Title: Tau Broadside Auxiliary Troop
Description: August Pledge- unfinished

Typhoid_Garry - August 31, 2010 09:14 PM (GMT)
Started with an abundance of extra stegadon heads, grew from there. Still a lot to do before I start work on appendages, pack, or weapons.

As my non-wargaming roommate pointed out; it looks a bit "Gears of War".

Aw, he's a grumpy giant railgun weilding monster. He needs a kitten!

Amazing work as always. I can't wait to see it finished. How many are you going to make?

Kitten isn't a bad idea actually, too bad my choices from the GW range are Neferata's vamp-cat, long out of production Gyrinx (which i have one), or cutting one from a Lahmian. I don't trust my skills enough to sculpt my own yet.

How many more I make is dependant on how easily I construct a second one. This was the prototype, I'd like to make an easily castable second, or at least a castable body to work armor onto. A lot of time was spent cutting wood spheres.

That's not a grumpy giant railgun-wielding monster, that's O'Shova after gaining a considerable amount of weight! Give it a little two-headed Vulture-esque pet that could count as Kairos Faithweaver..

Kidding aside, I do believe this will become quite a remarkable Broadside Auxiliary troop(s/er)

It's not often I look at a conversion and smile with glee - this is clever, well executed and I can't wait to see how you continue with it.

Sterling work!

this is a very cool idea!

Minor update: Skinned the ribbing armor, nearly done with collar, working on chestpiece details:

Sorry, not seen this one before, really like how it's going. Very retro style rubber ribs on there!

Great stuff as usual... I wonder how far this log will get... :P lol

But seriously good stuff, just like your Koalas..... and the Kroot warband..... Squat overlord.....

Still you finished the Genestealer VW and the Exodite howdahs.

I wanted to make a giant Xenos for the 60mm competition but I coulden't figure out how to do the legs, so i'm very curious to see what you do in that department.

Keep it up.

Hey hey hey! This site is called "Work In Progress", not "Look What I Finished"! :)

The Stealer Jitney was never actually finished, it still needs headlights and a sculpted details...

There doesn't seem to be much interest in my finished work anyway:

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

It is the only model I'm currently working on for myself, so I do hope to see it through to completion. *crosses fingers*

maxxev - September 7, 2010 02:45 PM (GMT)
The P.I.P forums recive little to no interest from most people in my experience.

the fact that you got 2 comments on your impressive Necron lord is a miracle (also the fact you managed to make an interesting necron lord is a miracle :P).

You certainly have an imagination on you, please just reign in into Tau Aux.... (because I am only interested in Tau Aux and my imagination is nothing like as good as yours, I love to see what yuo come up with, that's not to say your other projects arn't also cool, I just don't want to own them... lol).

I have a Demiurg battlesuit design in my head at the moment from a concept I stumbled on, and until I get it out somehow I can't move on.... If I had tens / hundreds of thousands lying around I would be getting it sculpted and produced in plastic :( as it is i'm still thinking about it in resin.....

Anyway, in true cheerleader style KEEP GOING GARY, KEEP GOING!!!

YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Not to compare my paintwork to yours, but for examples from my experience:
Imperial Touren WIP Thread: 56 posts
(my highest post count on a thread (no idea how many are mine, lol))
Imperial Touren PIP Thread: 6 posts
Tau Touren WIP Thread: 48 posts
Tau Touren PIP Thread: 7 posts (see Avatar, 4 of these posts are mine)

People are far more interested in commenting on the WIP and possibly getting some ideas / constructive critisism than in the finished object.

Quick aesthetic question:

Goggles?

Bill - September 8, 2010 06:18 AM (GMT)
I don't think it would work well with the rest of the model. What about a visor of some sort?

Typhoid_Garry - September 8, 2010 09:48 AM (GMT)
Well, for now the goggle is simply affixed with GS, so when the time comes, it can come off. I'm still putty casting the other half to see what it would look like complete. As an alternative, I'm considering something along the lines of a small HUD:

I'm thinking it's a bit much, even if I cut it down.

Also tacked on the beginning of the gut plate, and clothed one side of the chest.

Klaus, not Santa - September 8, 2010 01:10 PM (GMT)
Wow, this dude will rock!
Really nice.

I do tend to agree, that the HUD may be too big.
I was thinking you could probably add it to the one ring around the eye - this seems like a goggle anyway.
You know, like they have it on modern flight helmets and that he can fold in and out as needed...
maybe like this

or this

probably not as big as this one:

I hope this helps.
Keep it up!

Big Tim - September 8, 2010 03:11 PM (GMT)
Looking great TG! I agree with Klaus though, in that a smaller HUD would be better.

Klaus' pics made me think of the Dominion HUDs from DS9:

Keep us appraised of your progress. I love what I am seeing here.

Bill - September 8, 2010 04:18 PM (GMT)
I kind of like the big HUD, but a monocle display would be pretty cool! Reminds me of one of the villains from The Last Starfighter. This guy. Or a DBZ Scouter.

GreyDeath - September 9, 2010 02:49 PM (GMT)
Gary this is awesome.. As always your work blows me away with how much imagination you have and work you put into your figures.
Very, very cool and great work.

Not a big fan of the big hud shield.. maybe smaller or like options Klaus and others have shown would work better?

Like others have said.. Keep it up dont give up you can do it.
:D

maxxev - September 10, 2010 07:01 AM (GMT)
Gary this is looking fan-bloody-tastic.

I think you should do a totally sculpted head and cast this one.

Of course i'm still interested in seeing how you tackle the legs.

I hope the head isn't glued in so you can make more poses from one body.

