Work In Progress > IMPERIAL GUARD > German 251 Half Track

Posted by: Lt. Walke Apr 13 2006, 09:11 PM
Share with you the members of WIP. It is a Work In Progress and will be taking time to finish. I hope to update as often as I can.

Taking the Chimera chassis he is making it as close to the real thing as he can and yet using GW parts. I hope to have some pics with it beside Brave Rifles Lascannons for all to look at tomorrow here is the current incarnation. I will have more pics after our painting night tonight.

The front end is being test fitted and should be built tonight hopefully.

My Buddy got some more work done tonight. He got the hood design pretty much done and even had time to show me his track design. Tracks are designed this way in an effort to use as much from the chimera kit as possible. He is has created a internal part to the Hull Lasguns and has the benches already inside. Other than under the turret the entire half track is going to be open topped.

Here is a pic of the 251 with the Pak43's from Brave Rifles. All I can say is they are even better looking in person. Thanks Brave Rifles from all of us at the friday night paint mettings we have had a good number of discussions on these pieces and the quality of the work. The only modifications that will have to be made to the cannons is to create an elevation to the cannon while in the travel position.

Oh I meant to ask my bud is wondering if you sent the folding spade as well or not?

this is shaping up to be a SWEET conversion! are you going to attach a hitch to haul the lascannon? that would be awesome, like the squad riding in the halftrack has their lascannon being hauled behind them!

Posted by: Ultramar Apr 14 2006, 12:02 PM
Oh, I simply love this conversion! The balance between warhammer and WWII german look is very well done, I like it a lot.

Lt. is back!!!!!!

Posted by: Lt. Walke Apr 14 2006, 06:17 PM
LoL I wish that this was made by me. A good friend is making it and I promised Brave Rifles to share it with everyone. I haven't gone anywhere don't you worry and once my obligations for painting Terminators is done I will be getting back into tanks again. Don't you worry.

Lt.

Hopefully I will have a completed Terminator unit to post next week sometime.

Most impressive wub.gif

I'm loving the front engine compartment, and the way he separated the troop compartment to extend it.

Can't wait to see it with fenders.

Is he going to round the front edge of the track section?

Posted by: Lt. Walke Apr 14 2006, 09:36 PM
I believe so Mechanicore, yes. I have commendeered him to help us with building some Genesteelers though. should be an update next weekend as that is when I see him. Friday nights.

very Nice!

Really good interpretation of a very iconic design.

Seriously looking forward to seeing this finished!

Posted by: 8rad Apr 17 2006, 01:38 AM
Hi all. I would like to thank Lt.Walke for posting my work up here for me and doing his best to show what will hopefully be a cool vehichle. This all would not have been possible without his help(i keep forgetting my camera to take pictures). Second, I want to thank Brave Rifles for the excellent lascannons. They will surely add to the look that I'm looking for. The answer to your question HailTheRuss is yes there will be a hitch for the lascannon but it is my intention to initially model it with the back door down to expose the detailed interior. I will however make the back door closeable so that I can attach the lascannon at a later date. The track design has posed the largest struggle for me, I think at this point the front of the track will be symmetrical with the back. I believe this is necessary to maintain the design elements of the chimera.

I hope to have more pics this weekend

And thanks alot for all your comments.

Cheers

amazing job and great use of the chimera chasis.

Posted by: 8rad May 7 2006, 09:27 PM
O.k. Guys, here are the new pictures of my hanomag. I have finished the front hull, added fenders, front suspension(not complete) and the back door. I have also added the drivers hatch from the chimera kit.

But still much left to do.

Hope you like it.

wow good job on that , just one thing to bring up the gap between the front wheels and the track "dose not look right" it looks to open, ok I just went over your last post and you did say that was not done yet so disregard my post.

Posted by: Mechanicore May 8 2006, 02:05 AM
Excelent, you are definatly setting the standard for half and half, hanomag conversions.

