Title: Imperial Slums Project: Small Dwellings
Description: Update: Aug 6- Scrap Yard Incinerator
Typhoid_Garry - June 23, 2007 11:04 PM (GMT)
Went out and picked up the Fantasy Village set yesterday. Went to work on converting it up this morning. Here's the first project:

Taking into account that this is a piece of Slum terrain, I think of this building as accomadating one or two small families. There's still work to be done, I'd like to add a few 40k touches to the other sides, as well as a "basement entrance" around back. I also have to clean up the joins with some GS, and fill in the arc left when I removed the original raised doorway. I'd also like to add some trim underneath the edges of the roof walls.
For comparison, in the background is the original
Royal sector Wall that really got the Imperial Slums Project started way back when. It's taken quite a bit of damage since I last worked on it, that center post where the lascannons mount has all but fallen off and I'm considering building a new one from the new Village pieces.
Any comments, criticism, or questions are more than welcome.

I thought all the imperium was a slums?? lol kidding, well not kididng but you know waht I mean hehe.
I like it, you should put clothes lines on it etc, maybe some "Praise the emporer" along it cause they are preyin for forunt, etc.

Second home:

Needs a lot more work than the first one does. Fill all the gaps with Apoxie Sculpt, add an overhang or two, plasticard doors, replace small windows with armored shutters, GS/plasticard a small area of battle damage to show layer of metal plating in the wall, replace center robed statue above air vent with CoD piece, remove/replace fantasy symbols with something more fitting, build antenna array on roof where there's currently still a window opening (not seen in picture), and possibly replace roof with metal slates.
Current building size comparison:

 nice job on the conversion with the second house. doorway looks great and it alowas for that platform on top very interesting reminds me of something i built a while back from scratch materials i found lying around

I have to say that this is by far one of the most interesting terrain projects that i've seen in a long while. I loved the walls but the gothic/fantasy buildings are awesome, I don't even play and I'd like some.

Very very nice.
Your slums are going to provide a hell of a Necromunda or Cityfight table to play games on when it's all said and done. Looking forward to seeing more.

I didn't know you started this project again. I love these things man. Very creative, keep up the great work man.

I must say this project of yours is both inspiering and impressive.
byram - July 1, 2007 08:28 AM (GMT)
sorry, it still lokks too low tech for my taste...
but i shall have to wait and see how they finish up :D
styx - July 6, 2007 03:44 PM (GMT)
I like the concepts...I am working a Vampire Counts based scenery from the new Fantasy Set, the idea of the tower was what I already had in mind to do. Nice to know it comes together nicely.

Glad to see this is finally moving again bud!

Nice work there.
I had a similar idea.
Are you planning on doing a couple of ruined buildings as well?
I am thinking of putting one together with the roof with missing tiles, so one side of the building is destroyed so I can do some nice detail work inside. Think along the lines of pictures on the walls, a cupboard, tv, that sort of thing.

I'm no good at imagining the innards of futuristic dwellings. If I were to make one or two of them bombed out, it wouldn't be for some time. I'd have to start reading a lot more 40k novels for inspiration*, I currently have Ravenor and Ravenor Returned sitting on my desk waiting to be read, but I already have a lot on my plate as it is: 1/3 though
V by Thomas Pynchon, 1/3 way into
Einstein's Bridge by John Cramer, Just started
Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk, and I read all the way through
Deathly Hallows on release day.
*I've only ever read Blind, Dark Mechanicus, and the Eisenhorn trilogy.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about using the GW reference.
There is plenty of dark future reference to be found in the artwork (like necromunda) or even star wars, doctor who, and Red Dwarf to name a few.
Kugelblitz - July 30, 2007 05:17 PM (GMT)
while looking at your work, I had this flash of a lathe and plaster (Tudor style) house except that the wood bits were girders and the roof was made of overlapping chunks of old cabling runs...
Typhoid_Garry - December 30, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
This project isn't dead yet.
Haven't done much real work on this in some time, but I recently bought a bunch of supplies from Lowes for making a power structure, incinerator, defense lasers, etc.

I also bought a LED village on clearance at Target, gutted it, gave the empty shell to a coworker because she didn't believe I could remove all the wiring without damaging anything.

