So after a long while, the details for this commission have been fleshed out. As such ive started work. The client is wanting a thread started on these guys all around town to get as much feedback as possible on the design of them and for any changes that need to be made. So, any and all comments, good or bad are welcome and much appreciated.
Enough blabbering..
The client first contacted me back in late august last year. During that time we have been slowly discussing and coming up with a good theme for his renegade guard army that he has commissioned me to build, convert and paint.
He has some key things he wants in the armies theme.
1) Alot of technology in the army. Crude tech but tech still.
2) Pale skin.
3) Some kind of fancy rengade helmet. GS, kit bash, whatever. I went the kit bash route as its easiest and as such cheapest money wise for the client.
4) Fluff wise is they come from a world thats sole use to the imperium is mining minerals. The surface is similiar to mars (present day). The caves themselves that have been dug quickly grow a fungus. The fungus itself is what feeds the miners of the planet.
5) Heavy on the conversions in the army for everything except tanks. He will have minmal tanks when its done as they are a "miners gone bad group" as he puts it.
Thats about it. From that I came up with these things:
Bases: Rocky like mars but not as red. Some grass to spice it up along with the random piece of metal scrap.
Approved color scheme: Its got the olive green ala the fungus in the caves and its got an off light pale red as the armor color to match the surface.
The first set is to dark and the single is to bright. Go figure..
continued..
Heavy Weapons Teams: In keeping with the tech theme the weapon teams are actually a robot gun with a "driver". Basically its based off the new mobile m60 gun platforms the US military is starting to use. Obviously alot bigger since its the imperium but basically the same thing. The guy driving it is free to shot at whatever as the gun fires itself.
The gunner will be be removable for casuality reasons.
Sentinal: Robot walker basically from the mines. Now its fitted for cobat with a nice lascannon. I cant take credit for the design. I cant remember exactly where I saw it but someone made something just like it as a blood pack stalk tank. Idea snagged. Although his is better.

Whoa! Great looking miniatures, your client must be happy with this kind of beginning.
So are all the troops just renegade guards or will there be work force as well? Or were they all slaughtered? Work force could give you endless opportunities to convert, from slave ogryns to nice mutations and zombielike ghoulish hordes of wretches who haven't seen the light of days for ages and thus giving them sickly pale skin.
The heavy weapon team aka robot + driver is a nice one. Cool concept, maybe add bit more low tech gadgets (eg. small cogs and wiring) to it to give more "out of the mine" look?
Sentinel is perfect in my mind. Just maybe bit more of wear and tear to it, once again, for the "from the mines" looks.

What did you use for the extra Sentinal Leg Armor? A bit, if so which one, or is it self made? I have been looking for an easy way to add some more beef/armor to my favoret GW legs for some time and those look like they would work nicely.

Lucius von Kalteisen - The work force will be conscripts. The client is waiting to see how they play out in the new dex and if they will be a viable choice for cannon fodder. Basically LaTD typed mutants is what they will be. The more human like ones are trained to be the "bosses/guards".
Great idea for the weapon platforms. I need to figre out a way to get cheap and easy cogs. Hmm
The sentinal will be just as you pictured it. Wore down
lone dirty dog - Yes thats where I saw the similiar sentinal.
P3nDr4g0n - The top part of the helmets are chaos warriors. The lower human part are from any set really with a head. Zombie, empire, guard, anything really. The ear muff things are thick plastic rod cut to shape and the rivets are small rod cut to shape. Each head takes 15 minutes of work before gluing onto the body
Space Wolf Lord - The thighs are plastic card with FW traitor guard brass plate on them for extra detail. Rivets on there are cut off from extra baneblade armor plates because the client wanted rounded rivets on it instead of the flat ones like the helmets of the guard.
Small update on this commission with no pun intended. The client and I discussed making helmets or face masks for the ratlings like the rest of the army but the client decided against it for one simple fact. Fluff wise, the ratlings are actual ratlings. The skin tone should be normal. As such the army uses them to scout ahead into imperial controlled areas since, well, they can blend in.

Yay, I finally figured out I can find the old threads easliy. My bad everyone for being a bit slow..
Update to this army. The client has since been deployed to iraq yet again so the army is canceled for now. So instead ive taken it under my wing.
And finally some nice conversions. The army itself is lead by tech priests. So, here is the army commander and 4 of his "custom" servitors. Ive always liked the idea of tech priests making thier own servitors in a style they like. My guy likes animals. In this case, a Fly, a Fish, a Boar and a servo skull with body haha.

Alrighty, pretty much finished the counts as priest in the army.
Fluff wise the its basically a super CC servitor with a bit better free thought. The lower half was an experiment by the tech priests to make something that could cover rough terrain quickly in the confines of the forgeworld they call home, but, it failed and he has normal speed but does like to run in the new edition.
The actual army commander, the tech priest is almost done being painted as well... its been a rough night so i needed to just paint.

Ok, so after actually reading the codex... I cant field tech priests as my hq as they dont take up any slots.. So.. a rogue trader is going to lead the force. Slight fluff change.
As such, this tech priest is just that.. so no fancy paint job. He still needs touch ups and chipped paint but other then the basing hes done.

Only the sergeant has a gun.
If you give some of them lasrifles, IG kit such as the canteen and waistpockets.
I like the use of them, put they do need some more 40k stuff to make them tie in with the army.
Since the are penal legion, i dont want to give them las rifles. 3 have canteans and such, 2 other have las pistols like the sgt, and 2 have heavy bionics.

Why do they need lasguns? They're zombies! They have projectile vomiting as a weapon! Granted its a little much to expect vomit to be rending, but their zombies! On Hallowe'en! Zombies!
