Title: Hardware + Porting - Need Help

Alfie - April 1, 2011 02:35 PM (GMT)
Hey Guys, i've just gotten to year 1999 and have about $80m and a good bit in stock/shares.

I want to start production on a new console, i have a team of about 20 HW staff trained up to a fairly high level (all rated 70-90).

When i go to make a console i pick everything that is rated the highest. Then as i advance i have to place all the internal parts in the correct place and join them up together or something? I dont have a clue. Everytime i put them in they either arent connecting or its not flowing the heat around correctly or something?

I just need an image if possible of what it should look like.

Also is there anything i should do before starting production on a new console that will make my console best?

I have researched PS1, PS2 and Xbox to the max in 3d graphics and have steady income from around 3 or 4 game releases each year + publishing contracts. My other question was this - I have currently max attribitues for Playstation and Nintendo in the 2d area but when i make a game for playstation and port it to nintendo i get usually a 9 or 10 rated playstation game and i'm lucky to get a 6 for the nintendo version of the same game. How can i get them to both be good? Im concerned as i want to make games in the future for ps2, xbox and my console and dont want to be forced to concentrate on just 1 console.

Thanks and i hope this isn't confusing.

I know this is kind of old, but I will try to help you as much as possible.

I would recommend at least 30 hardware employees, 40 would be ideal.

Also, consoles are VERY expansive to produce and can quickly cause your company to go bankrupt. I would recommend at least 100 million, more the safer. To be safe, wait until 200 million.

If you pick the best parts, your console will be very expansive and may take longer to make, but will probably last longer. For your first console, I say keep costs under $1000 as much as possible.

Before you do though, make sure to research chips such as chip miniaturization. Its in the company knowledge page, but you need a research facility to research them I believe. There's also the peripherals page where you should research apps (word processor, database, etc) and console controller and casing.

You have to keep everything apart with space in between to prevent over heating. At the bottom, there is a box that will tell you how good the connection is and the cost (Something like: CPU-GPU = Fair, $20) Move them around and experiment until you have something with a good rating that doesn't overheat.

Some advice: Don't stop making games! You will need to money!

As for porting, I cannot help you much but I can say that the best way to find out is to try different things and experiment. Also, try making games only for Nintendo and only for Playstation. Your company's experience (not knowledge) may affect porting. Also, the game genre may affect the quality of the port as well.

It's about starting a hardware only company but there's some good advice on producing consoles.

Hope this helped and good luck!
