Welllllll!!!!!!!!!!

I thought that seeing Orks are a lazy breed they'd probably get their 'oomie slaves to convert manufacturing plants to churn out trukks, buggies and bikes.

I fancied doing a new Ork army (cos you can never have enough Orks) but I wanted to go FAST!!!!

This meant the Speed Freaks list but I really didn't want to do the trukks and Bikes combo that everyone else seems to take. Ummm so what to do?

Buggies!!!!! = FUN

Lots of Buggies!!!!! = MORE FUN

Money! **** that would cost lots of money! = BAD

Drawing board + head scratching + trip to molding supply shop = Answer!

Make my own little Ork vehicle factory!

So how to make it easy to make but capable to easily give me some variation in the figures

If we go back to the concept that the orks have captured something like a little tractor factory, we can justify the sameness of the models at the same time as allowing the little differences to be Orky!

Track! I decided to make them all tracked, partly to test how the molding would take to tracked details.

Bish Bosh!
Orky track masters & the main chassis with undercarriage!

Glug glug with the silicon rubber! Bob's ya mothers brother!

Two molds ready to pour. I tried dental plaster in the track mold first and it just wasn't going to take - the track plats were two small and brittle. PLAN B!
Resin - another trip to the molding shop found me walking away with a 2KG tub of 2-part resin. Splosh splosh mix mix

Voila!
Curing & then demolding!

This is how the tracks came out. I actually did three different types of tracks to give a bit of variation.
user posted image

I also did some glyph plates for the fronts of the buggies as unit markers

user posted image

So then all I needed to do was crank them out of the molds! As the resin is quick curing this took less time than you'd imagine. I could do a resin mold pour and then demold after only twenty minutes!

user posted image

This meant that I only had to slap them together. I used bits-box bits for the weapons and some bit of plasticard and polystyrene to make some of them really different. Hot glue gun and BOSH!

Wow nice work there and thanks for the info about different casting materials. I hear lots of people swear by different materials & methods but its great to actually hear some one trying out them all!

I really like the idea of assembly line ork vehicles, ever how much single production, scratch built Ork vehicles are cool, it doesn't really fit my idea of an "army" of vehicles.

A can't wait to see more patterns using these parts and what they look like painted.

**Doh!** I started writing before you had the second post up.

Bravo!

Nah - just trukks using the track sections and foamcore, plastic bits etc...

Thanks for the comments guys!

It is a real learning experience doing the casting - a real joy when it works out..

That casting is awesome, the assembly line theme is great too.

I don't like the stark white on the vehicles though. It needs to be hit with an ink wash or something.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Deveran - The resin I use is pretty tought stuff - large blocks are really strong but even small details with withstand a reasonable amount of punishment. I get my supplies from Alec Tiranti UK

Great Shop in the south of England

I use their T20 Silicon RTV Rubber for my molds
Biresin G26 resin for detailed or fragile bits
and 'Modell' Plaster for bulky items as its cheap relatively strong and it picks up the detail really well

Axiom - Ork gunners - Yeap you're right but I wanted to keep the project as simple and time efficient as possible as I need them shortly for a campaign weekend at Warhammer World - want to make sure that they were done. Probably would have had the time but hey! live n learn! biggrin.gif

To answer your other question - the 1500 pt force has 12 buggies, 3 guntrukks, a basilisk and three trukks loaded with choppy boyz!

The full 2250 (for the Endgame campaign weekend) will have 21 buggies, 6 guntrukks, a basilisk and four trukks loaded with boyz. And de'll all be going ded FAST! biggrin.gif

Si - Painting was kept to a simple black under coat followed by dry brushed tin bitz then chainmail. after that I used Scab Red to paint them rough and ork like. Then I used Blood Red to brighten the colour. Another quick light drybrush of silver to pick out rivets and then black and white to pick out details - job done!

I'm probably going give them all a really light brown wash to dirty them and a quick sandy drybrush to wheather them slightly.

PS hows the Stompa coming along?

Niroe - OH YES! Red wuns go very fast! They did last night! My buggies and boyz charged into witchhunters with grey knights and broke through to blow up the objective! (Sabotage Mission).

I have discovered that making numerous armour plate 6+ saves on vehicles is a great to wind up your opponents!! laugh.gif The dice were with me last night!

As for the tutorial - I think it best that I direct you to the place that I started from - mainly because I don't think I could do better!

Great website - loads of stuff to coo over!

Hirst Arts

Feel free to PM if you are trying molding and need any advice.

I would seriously recommend giving it a go - great fun!

Brilliant idea and great execution. I love the look of the completed fleet. I have been wanting to try to do some casting of some one off parts for my Scion of Mars army I have been wanting to build. This may just be the inspiration I need to start on that endeavor. cool.gif

QUOTE (merric101 @ Jul 26 2006, 06:29 PM)
so can you explain alittle, plz............................... sad.gif

Oh ....alright then biggrin.gif

I use a large plain white tile, to which I attach the originals for what I'm going to mold (using PVA or plastascine). Obviously these are flat molds so the originals have to be flat on the bottom.

I then make a mold box (this bit is for Smoking Monkee) using lego. Lego is cool for this as you can reuse it and it is easy to get it to the right size and shape in order to fully cover what you are molding at the same time as being able to reduce wastage in silicon. Once the box is built i cover the inside with masking tape to make it really water tight then I fix this onto the tile around the originals with some plastascine to make that seal water tight as well.

Now when it comes to the silicon - it tends to come as a big tin (like household paint) with a little tin of catalyst. Now these have to be mixed in the right proportions. Measuring the stuff out by weight is a pain so I tend to prepar enough molds to be poured so that I will use a whole tin of Silicon in one go. This means that you can just pour the catalyst (only a small volume) straight into the silicon can. You have to stir the mix in properly so that the two liquids are fully integrated. If you don't do this the mold will not set properly!

When you're happy that the mixture is ready you have to pour a little bit into the mold and then using an large old stiff brush you have to work the solution around the mold making sure you have pushed silicon into all the nooks and crannies to make sure the mold picks up all the details on the originals. This is very important! If you don't your molds will turn out bad!

Once you've worked the silicon around the originals you can pour in the rest of the silicon. "Tapping out" is also important, you have to bang the mold box not really hard but enough to dislodge as much air that is trapped in the silicon as possible.
The mold must be left to set (the stuff I use takes about 24 hours to set completely) and it must be left somewhere level or your mold will turn out wonky!

After 24 hours you can begin the gentle process of removing the mold box and originals. You might have to break your originals to get them out of the mold depending on what you used to make them. For the buggies I only used foamcore with plasticard stuck to it - the originals don't have to be particulary tough!

Once you have released the mold you'll probably need to trim it gently with scissors to neaten the openings but after that you can start casting!

WARNING - plaster is easy to use but not good for small or potentially weak details. So you might have to think about resin which is more expensive but tougher than plaster. If you end up using Resin - BE CAREFUL - it is poisonous so read all the details that come with it and make proper preparations against spills and accidents.

Also be quick! Resin sets FAST!

Smoking Monkee - I haven't tried two part molds yet - just been cutting my teeth on flat molds this year but I have plans.........BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAA! biggrin.gif

Thats for the feedback guys

FoT

Cool looking buggies.

I'm temted to do somnething similar for the bodies and parts for an armoured company. Then i could add random bts to make Ork vehicles. (I've gone into a bit of an "orky phase")

WAAAAARGH!!!!

Nah Not really - I blitzed them! Had them mostly finished within a week!

Thankfully the detail is picked up by the drybushing so you don't have to spend long on each buggy!

Easy! biggrin.gif