Posted by: 8rad May 8 2006, 02:28 AM
Just to reply to you Jaeger. The gap will be filled with a muffler just as on the actual 251. The dimensions should be pretty close to the actual vehicle because when I lay it on a profile drawing of the vehicle lines up very well. Hopefully with the muffler in it will look more natural.

Thanks for your oppinions, keep em coming. Good or bad.

How is the Gunner Idea coming along 8rad? I know we were discussing this at an earlier date but I was wondering on your success?

I really like how the hull is turning out. It truly captures the shape and design of the 251. I am still partial to the open track layout, but that being said the finished design of your concept has a certain 'je ne ces't quois' about it. I am thinking that you may wat to use the Chimera roof hatches as your engine bay 'bonnet' or hood if you will.

The front fenders the tappered edge needs to be either leveled out to a 90* or inward towards the tire. Maybe even shortened a bit; maybe? Maybe trim the side lip off as well as most fenders only covered about 2/3rds of the top of the tire the exception being automotive fenders pressed into design due to accessability of parts.

The rear hatch looks off a bit as well it is the fact that the plate covers the tracks and also happens to be where the rear hatch is mounted. Maybe beef it up so that the hinge looks to be bracket to the central frame?

I am also wondering if the 251 ever carried a pintle mounted MG for AA use in the rear crew compartment?

I know looking at this it looks like I am being over critical, but in knowing 8rad in person I have 1 seen what he is capable of and 2 I have a good idea of the outcome he is striving for and thus mean all of the above in nothing more than (hopefully) helpful information.

Looking forward to our ususal discussions on Friday coming mate.

I have to say it looks great.
I love how well you work with plasticard its almost seemless.
And the bottom closed in tight is nice.

It just looks great.
Well done.

Posted by: IGBunker May 8 2006, 10:09 AM
ya when you do work with plasticard how do you make it seem less?

Posted by: Lt. Walke May 8 2006, 11:10 AM
If i remember correctly 8rad uses Tamiya puddy mised with testors liquid glue and then just sands it down after. I may be wrong though.

Lt.

Posted by: History Lover May 8 2006, 11:14 AM
Thats totally awsome! The good ole 251! I bet the Germans didnt realize their design would be used this far ahead! LOL Great project! Jon

Posted by: ArchMagosDave May 8 2006, 12:39 PM
How do you get the plasticard seams so, well... seamless?! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Panzergraf May 8 2006, 04:36 PM
Wow, 10/10

Posted by: Ultramar May 8 2006, 06:56 PM
WOW, it's getting better and better

Posted by: 8rad May 9 2006, 12:25 AM
Lt. was mostly right about the seams. It is squadron white or green putty(can be mixed with testors glue for a goopier texture) spread on with a hobby knife or your finger and then sanded after it has dried.

Most definately 8rad. I also love the exquisite details in the track system that is now brought to light.

So did they have a pintle mounted MG in the crew compartment?

Lt.

Posted by: 8rad May 10 2006, 09:21 PM
Yes, some did. It was used primarily for anti aircraft defence. But....I suppose it would also be great for covering the troops climbing out the back. Hmmmmmm, that would be a great idea. A heavy bolter would be too bulky. Any suggestions?

8rad

Posted by: Lt. Walke May 11 2006, 03:54 AM
The Heavy Stubber that is on the accessory sprue that I gave you. I know it is closer to the allied .30 cal but it would work. At least I think so.

Yes no?

Lt. Walke

Posted by: CaputMortuum May 11 2006, 03:34 PM
Yeah, heavy stubber looks a bit like MG38 and it was more common on vehicle mounts than MG42 anyway. I think it might look very good.

Uh oh, ahem. imsorry.gif

I of course meant MG34, not MG38.
I don't know where that came from, just read this post again and noticed the error. Anyway, just wanted to say I'm not that daft.

Way too busy but I am starting to get back to 40k. I have been putting in a ton of time at work and haven't had any free time. I am hoping to get back to my army this week.

