The obvious ones are always the xacto knife, the glue (plastic and Super), the pin vice.

But what about the other ones like the scribing tool I use for etching and Scoring plasticard.

Just pull it along your line give it a couple of drags and you can normally snap it off with a gentle bend. (plus you don't have to pull hard)

Or the Allmighty Train track saw this thing is awesome and cheap (4-5$).

These are what I do all of my cutting with.

this is obviously just the tip of the iceberg, but hey we got to start somewhere, right?

The drill bits are made by a company called Excel. They make blades and such for exacto knives and are usually available at most hobby stores. happy.gif

Well Shi'ur I will have to search because the hobby shops around me dont have anything other than the small plastic tube with a couple in it from exacto and I bought those.

And Grizzly,
micro mark is good I have ordered from them and there pretty fast and you get what you ordered and payed for so I have had good service with them.

Ok thanks guys and I will check MSC. wink.gif

How about a solder iron and hot wire?

Hot wire is usful for cutting large chunks for polystyrene.
And the solder iron, well it melts thing, I'm sure you could find a use for it! tongue.gif

It's easy to bend and shape, so it can be used as electrical wires.

The Foam cutting tool:
user posted image

This tool which I got from GW uses 2 'D' batteries to create current across the thin wire heating it up which them melts through the foam like butter. Caution it does get hot so do not touch the wire itself. It goes for around 15$ canadian for 50$ you can get the good one that plugs in the wall and had a different wire bow option, it also goes cold as soon as you turn it off.

and then there is the "Quick Grip" clamps I have shown the 2 that I own oine with the stationary head flip to the other end allowing you to spread things apart. They go for about 13$ can each.

This is a comprehensive list that I can't really add to, I use pretty simple tools because I don't use thick or tough materials like MDF that can't be cut with Xacto knives or Hot Wire Cutters.

It's been helpful for thinking of tools I'll need to buy; the Jeweller's Saw, Mitre Box and Needle Files are definitely on the list.

I'm especially interested in your Pin Vise... The GW one is rather expensive and doesn't come with smaller bits like the one you have does. Where did you get it? What kind of stores carry it? I haven't seen any real hobby shops over here so I'm at a loss of where to start looking.

Edit: after a quick online search I found the one you have, and at a pretty fair price. http://www.greenwayproducts.com/buy_tool_drills.htm

Hope I can find it in local shops or a UK dealer so shipping's not ridiculously expensive.

I'm in the uk and I bought my drill set at a local hardware store its got bits from absolutly tiny up to something thin. I normally just twirl them but if I'm doing a sreious job I have a modified craft knife holder. ITs just a cheapo thing from a 'Pound Shop' but the blade holder was a cross patern rather than the usual slot. I basically hold the drill in the middle of the cross and tighten the holder up as tight as possible. Hey its cheap but it works for me.

Sometimes you can get cheap knifes with a plastic holder with a slot in it. Modify the plastic to get the cross shape - it has to be cross shapeded or the drill bit just works out of centre position.

I have a craft knife, a needle file, a metal ruler and stanley knife (box-cutter for you American types wink.gif) for cutting big stuff, and I've just this very day bought a pin vice and a set of bits, 2mm down to 0.5mm. I also have a very handy Leatherman multitool which has pliers, wire cutters and another file (coarse diamond pattern and very fine on the other side) which is great for metal models. I'm now experimenting with the pin vice by trying to pin one of my Kill Team member's arm together. Wish me luck....

EDIT: Argh. Also trying out greenstuffing, and it's bloody hard....

Some people know of this, but some don't so:

I use this Poly Cement- made by Revell as it's cheaper than GW's and has an excellent metal needle nose which means you can accurately apply it with more ease:

Oooooooooooooo... I love that stuff. happy.gif

Trouble is, I can't find it anymore, and I don't live in Australia either. I did however, find this stuff, which is quite similar. It's the same consistancy, and has that lovely needle-like applicator for precision gluing. wink.gif

As you can see from the picture below, my Contacta has seen better days. I actually lost the metal tip for it some time ago. Still have no idea as to what ever became of it. blink.gif

user posted image

Here's another type of super glue that I love to use. It's made by Loctite, and is actually a gel. It's really good for bonding the metals, you just have to make sure that the pieces are lined up properly before you glue them. Once this stuff is glued... it's glued. blink.gif

I just wish that it came in a larger bottle, as I go through it so fast. My lovely Kroot assistant "Vanna" is showing scale, it's actually alot smaller than it looks laugh.gif
