Prime.
Jamie Prime is able to absorb other dupes at will, gaining any memories they had while separated, though they sometimes take a little to completely assimilate into his own. Sometimes this need to assimilate a dupe’s memories properly can lead to Jamie ‘forgetting’ details that his dupes remembered. He can also send out a subconscious telepathic ‘rallying call’ to his duplicates within a radius of several hundred miles, though that is the only form of direct telepathic communication he can perform.
Any adverse effect such as poisons, diseases or injuries a Jamie has when he duplicates is divided evenly over the two, allowing Jamie to use duplicates as a form of healing. Unfortunately reabsorbing an injured duplicate is painful for Jamie, which lessens the usefulness of that particular trick. Interestingly enough, if Jamie clones while under telepathic influence the clone is free of the influence, provided the telepath is not strong enough to simply control both.
Jamie has a series of custom made shirts that contain small shock absorbers woven into the fabric that help absorb unexpected impacts and stop him from cloning against his will. Since the absorbers have to be small and light enough to function in normal clothing, they’re not particularly strong and are only really useful to prevent Jamie from cloning when he knock on a door, and not for stopping punches or anything like that.
Weaknesses: Jamie’s main ‘weakness’ is that he’s a well-trained but normal guy aside from the cloning, which often lands him in trouble in a world full of people able to throw tanks and level buildings.
If a clone dies the resulting psychic backlash will temporarily disable all Jamie’s around as they experience a blinding burst of pain. It will take Jamie several minutes to be able to act again, and he’ll need to take time to rest and calm down before being able to act again. He’s also unable to reabsorb dead clones, so he tends to try and take them back before they reach that point.
Jamie’s control over his cloning abilities is extremely limited. If he has time to prepare he can avoid cloning, thanks in part to his special clothing. But if he’s surprised or struck hard enough (and a blow from a fist is plenty hard enough) he will clone whether he wants to or not.
Though he’s certainly a big follower of the X-Men’s ideals in principle, Jamie is essentially a normal kid, and painfully aware of the fact that he’s not super strong or invulnerable. He’s not fearless, and that can lead Jamie to hesitate when other people might have acted.
Though Jamie isn’t really aware of this, his dupes are fully self aware and are more than just extensions of himself. They virtually always do what Jamie Prime wants, particularly if they haven’t been separated for long. But if a dupe where to stay away from the original for an extended period of time he could develop an identity that is completely independent of the original.
Psychology Personality Description: Jamie is an immature loudmouth of a prankster, but also a gregarious and amusing companion. He rarely takes anything seriously, and even when he does he tends to make a wisecrack anyway. His attitude when he’s like this ranges from amusingly goofy to annoyingly immature, the latter usually manifesting when he’s called on a joke gone wrong.
Though he’s a habitual serial joker, Jamie is not totally insensitive. He CAN ditch the funnies when the situation calls for it, and he has his moments of maturity and insight at times. And he has the minimum level of social awareness needed to not seriously offend people or totally gross them out. A lot of the time he isn’t paying enough attention to his surroundings to pick up on the nuances of people’s behavior, but if he does notice someone having problems or in need of a friend, he’ll do his level best to be there for the people he considers his friends.
The driving force behind both Jamie’s constant attention seeking and his more mature, reliable side is his deep-seated fear of being alone. The worst thing you can do to Jamie is ignore him or leave him alone on his own for extended periods of time. If it was up to him he wouldn’t even be alone when he’s asleep, and if there’s nobody else around he will often create a dupe just to have someone to talk to. After a while of being alone, Jamie will start to crack more and more, becoming more and more uncomfortable until he’d make nice with anybody, just to have someone there.
When he was a kid Jamie used to watch a lot of film noire detective movies, and they left a lasting impression. He’ll sometimes talk to himself in the third person, like the characters from those movies, most often when he’s berating himself for doing something dumb. And when he tries to play it tough he tends to adopt mannerisms from those movies, like a constant sneer and a hard, nasal tone of voice.
Unlike some other mutants, Jamie is extremely comfortable with his powers and will use them out of convenience or just for fun. Why miss even a minute of a TV show if you can send a dupe to do onerous chores or even just to fetch a snack? Thus he’s able to indulge his liking of trash TV, comics and detective flicks while staying fit and without neglecting his duties. One way to tell that something is important to Jamie is that Jamie Prime will always do the thing he thinks is most interesting. Of course, that requires figuring out which one the main Jamie is in a crowd of identical dupes.
History: Unlike many other mutants, Jamie’s powers didn’t manifest later in life, but where with him right from birth. He caused his first scandal when the slap on the butt he received from the doctor right after birth turned a healthy young boy into a healthy set of twins. His parents were shocked at having given birth to a mutant, but Jamie was lucky in that they were not as callous as some other parents and still cared for their only son. Even so they would have had a tough time of it had Daniel not been acquainted with Charles Xavier through his research work. Without revealing that he himself was a mutant Charles provided the Madrox family with both the advice and the financial aid they needed to go on with their lives. And when Jamie proved incapable of controlling his powers and cloned after any impact stronger than a soft caress it was Xavier who devised the shock-resistant suit that completely insulated Jamie from the outside world.