Alright, life happened, took a bit of a break. Lt. has challenged me to have a 500 pointer by September so I will hopefully be able to getter done. Since my last post I've started the turret, built the hull mounted heavy bolter, lasguns and the rear hatch hinge. I've also added armor plates where the storage boxes were on the 251. I thought armor more practical than storage bins but maintains the "look".
Also added engine compartment hatch and gas cap.

Enjoy.

that keeps looking better and better!

are you putting more detail on the front? at the moment it looks very plain

Posted by: 8rad Jun 18 2006, 05:16 PM
Most certainly, more details on the front are coming. Muffler in the gap between the fenders, headlights, handles on the engine hatch etc. Probably some other touches too. But that will all be after I finish the interior. Also, I am going to add rivets on the entire vehicle. Make it look more 40k-ish.

Cheers

Really great work. I'll be keeping an eye on it's progress. Good Luck!

Added muffler, relocated and lowered turret, added heavy bolter viewfinder.
More to come.

It just keeps getting better and better. The turret looks much better now 8rad. Are you sure that you wanted the Storm Bolter pintle mounted and not the Heavy Stubber? (the Heavy Stubber is the onw that looks like a .30 calibre MG. What do you plant to make the main gun of the turret?

Remind me I have some handles as well as some doors from the chimera that I can spare for those hatches if you would like?

Lt. Walke

Posted by: Lt. Walke Jun 28 2006, 04:17 AM
Hey 8rad how is coming along wink.gif . I have those hatches like I said above (I think) and would gladly part with them. I would suggest that you place an angled plate in that opening like the 3 behind it. They are based upon the british matildas and are there to allow the dirt, dust and mud to fall off instead of conjesting the tracks. so when you paint it I would have some dust trails coming out at the least. That is me of course.

I really doubt it and if he does I think that I am going ot go for first dibbs as I really like the pieces and have been trying to be quite the scrounger in finding parts. Heck I found him a whole tank. But that is a story for another day.

looks awesome btw

Greenstuff

Mich hit it on the head. As 8rad is making Steel Legion infantry he wanted the tank crews to match and one of our regular paint nighters thought up the idea of necron heads. they will be recieveing the canisters or hoses.

In regards to the Heavy Bolter PM 8rad about it (it is his tank) and see what he can do for you. I know that he mounted a modified steel legion HB to the back and has acquired an old metal Cadian heavy bolter gunner to modify into the gunners position.

Lt.

Posted by: 8rad Jul 10 2006, 06:05 PM
I thought the necron heads would make pretty cool masks. I may change them out later if too many peolpe say "why do your tankers have necron heads?"

Thanks for all the feedback.

8rad

Posted by: Lt. Walke Jul 10 2006, 10:39 PM
I wouldn't I think that they look spot on 8rad. once the canisters are in place they will look just fine.

Posted by: mich Jul 10 2006, 11:12 PM
8rad do you have templates of any kind for the front?

Posted by: 8rad Jul 11 2006, 05:28 PM
No I don't. I eyed it all. Sorry. If and when I start the next one I'll keep the templates and throw them up here for all to use.

Posted by: Lt. Walke Aug 9 2006, 02:20 AM
With some work you can take a necron head and create a home made Steel Legion style gasmask. Check out the pics either in his last post through the links or go to the second page and have a look at the JagdPanther tank destroyer that I made for him. The finished product is there.

Good to see you DC.

Lt.

Posted by: 8rad Aug 11 2006, 01:25 PM
The gunners head will be reworked at some point to make him look less like a necron. I think I might use death corps of krieg tank commender in his place. But I'm not sure.

8rad

Posted by: Lt. Walke Aug 13 2006, 04:50 PM
It is your call 8rad. But I like that look f the necron helmut. It may need an adjustment to make people guess but it was a great place to start. I think that the mouth is what throws it off. Maybe alter it?

Lt.

Posted by: Redshirt Aug 13 2006, 08:51 PM
Im with Walke on the necron head. Perhaps a hose for the mouth area to make it more "gasmasky". Dont get me wrong, I love the use of the 'ron head.
