Title: Plastic Chimera Add-on Project - Updated 08/24/12
Description: A hopeful project that might materialize

Stapler - August 31, 2011 08:25 AM (GMT)
Over the years many of us had spend a lot of time to create "stuff" out of wood, plastic, paper, metal bits and even Lego to build our conversion; which is very time consuming. I did noticed there is a lot of companies starting to create conversion kits and material for us, and most of these kits are in resin; and because most of these offerings are garage kits, the quality is not always desirable.

Recently through a project, I have access to some tooling and plastic injection machines which can create steel molds and things... so I am asking for ideas on what you guys (and gals) wanted in terms of parts and bits that you want for general conversion?

For example, (1) Wheels and suspension for Chimera, if so, what size? (2) Extra wide tracks and road wheels, again, what is the width...

By creating a wish list I can then sort out the things that I can create on a single sprue, and may be two! Any ideas?

^_^
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the list so far:
  • Spaced armour plating for Land Raiders, Rhinos, Lemans, Chimeras and any other tanks. (Lord of Rebirth)
  • Very basic mechanical legs in a variety of sizes for replacing dread legs and up. (Lord of Rebirth)
  • Generic fiddly bits like generator panels and sensor clusters. (Lord of Rebirth)
  • Dark mechanicus parts of all sorts. (Lord of Rebirth)
  • Basic sorts of doors and hatches and armour panels usable on vehicles and scenery. (Lord of Rebirth)
  • Armored Wagon wheels for guard heavy weapons. (grimdisco)
  • Some engine type covers and grills of varying shape and sizes (round square rectangle etc). (grimdisco)
  • Some track guards as well. (grimdisco)
  • Vents and fans. (grimdisco)
  • Riveted armour sections to add to vehicles. (lone dirty dog)
  • Storage boxes. (lone dirty dog)
  • Some kinds of doors (for converting /scratch build). (lone dirty dog)
  • Miscellaneous hand tools (mallets, socket wrenches, pipe wrenches, cordless drills, hand saws, maybe a generic tool box, too). (KidCthulhu)
  • Bottles, ration tins, & gallon jugs for making interesting loot counters among other things. Plus the bottles could make for cool Molotov cocktails. (KidCthulhu)
  • A decent, generic medical kit. No Imperial logos like the one that comes with the Cadian command sprue. Just a hip pouch sized one with a few scalpels or syringes visible so that there's no doubt as to what it is. Maybe have a small circular symbol with a cross on it to drive the point home. (KidCthulhu)
  • Police-style Maglights or GI issue angle-neck flashlights. (KidCthulhu)
  • Cushioned Seats for drivers/crew. (Bugstomper)
  • Locks, levers, keyboards, indicator and control panels for easy detailing. (Bugstomper)
  • Grates, ladders, handles. (Bugstomper)
  • Doors and hatches. (Bugstomper)
  • Boxes, crates, tools, equipment (fire extinguishers?). (Bugstomper)
  • Universal riveted (armour-) plates to slap onto anything you want. (Bugstomper)
Will continue to add and amend; eventually will shortlist items that are requested most and then proceed to do some preliminary tech drawing... stay tuned!
;)

Thats a good list

Here is what i would like to see added to that list

Armored Wagon wheels for guard heavy weapons

Thats about all I would add to the above list

lone dirty dog - August 31, 2011 10:22 PM (GMT)
This would be a great idea I would like to see some engine type covers and grills of varying shape and sizes (round square rectangle ect) some track guards would be great as well vents and fans.

Riveted armour sections to add to vehicles and storage boxes some kinds of doors (for converting /scratch build) this list is going to be endless but bloody good fun :D

Thanks guys, already created a wish list on top of post... will continue to update as need!

