What up y'all?

I'm getting to the point with my Deathwatch WIP that I need to start thinking about paint schemes. "But wait" I hear you say, "Deathwatch are black and silver with one other colour you git".

Yes they are, but is there a way to improve my black, silver and one other colour approach? You tell me.

I used Lorenzo from the Space Hulk game as my test dude, as he's got enough shiny bits to make him a good example of both character and footslogger.

Let me know where improvements are, but please, I beg you, no NMM or painting white suggestions, I am lame at both.I will probably step up the level of weathering on them though. So, I could do with some links on how to weather black armour :D

That's meant to be blood coming from his mouth, but looks like a bad aim for the shoulder pad. I'll add some more to the hairline and forehead to bang him up a bit more.

I have a good camera, but not good lighting :D

Love it! Looks great. Only suggestion I have is that maybe the black cape and tabbard add TOO much black. Perhaps the outside of the cape should be red, and the inside something else Blood Angely (I'm assuming this guy is still a Blood Angel or at least a successor), like purple.

I think if you painted the cape a deep purple, it would fit well in with the model. I agree with the above comment, just a little too much black.

To photograph use a white background with omnidirectional lighting (from a couple angles so there's no shadows). A black suggestion is a real dark grey, as his base with black in the recess. Then that base grey with codex grey mixed in, say 50/50 and a final codex highlight. Then a watered down badab black wash and you should be well on the way to good looking black armour. Other than that, look at a color wheel to see the colors opposites to make the details contrast and jump out.

That help any?

If you weren't interested in doing that, I would say a couple of washes would add a whole bunch of depth to a couple places that need it. I.E> the storm bolter, the chest eagle and the iron halo hood ornament do dad on the top of the armour.