Most of the wiring will probably go toward lighting up
the Wall, but the rest is all smaller buildings/structures. I think at least one of the defense lasers could be on a functional turning platform by the time it's all done.
Lord Of Rebirth - December 31, 2007 12:46 AM (GMT)
Those are slums? I'd damned sure prefer to live in one of those than this lame tiny basement suite.
Jarleinn - December 31, 2007 08:22 PM (GMT)
Defence lasers? wiring up the wall? You're either rich or don't care about your debts... can't wait to see this finished, it'll look awesome.
geelgors - January 2, 2008 11:19 AM (GMT)
Being a long time lurker I finally registered to reply on this thread: This is great stuff! I love the original idea and it would be great to see it finished. In my old 3rd edition rulebook there is a rather small picture of a medieval class world, I always thought it would be cool to have some converted bretonnians on a board like this. And now finally with the new bretonnian met at arms plastics and CoD this is easily possible, I’m guessing you are the one going to realize this?
Deus Est - January 2, 2008 01:18 PM (GMT)
Whoa, looks awesome! And do I see some of the old old necromunda terrain? I havent seen that in a long long time :P

Wow, that was one hell of a haul :P
I was tempted to use the "I sense something, something I haven't sensed since..." line, but I decided to leave it out :D

I apologize for my lack of an avatar. I just joined yesterday amd haven't gotten around to that detail yet. I have been lurking around for some time now but my job, (I work for myself), and my children, (7 and 2), have kept me from being able to spend much time actually participating in the hobby over the last few years.
I am hoping joining up will inspire me to do more so I can put up some posts. I have seen some remarkable work shown in these posts and find myself getting inspired.
I was actuay finally driven to join so I could ask one very simple question of Garry. What are those yellow dome things in your haul from Lowe's. I spent 30 minutes in there trying to find them but had no luck.
Oh, I saw your post about the Necromunda bulk heads from eBay. I have a box with that many (or more) sitting in a closet. I am anxious to see what you do with yours. I find the remarkably thick edges to be somewhat limiting. I have used several of mine for a basement level of a ruined building with stone upper floors. I will dig it out and post a pic for you to consider.
Thanks.

Thank you very much. Looks like a great start to a defense laser dome. Much appreciated.

There are two things I really love about working where I do:
- 10% team member discount.
- when all the holiday stuff goes 90% off
When these two things come together, great things can happen. For example, I bought all this for under $2:

Also, my parents went to Ikea yesterday, my mom found me a couple of AA powered tiny LED light strings n clearance for 25 cents each. They're not terribly bright, but might make for some good interior lighting. I'd take pictures, but they're currently using the same two rechargables that were in my camera.
Lord Of Rebirth - January 5, 2008 03:19 PM (GMT)
I hated working in retail but discounts are good. I wish I could get my old warehouse job back. I saved $2000 on my TV. :3
>.> <.< I might need to sell my TV soon though.

Have you painted the tower or the home yet? The rustic and industrial mix is an interecting combo... I'm courious how you will detail it. ^_^
Ah... Lowes. A dangerous place to wander aimlessly about in. B)

No paint on the buildings yet, and there's a good chance that there won't be until after GamesDay '08. I have enough trouble focusing on my entries as it is.

Ruined Imperial Temple:

Only about 1/4 done, still a lot of GS/plasticard work. Currently waiting on a meat grinder in the mail so that I can make some decent rubble.

BTW, I use a meatgrinder too and boy is it HARD to use. Grind small amounts of sprue when you do this. It is quite a workout. Mine is a manual one btw.

I tried this once. Bought two meat grinder for around 10 € and while grinding the plastics i broke the axle on both of them.
Ever thought about putting the cut down sprues into some aceton(like you use for stripping the paint of metalminis). Let them melt and grind the plastic-aceton matter? When i got some time left i'll give it a try.
Fulcrum - April 28, 2008 09:17 PM (GMT)
This looks really good, I've always wanted to try and build large scale terrain, but always short on ideas and money :vryhppy:
You could add some bars, with prehaps some damaged (painted) neon signs, maybe a mutant beggar curled up somewhere. Bins, rats, little paper squares as propaganda leaflets. A ruined arbites patrol car, with a little cordon round it. A broken wall into a dark sewer, painted with a dark metallica orange to illustrate its industrial setting, street signs, crushed sign posts, rust. I love this.
I very much look forward to updates on this topic :)

Garry where does the "statue"/fig at the corner of the Temple comes from? Reminds me of somthing but can't put my finger on it...

This would just melt the plastic, would it not? My other thought would be to drop all the sprues into some liquid Nitrogen and then grind them or simply break them up with my hands, but liquid Nitrogen costs about 40.00 US for 2 gallons where I buy it and getting the carboys is a pain too.
So I grind small amounts at a time, and yes it is worth it because the rubble looks pretty good.

Yes, thats what i intended. The mass that comes out should be similar to ground meat. Maybe I'll give it a try.

It's from the Fantasy mansion/tower/inn kit. I still need to give it a bolt pistol or something, 40k it up a bit.
The funny thing about meat grinders is: I actually bought one second-hand about a year ago. I started feeding small sprue bitz into it, but they just came out the other end twisted and beat up. It was only then that I realized that the grinder had no blade. :( The one I'm waiting one comes with extra blades, and now I'll have a spare in case I break an axle.
