I've said it before but i'm not ashamed to say it again. I love these complex builds because i learn so very much from it. How certain things are made, how the creator think when they do it and when its done, how it'll look and also how the audience react to it.
It spurs my own thinking process into going in other directions than normal and that's actually excellent as it's easy to get stuck in just one way and then repeat it into boredom. The fact that you take the time to post so many pictures and describing what you do is simply awesome for people like me. Big kudos!

Thank guys :) So the airbrush is the winner then.
@Gabaff - I am glad when my posting and rambling is put to some use. If it can inspire some or even teach the one or other trick, then I am finally able to pay back all the things I've learned here on WIP.
Well, I did work hard today :) First I completed the airbrushed cloud pattern all around (You can porbably see a blotch of bluegrey paint on the right edge of the upper rear deck - airbrush accident, that I will have to cover with battle damage and scorched paint....) As you've seen I didn't airbrush the shrine door. Here's the reason why: "Nullus Mundus Ultra Meum Ius Est; Nullus Adversarius Ultra Meam Iram Est" "No world is beyond my authority; no enemy is beyond my wraith" :) Due to the uneven word distribution (mainly the word "Adversarius") I had to use different font sizes, but I think it looks OK.
Oh, and lest we forget Bis, the Gargoyle His facial expression comes along nicely too :) I hope you like this little update. As usual C&C is welcome and apreciated. Cheers Klaus

Hey guys, another update
As said yesterday I had to cover up a blotch of paint. For this I chipped some pieces out of the plasticard and then applied some black paint with the airbrush. This was then covered with a plate of plasticard and some rivets, looking like a quick fix. The plate will be painted in plain Astronomican Grey
Then I spend quite some time painting the first details. By now I dread those good looking port holes - it is quite some work to paint the brass rims cleanly
I also added another sign: HQ MCMXIX - 1919 Atmospheric Strike Fleet" As you can see there's some room on the right side. Maybe you have a good idea for a (short) nickname or a logo? Please let me know.

This project makes me think of an anime(the name eludes me now) but they would pull up side by side and men would fire from ship to ship with rifles as well as planes taking off.
You're thinking of Last Exile, which does indeed bear some similarities to Athena.

OMG Klaus, you've been busy the last couple of days. I just love the airbrush job. It looks as if it’s beneath the surface of the sea. And, damn, the effect of the battle damage looks really natural.
I can hardly wait to see the end result, but on the other hand I will miss the updates when you finish it.
By the way, that gargoyle shows you have more skills than meets the eye I hope your wife doesn’t know you are posting on this forum! Really special present you are making there.

you know Klaus, it would seem that you have already made a perfectly good name for this monster...and her air group. Perhaps you should just put "Athena" on the plaque?

Looking good. And the "happy accident" battle damage works well too. You said you didn't like using an air brush because of all the taping and paint chipping. Have you tried using a semi tack putty? or Silly Putty? to cover the areas? You can get a real good cloud camo effect like you want to do by spraying everything one color, then laying down random looking section strips of silly putty and spraying another color, then simply lift off the putty and lay down again for another color if you want.

Hey guys
@Savayan - Gotthammer had a similar suggestion in my blog: http://www.tact.hawaii.edu/webquest/Englis...ages/athena.jpg This is a brilliant idea, and I will use it on the ATHENA itself - definately. ..but I read it too late yesterday, so I started with something else.
So I added quite some details last night to the command island. Such as the section numbers on the doors, or the hazard stripes beneath the doors, or, or, or I also added some more battle damage to cover up some paint spots *blush* and then I continued with the sign. I decided to nickname the Fleet (not the ATHENA) the "Griffin" and added a small logo to the sign To put it all a bit more into perspective, here is a posing shot with Admiral Azoth In front of the fleet sign and in front of the shrine doors

That first step is a DOOZZY!!! What out for the Hatch Comming!!! LOL!!! Sorry, that hatch comming is a little high for a regular guard trooper... In all honesty, I didn't think it was that big....Not sure why, seems like everything you do is big!!
Can you lower the door a wee bit? Or perhaps put some steps up to it?
I wish I had the time and patience to do something this huge....That and a house that I could hold it all in....Ummm...and a wife that wouldn't shoot me if I were to spend so much time building it.
As for the Griffon....Great name for the fleet...Could you imagine two or three of these in a game? hehehe....

Hello chip6793 - I'm not sure which door you find too big, but I assume you mean the big golden one? Well, please remember this is not a door to walk through, but a door to cover the large stained glass window during combat operations... Cheers Klaus

Sorry for the double-post...
Well, I wasn't lazy over the weekend, and started weathering, using the airbrush and Badab Black as well as Gryphone Sepia for the rust stains After that I started to use Devlan Mud to pick out more details BTW, you may now officially call me insane, as I rusted each rivet individually with a small brush using Devlan Mud But you can see the difference here in this image, where the bottom ones are done, while the top ones are still without Then I completed the shrine for the ATHENA's machine god
And finally I started on another slogan image for the large plate underneath the shrine It will depict a priest with a powerfist in red and black robes and the slogan "Vade Retro Xenos!" - "Begone Xenos!" Cheers Klaus

Excellent work mate, I love the shrine and I can't believe you're painting the rivets by hand. It's nice to get a glimpse of how the projects going to end up looking.
