How do you take a stock bug and get that much clearence out of it?My brother lives in Hawaii and he to is looking for a cheap baja bug that he can put a surf board on and get to the good surf spots that require a little offroading. He said that he has a engine already but I was just curious to see how he could get the clearence for cheap? He will be on a budget and doesn't need anything special because it is for just around town and surf spots? Thanks

Tut still no cheap bugs down that way?My brother is flying in from Hawaii next month and wants to find a cheap baja bug.Like I said,he has a nice engine for it already and it doesn't have to be pretty.I would like to get him one with some travel in something like the beginning stages of Emma?I can have my buddy get the Kings at cost but I don't think he wants that serious just a nice little baja?Maybe you could keep your eyes open for me?Thanks

Samba.com is usually a good place to look.
I have a couple people keeping their eyes out.

Cheap would be to buy some 3x3 rear arms and longer front arms.
Add some stronger torsion bars and lift the car up a little more.
You will need longer axels and could go better cvs.
Also they make lift spindles for the front of a bug and even body lift kits so you
can go bigger tires etc.

Couple of ways of doing it.

It is really a tough call because you can almost not find a year that will work.
So find one that is in good shape and go from there.

You will want to add your own back cage and install some 3x3 arms.
Probably might want to go coil overs but if not you can go buy some pretty beefy
torsion bars and mount up a good bypass shock or big shock and valve it.
Maybe later take the valved shock off and replace for a bypass.

Find a front end that is Link Pin.
That would be most important to me but most come with swing axle rear ends
so you have to put in the IRS pivots which you can weld in.

Anyways ya just a fun clean year is all good.

Good luck and keep us posted.
All that wheel travel costs money... lots of money. I can actually do more and fit
35 inch tires instead of the 33s I had on her if I had more money etc.

This bug was very cool and did very well and road over everything as it was with the 33's so no big deal. Plus you go 35s and your going to need a much bigger motor than just VW motor.
The pro guys with there baja bugs do type 4's air cooled and then they can pull the 35's and hit speeds of 90 mph.
Sweet.

Cool good luck as I had always wanted to do a baja bug and after doing Emma
I would love to have the funds to build her for driving to work, beach and to the desert for pre running etc.