In order to avoid the social stigma of their son’s mutation and the strange suit he had to wear, the Madrox family abandoned their life in civilization and moved to a small farm in a remote area of Kansas. There they set up a frugal lifestyle revolving around sustaining themselves from what they could produce on their land. Jamie was kept at home and away from people as much as possible. Apart from occasionally greeting guests from a distance Jamie’s only human contact were his parents and a holographic training computer Xavier had provided that was imprinted with a facsimile of the Professor’s personality. Despite this lack of contact, Jamie was never alone, as his parents cared extremely well for their son. And without anyone else to bond with, Jamie became extremely attached to his parents. He was also completely unaware of his powers, though observations on television had already shown him that he must be different somehow, since no-one else had to wear a high tech bodysuit at all times. But his parents wouldn’t explain that to him, and he didn’t press the issue enough to overcome their resistance.
Tragedy struck when Jamie was 13. A freak tornado tore through the farm, almost completely demolishing the house. Jamie’s suit protected him well enough to survive relatively unscathed, but he lost both his parents that day. The young boy was devastated, but his need to survive was stronger than the despair and he had little time to grieve before he had to get to work repairing the damage and securing the crops and animals he would need. Though he would always associate the farm with his loss, his parent’s edict against contact with other people kept Jamie from leaving. And so he spent the next two years working the land on his own without company. It was a pretty miserable time, and it’s the source of Jamie’s intense dislike of being left alone.
It is quite possible that Jamie could have lasted a lot longer on the farm, had the suit he was wearing not been unable to cope with his growing body. Without maintenance and adjustment by his father, the suit began to malfunction. And since it was keyed into his body’s electric field to power itself, the malfunction caused Jamie almost unbearable pain. His mind snapped under the strain and Jamie lapsed into madness. Driven by the ravening need for human contact and for power to keep the suit functioning without hurting him, Jamie left the farm and headed towards civilization. He ended up in New York, where an army of Jamie clones started causing mass blackouts in their quest for power for the suit.
Multiple Man’s run as a super villain was extremely short-lived, as he quickly came to the attention of the X-Men, who managed to swiftly overwhelm the army of maddened teenagers. New Yorkers took the blackouts in stride and by the standards of the other threats that have attacked the Big Apple over the years, Jamie was a minor factor and swiftly forgotten by the populace in favor of more destructive villains. As far as his first foray into the world of superheroes went, Jamie really wasn't much of a hit.
As a mutant who’d spent a lot of his life tutored by Professor Xavier, actually until well after the real Professor’s death, Jamie was a natural candidate for the Institute, especially given that he already knew about the existence of the X-Men. Besides, he had nowhere else to go. It was a little jarring for him to suddenly have people around him, and to find out that the Professor had actually been dead for years. But the lad adapted extremely quickly, and seems to have accepted being a mutant without any big problems, and to have left most of the trauma of his childhood behind, with the exception of his need for company. Jamie has been at the Institute for a year now, and finished his last school year with grades that were just shy of being catastrophic, mainly due to his disinterest in actually taking class seriously. Since the existence of the X-Men is kept from the students, it was made very clear to Jamie that he was to keep his mouth shut about who the staff of the school really are. So far he's done a good job of it and hasn't let anything slip. But a secret like that wants to be told, and Jamie's been fairly bursting to do so.
RP Sample: “Aw man, math is such a drag.” Jamie grumbled as he slouched over his math book. He’d been sitting at the desk for two hours and hadn’t even finished half of the questions yet.
“Tough cookie man, we drew straws and you lost.” One of the two Jamies sitting on the bed playing Gameboy called out with the kind of merciless slave-driver attitude only kids developed amongst each other.
“And you’d better get ‘em right, or I’m popping you out again to kick your ass.” Jamie Prime chimed in without looking up from the comic book he was reading on the floor. Both of the other Jamies rolled their eyes, the threat was as empty as it was stupid, and if they thought that that meant that Jamie Prime did too. Sometimes he really thought that he was dumb. But it passed the time, so whatever. Talking smack between dupes at least meant that there was conversation in the room, which in Jamie’s world was way more important than getting the math work done.
“Chill, I’ll be back from the library with that textbook soon.” The Math Dupe shot back, sounding appropriately scornful for the mock argument to continue. “And then you better take me back in, I wanna know how that comic ends.”
Interview Why did you choose this particular character? Because I wanted to have a gregarious student character and have played Jamie before. What is the most important rule here on XMS? [admin edit. haha] Anything else you would like to add?