:D

KidCthulhu - September 1, 2011 09:46 PM (GMT)
It may sound silly, but here's what I'd love to see for Warhammer 40K/Necromunda purposes:

Miscellaneous hand tools (mallets, socket wrenches, pipe wrenches, cordless drills, hand saws, maybe a generic tool box, too). They'd be great for details on Imperial vehicles, dioramas, & embellishing Necromunda heavies.

Bottles, ration tins, & gallon jugs for making interesting loot counters among other things. Plus the bottles could make for cool Molotov cocktails.

A decent, generic medical kit. No Imperial logos like the one that comes with the Cadian command sprue. Just a hip pouch sized one with a few scalpels or syringes visible so that there's no doubt as to what it is. Maybe have a small circular symbol with a cross on it to drive the point home.

Police-style Maglights or GI issue angle-neck flashlights. I always see IG & Ganger models and they -never- have flashlights. It always boggled my mind.

It's funny when you think about how many weird sci-fi bits GW makes and how many very useful, practical mundane things they -don't- make.

Bugstomper - September 4, 2011 09:51 AM (GMT)
i second the call for "imperial" Wheels - the right size to replace the orkified wheels on the ork Trukk and Wartrukk should also be good for wheeled chimeras etc.

what else comes to mind:
- Cushioned Seats for drivers/crew - gw usually molds them as one piece with the butt of the occupant...
- locks, levers, keyboards, indicator and control panels for easy detailling
- grates, ladders, handles
- doors and hatches
- boxes, crates, tools, equipment (fire extinguishers?)
- Universal riveted (armour-) plates to slap onto anything you want

*** UPDATE: Sep 20, 2011 ***

Thanks those who had submitted their thoughts! ^_^

Working on some prototype sketches for these vehicle add-ons right now. I am trying to work on two IG vehicles at the same time as they are very close to layout and design!! Here is the initial plan:

Chimera APC
- Track Guards
- Existing Turret Enhancement
- A new vehicle top to replace existing one
- A six-wheeler conversion with suspension system
- A redesign of the back exit

Leman Russ Tank
- Track Guards
- A new exhaust system layout
- A possible tank body extension

The objective is to mix and match with existing GW parts and not replacing them in the process. New pieces are options to enhance the outlook of the vehicles. I will try to post some prototype photos later on, probably two weeks from now!

;)

grimdisco - September 20, 2011 11:08 PM (GMT)
Sounds good to me. I'll be watching closely, and waiting for when you are able to sell them.

Chimerus - September 22, 2011 06:20 PM (GMT)
I second fiddly bits, technical looking bitz.
good looking dread-type legs would be swell.
aircraft jet turbines!

Gran the Slayer - September 23, 2011 05:19 AM (GMT)
Oh wat a nice opinnion

For me it woulgb de nice if we can get:

Robed legs for normals 28mm human
Feamale Torsos and legs in Flak armour
Hydraulic devices Biomecanics
Landing gears for Flyers
Canopy part for flyers in different shapes

So much ideas

Hope that helps tp find descisions

Looking good, liking very much the new rear part as well. Getting rid of the toting lasguns is a huge blessing I think.

You could also do some minor conversion part that could be used to cover those lasgun ports if not a full body kit.

Here is what I probably will do:

(1) Make a new round cap with a rectangular slit to cover the lasgun ports.

(2) To make a new top chassis similar to the one I posted above.

Finally get time to get a progress report on the Wheeled Chimera...
user posted image
The new top chassis had the turret moved a little backward to allow more room for the front hatches. There is an option to allow the frontal gun area to be lined up with the rest of the front portion. All the "white" areas are newly created "separate" options that can be added.

The back side of the Chimera...
user posted image
The back door is redesigned to give a more modern look. The front and tail lights are separate pieces so that you can put them anywhere.

The optional tools that might come with the kit, if spruce space allowed...

With the front wheel removed showing the suspension...
user posted image
If you had noticed from my previous post, the front wheel had been moved a little bit away from the other two wheels.