I've intentionally left the head unglued for now.

You amaze me again and again. Great work so far. I had to laugh when I noticed that I attached the wooden balls in my Tau WIP project exactly the same way as you did (without the putty that is).

Typhoid_Garry - September 22, 2010 10:40 AM (GMT)
Been thinking about how to approach sculpting a head from scratch*, and at the same time not being satisfied with the gut armor, got an idea:

A few minutes in MSPaint:
user posted image

When/if I do sculpt a head, I may leave it either without rhino horns, or just one, because I like the idea of having an armor plate protecting below the crest. It also means I'd have less flesh/natural detail to sculpt, which sounds easier to me.

What say you all?

*even though the whole point of the build was to do something with all my extra stegadon heads.

Jade Lancer - September 22, 2010 11:09 AM (GMT)
I Love this so far Gary. I think though that losing both horns makes the model not as tough looking... If I had to leave one of them leave the smaller one up front.

Big Tim - September 22, 2010 04:44 PM (GMT)
I'd leave one horn on Garry. With no horns, I think it starts to look rather Krootoxish. I am loving the way this is looking so far though. Add the armor, but keep as many of the Rhino/Dino aspects that you can.

Keep up the great work!

Nevermore - September 22, 2010 05:52 PM (GMT)
I like the mock up with no horns. Yes, he looks less tough without the horns, but he also looks less bestial and more like a sapient species without them.

Typhoid_Garry - September 23, 2010 08:34 PM (GMT)
A bit more of the lower belly/waist armor:

And a size comparison:
user posted image
He's definitely bigger than I had planned. Could even be Inquisitor-scale...

maxxev - September 23, 2010 08:39 PM (GMT)
My thoughts would be to leave the larger horn and have it protrude through the armour.

Great stuff, still waiting for those legs... lol

Regardless, it's still looking awesome

I dont care what size this is I love it, if you finish it (or even not) and you don't want it please PM me as I want first dibs (will pay for it ). I don't know if its me though but rock steady and beat bop springs to mind LOL  Love the look of this great work keep it coming ............

oh, now you can do better than that Gary :P lol

Personally however I'd scrap the Aux Broadside idea.

Put him on a drednaught base and make a Apoc Datafax for them (thats what I was going to do with the idea in my head that never came around to anything).

I imagined these hulking aliens in derivative tau armour charging across the battlefield, much like a rhino, trampling and smashing everything in their path.

Korraz - September 25, 2010 03:23 PM (GMT)
Or you could give him a bolt thrower and play him as Great Knarloc.

Dragunov - September 25, 2010 10:05 PM (GMT)
I like, the size thing yeah, may not be broadside scale but certainly a nice piece in the army!!!

Just curious about the technique, how are you getting the nice clean panel lines in there?

Xenon - September 25, 2010 10:09 PM (GMT)

Just curious about the technique, how are you getting the nice clean panel lines in there?

I generally like working in very thin layers over a plasticard base when it comes to brown stuff putty. The panel lines are marked while the putty is still soft. Once it's dry, I cut a line parallel to the original marks down to the plasticard and remove any putty in between. This is all done with an exacto. Some parts, like the trapezoid tab jetting from the collar onto the chest armor, was a bit of excess uncured putty that I flattened onto a piece of plastic. Once dry, I smoothed it out and cut it to shape. Once glued in place, I filled all the seams and smoothed it again. The three rectangles on the waist armor were pressed in with the end of a piece of plasticard beam while the putty was still fresh.

Thanks for asking.

*Almost forgot, the cooling grill beneath his chin was made by repeatedly pressing a plasticard edge into fresh putty.

Dragunov - September 28, 2010 10:21 AM (GMT)
Awesome, thanks for the indepth guide!

Have you ever used procreate? Was just wondering how it compares with Brown Stuff in terms of usage and finish...?

Thanks again!

Tech Adept - September 28, 2010 03:36 PM (GMT)
Iīm always impressed by those sculpturing skills. Like all the small details on the collar of the battlesuit, it looks fantastic!

Donīt call me stupid if I ask, but what is the difference between this brown putty and green stuff? Sorry for this question, but I need some advice, what kind of material is the most suitable for sculturing.

Keep up the good work!

maxxev - September 28, 2010 05:11 PM (GMT)
Brownstuff holds an edge better and its more easily filed.
Greenstuff is better for organic shapes.
Procreate is in between the two but I find it flakes if you overwork it (as an amateur I often do).

All three of these are air drying putties (around 1 hour before it's no longer workable, 12 hours to dry completely) with a consistency similar to un-chewed chewing gum.

Milliput is a pain in the arse, but again easily filed, IMO it's more of the kind of putty
you put on something then carve and file away at it till you have the desired result.

Milliput has a consistency much like clay, I can't work with it, but many of the best miniature sculptors do, air dries in about 12 hours

Sculpey / Super sculpey / Cernit and fimo (and there are a few other around) are all clays than need to be baked before they go hard, i.e. they are workable right up until you pt them in the oven on a low temp for an hour or more.

These kinds of putties were used by the Rackham crew, and seem to give good results to the sculptors that use them.

It should be noted that the most often considered master of sculpting uses Greenstuff almost exclusively (Tom Mier).

Also most of them can be mixed, even outside of their drying types (I read an article by a bloke who mixed greenstuff with sculpey once).

I tried greenstuff with milliput, I still couldn't make it work.

Procreate and greenstuff works ok.

I have but have not yet used Brownstuff.

Any updates on this? This is probably my favorite log to follow on any site. I love this idea. It is just great and can't wait to see a final product.
