Title: Imperial Dropship
Description: Small/Medium insane scratchbuild

Tebrey - February 10, 2011 08:29 PM (GMT)
Hello,

I haven't posted a thread on here in a while. So I thought I would, lol.

The guys over on Boot Camp have talked me into building a dropship for my guard. I've decided to give a go.

I had so good ideas for smaller and larger dropships, but I wanted a medium one.

Here is what I came up with:

The idea is to transport a baneblade or 4 leman russ size vehicles to the battlefield.

I started this a couple of days ago.

Here is what I have done so fat:

Great Idea! Looking awsome!

Heble - February 10, 2011 10:28 PM (GMT)
Now thats a drop ship. Need a baneblade?, Or an entire company? We can deliver :P

Thanks.

I'm just blocking out the form right now. I'll add details once the basic shape is in place.

I do Like!

For the exterior detailing what sources of inspiraton are you thinking of using? The image on the front of Codex Imperial Guard shows the landers as having an egeal head / 2 egeal heads.

Not for this one, grin. I have one planned for some other time (when I have more time) that will be like those.

For now, I'm just trying to match the picture I drew of my smaller one.

I wanted something larger than a Valkyrie (since it brings tanks) but not so large as to require it never leaves my house. The ones on the cover of the guard book would be 8-10 foot long at least.

I'm actually using the Forgeworld naval aircraft as a guide.

Looking good!!!

Awesome looking, great build and clean execution!
And the size is right in my ball-park :D

I look forward to see this developing and especially to all the detailing. Do you make the top removable, so you can access the inside?

Cheers
Klaus

Thank you!

I did my original sketch (first post) to scale, so far it is holding up.

I too, am looking forward to the detailing, that is the fun part, as you know!

I didn't make so it could open. However, the opening for the bay is 12cm, even with my clumsy paws I should be able to reach in there and detail it up a bit. I want to add lights (non-functional) to the ceiling, and loops for lashing down tanks and cargo.

The exterior is getting thrusters and anything else I can think of. I'll probably do something crazy like a detailed cockpit.

Wow!. Huge dropship. :o

I'm inpressed with progress so far. Look forward to see this develop.

Have you considered how it would be used in a game, or are you intending it for display only?

Tebrey - February 12, 2011 02:11 PM (GMT)
Thank you.

Haven't given it too much thought.

I'm mainly making becouse I love to scratchbuild. Grin.

Made a thruster, now i just need to make more...

Great work.
I like your thrusters and the new two pieces (afterburners?) look really nifty :)
It really comes together nicely.
Keep it up.
Cheers

Fantastic work! You don't mess around that's for sure.

Thanks!

The afterburners are for the atmosphere engines (with the intakes), although they are probably hybrid scram-jets. I'll also have to two main rockets/space engines in the back. Not too sure yet what I'm doing there. I'll just let something happen, I suppose.

Been trying to decide if this thing should be armed or not? part of me thinks not... but then I can't think of any imperial vehicle that doesn't have some weapons.

Couple of defensive turrets at points and twin linked lascannon at front?

The original idea was four defensive turrets. I'm just not sure how it will look.

You're making very good progress and it develops nicely.
However, with the latest images, I kind of get the impression, that the forward vents/intakes seem a bit small for the rest of the ship and the thrusters...
But maybe that's just me :)
Cheers

I think some of that is visual distortion. But, I did a little research just to be sure. Grin.

Turbine jet engines have an intake about the same size as the afterburner (those what I've got). This looks strange to us because we are used to turbofan engines. Jet engines where the intake is much larger, like jumbo jets. Turbine engines are more suited to military operations. It also is visually very similar to the rocket turbine engine, which is what it probably would be.

I'll have to see what it looks like with wings before I try to figure out what to do. Although I don't really have much more room to make it bigger.

Chimerus - February 15, 2011 08:18 AM (GMT)
nice big project! kinda reminds me of a cargo container with engines strapped on.... which is VERY Imperial! I approve! maybe some vertical thrusters or ports for such?

Tebrey - February 16, 2011 04:50 AM (GMT)
You know. It's odd. It has thrusters. I posted pics of them up above. I just didn't post the picture of them on the model. Weird. I'll add to the next update.

Woah! Most impressive!

Klaus, not Santa - February 16, 2011 09:23 AM (GMT)
Nice cockpit!
I really like how you get this all together - and I'm sure you're the best to judge on the intake size too.
Keep it coming :)
Cheers

Not much progress.

I'm really not liking the defense turret.

Sigh.

Maybe something smaller and automated. It just sticks up too high. I know it has to... but I don't like it.

yeah... I'd go for something automated or more recessed. Don't go down the road that the Storm Raven went...

I think you are right.

I was going to make manned ones becouse of the FW bomber, but it just doesn't look right.

The cockpit is not glued in place. I'll put clear plastic in there once it is all painted.

Nice clean lines on the cockpit.
Will you do glass/clear plastic for it?
Cheers

hot dang this is a mighty build tebrey, always been a fan of your builds this reminds me of the dragon gunship from avatar

http://images.wikia.com/jamescameronsavata...agongunship.png

will be interested to see how this turns out

Tebrey - February 24, 2011 02:43 PM (GMT)
Thanks!

Yes, I'll be putting clear plastic in the cockpit. Needs more work to get it to sit right, but the frame is removable.

Lights and targeters will go on the raised area around the cockpit.

Hi!

What a huge model! :o Like the stout body, and the location of the personnels and work places, just like on a bomber :)
BTW, could you post some pix of the full modell?