For gamers who still preferred the original tracked design:
user posted image
Head and tail lights from the wheeled version can be used on the track guard. This photo shown the "Front Extension" being removed to retain the original look...

The images you have seen here are basic (and almost final) preliminary work. Once I am satisfied with it, I will start to add details to the parts that had been created here. Before doing so, please give comments so that I can look into them and start work...

Cheers!

looks good, but arn't the leaf springs upside down? i could bewrong;0

Stapler - October 18, 2011 06:05 PM (GMT)
In fact this is also the question that I had asked myself too... I'd brought several model kits for references and this is what I found out: Earlier version of trucks and vans had the leaf string upside down but recent version had it reversed.

Correct me if I am wrong too...

Vyper - October 19, 2011 07:03 PM (GMT)
Hello mate, nice work there, yes you are correct with the whole leaf spring issue. Looking forward to seeing what's next?

I'd vote for Ad mech tank parts to utilise Leman rus tracks and create some heresy era Ad mech war machine.

I only know from old cars:)

but, i've looked through pics and my limited understanding of them says they are upside down, as the spring wouldn't absorb as much... i'd flip em, but you say older trucks had it that way so up to you;)

everything i'veread says it's upsdide down and a bad idea;0 but thats semi modern cars.

i'd love to know what kits have em the other way, i'm officialy intriged.

Those tools are ace!

I'd like to see shotguns (for vet conversions) without that silly looking rack on top, and long barreled autocannons for Hydra conversions. Of course, the Hydra conversion may be moot if the rumors of a plastic kit is true. Or headlight cages, I think I have seen those on tanks before.

Seen this from chapterhouse?

Yes, I have seen this but this project had always been on my "things to do list..." for a long while, just doesn't have the resources to do it. Now with the proper tooling and equipment, I am very tempted to give it a try!

I might eventually produce some resin masters to test fit again on the Chimera, then create a digital master of the parts to layout a sprue for the injection mold. Right now, I am doing a "part count" and adding details to the parts that I had created.

Stay tuned!

Have not been here for a while I have to say impressive this is looking good hope to see this on the shelves soon I think I could find a use for this …………. really clean work great detail you have my commitment to buy ;)

Some more cleanup work done on the parts with details added... Here is the Track Guard for the unmodified Chimera:

As suggested by Brother Weasel, I have modified the leaf-spring suspension a little bit. Seems more logical this way... What do you think?

The only thing that I probably will do for the Rhino is a one piece extra armour!

If time permits, I might wanted to do a modified Leman Russ based on the Imperial Mcharius Heavy Tank from Forge World; that is, a mini version of it using the Leman Russ chassis. Should not require a lot of work!

Right now, I still want to work on the Chimera a bit... probably a new turret (in resin) and a new set of tires with chains for the winter look!

Any more suggestions?
^_^

The main purpose of this exercise is to produce a skeleton wheeled Chimera for other people to do additional conversions. Depending on my budget, it will either be a resin or plastic kit if there is a demand for it.

The initial plan is to do a plastic one, but in light of the economic situation worldwide, I might want to keep my money in my pocket instead of spending it for experience and experiment... hahaha!!

^_^

Nicely executed I must admit.

Having gotten that kit from Chapterhouse, I was a bit dissappointed in the quality. Lots of holes, lots of flash, and it didn't really match up to the Chimera for my tastes, but I can work with it.

Now, if this kit is sold, it really seems very clean, very easy to use. And of course, I love the tools posted earlier.

Stapler - November 17, 2011 04:52 PM (GMT)
"lone dirty dog" and "Pax Urbis Pax Imperi"... If I were to produce the kit, it will be of the highest quality! Unfortunately, I am busy at the moment with an urgent job and was not able to work on the project. Will probably resume next month if I have the time to!

In the meantime, I had completed the small trophy sculpt; will post it later if I have the time to take some photos. Almost all customers expected us to finish jobs before Christmas! :(

Stay tuned! B)
