Title: Dogs Of War
Description: just a quick question

Marshal_Ezra - January 27, 2009 09:18 PM (GMT)
I've heard rumblings of GW attempting to phase out the Dog of War army, but what of the Dogs of War rare choice?

Are taking, say Ogres, in say, a Vampire forCounts army, allowed? most of the orges say the Dog of War special rule, and the older style army books used to specifically note that you can take Dogs of War as rare choices... the newer ones dont. does this mean you cant take them anymore? or what?

i think it would be allowed for at least friendly play, but any word on tourney?

opinions?

well in the ogre book it says that they may be dogs of war
so i would say take some of the ogres in any army

Attempting? The rumor is that they will in fact phase them out.

Are the Dogs of War allowed to be used in VC's book, if they are they'll be a rare choice. And if they are not listed in the book you cannot use them at most tourney's like a GT. Now local organizers may allow them. DoW do not appear in Brettonians, Warriors or Demons of Chaos, Dark Elves, and I believe High Elves, don't know about VC and Lizards. Rumor is that they will not appear in Skaven or Beasts of Chaos either.

Friendly play is probably fine as you normally know your opponent, tourneys around here will typically tell you up front if you can use them, say for instance Adepticon will list all of the allowed books and lists.

Unfortunately, I think DoW are going to be phased out. While 6th Edition said that they could still be used in army lists, and 7th said things along similar lines, the current army books make no mention of DoW in any of the Rare sections. I think the problem started with 5th Edition when they did bring out a complete Dogs of War army book, which from what I heard was less then successful, DoW units were kept on until they found a market for a proper mercenary army.

If those mumblings are true, guess they didn't find that market.

PsychosisPC - January 28, 2009 12:33 AM (GMT)
And the current ogre book if I remember correctly is 6th edition.

Anarnaxe - January 28, 2009 12:45 AM (GMT)
Of course, and the Wood Elves book, Beastmen and Tomb Kings as well, but I wouldn't be surprised if, when their updated, they no longer contain options for mercenaries.
Shame though, coz some of those units were the best human warriors the studio ever made in my opinion (And before the Hellfire cannon was brought out, the best way to get a Chaos army some cannons :demon: )

The new Empire book also drops the mention of the DoW. The ruling when I called GW was that they were still allowed based on the rules available online. I dunno if they are there still or not. They also said that the Ogres are still available as rare choices to most armies.

hmm...

thats good to know, but my followup question would be, how do you know which armies?

::shrug:: lets look at this rationally... when is GW ever 100% clear on anything army specific? ;)

Anarnaxe - January 28, 2009 01:59 PM (GMT)
Generally, any army which can take mercenaries can use Ogres.
And if you really want to know, that would be;

Empire (No longer available)
Dwarves
Dark Elves (No longer available)
High Elves (No longer available)
Wood Elves
Warriors of Chaos (No longer available)
Beasts of Chaos
Vampire Counts (No longer available)
Tomb Kings
Lizardmen (No longer available)
Orcs & Goblins (No longer available)
Skaven
Daemons of Chaos (Not available)

Bretonnians do NOT get Ogre mercenaries, or mercenaries of any kind.

That is of course, if they army books still had the options for Dogs of War, which many don't now.

EDIT: I knew there was something I had forgotten :D

PsychosisPC - January 29, 2009 12:15 AM (GMT)
Like I said they are not in the Demons book period, no mercenaries, no using anything from Warriors or Beasts either like it used to be. I would guess that is the same for Dark Elves and Lizardmen, but I have not looked in those books.

Take Warriors of Chaos off that list, regular Ogres are not in the book, no mercenaries, unless you qualify them as the Chaos Ogre variety, and Beasts of Chaos will soon parallel the Warriors with just Chaos Ogres this coming fall.

The Chaos Ogres variety is very nice though, can even mark them, but they are limited to a Special choice in Warriors.

Anarnaxe - January 29, 2009 12:35 AM (GMT)
The Chaos Ogres are ok, but, they looked rushed. The older Ogres looked much better, though a little cartoonish, but theres nothing wrong with that.

Regarding the last post, I know I forgot something....To mention which army books no longer had Dogs Of War options.

I wouldn't consider the Ogres in the Warrior book (Beasts as well if they stay in the upcoming book) as a Dogs of War unit, because Ogres are very much a part of the Chaos army aesthetic, I remember them in Realm of Chaos (earliest Chaos book I ever saw). Granted Chaos Ogres are different to "regular" Ogres, but in the sense that a Human Chaos Warrior is different to a soldier in the Empire.

Same goes for Orcs and Goblins and Empire. All three armies have had the option to field ogres at one stage or another in various editions.

My knowledge of Fantasy is limited to around 5th edition onwards, so if I've missed something or got something wrong, then by all means, correct me.

I was talking from a specifically list standpoint.

I think the old metal models completely suck and this being WIP I would model them using the current line of plastics.
