Remote res do better as the canisters are larger.
So more oil means more cooling. The only problem for making a clean
car is they also get in the way of where to mount them and where to put them.
If you put them inside etc. then they do not get fresh air and you loose that
extra cooling. If they go outside they are usually in your line of sight or something.
So the piggy backs loose some volume etc. but are nicely mounted in direct fresh air cooling them. So the actually cool more efficiently usually.

So in the case of us sportsman racers I would go piggy back for the clean mounting and set up. Plus a remote you have to buy brackets and clamps etc.
to mount them and secure them etc.

Also my brothers have torn their lines off their shocks going to the remote reservoirs on the fox shocks and ended their day of racing. It is a small braided line.

Think on it we can do whatever you can afford/prefer.

I will be going piggy back for now on, on all of my sportsman type cars for cleanliness, ease of mounting, easy cooling and mounting is no extra cost and does not get in the way of making a nice hood or body for the car.

Think on it.

Here is the two set ups.

Take a look at the large hooped hoses sticking up and the reservoirs themselves mounted out in the open on the hood to keep them cooler.
user posted image
user posted image

And the simple piggy back mounted on to the same front end.
user posted image
user posted image

The back is even worse as the two shocks are right on one another.

Clean piggy back will be like this, clean and smooth no hoses or mounting to the frame.
user posted image

Or like this where the hoses had to get special fittings to make them turn and not hit my other shock and longer hoses had to be added. Costing even more.
user posted image

But I am not talking you into anything. As I have done we will make them work and we will make them better using what I have learned and both of your guys great ideas it will be even better either way.

Just a heads up of the differences I have ran into.

The spacers were 3 inch total not counting the heims that go onto the arm.
Then they usually get welded on and a lot of guys make double shear plates
on the top to hold them even better.

We will make it work no worries. wink.gif

Thanks Pepper! We try to do the best we can / know how. And we appreciate the encouragement!!!

Tut you forgot to mention your thought on 5/8" shaft or 7/8" shaft for the front shocks. Let me know what you think, I am going order the springs Monday but he can't get the 300lbs for a month, so we are going to get 275lb instead, then if we don't like it we'll get the 300lb ones later.

I am working on trying to make the next race, I have to work that Sat. but its a night race right? If I can we'll show up on Sat some time. Race starts at 4:00?

Thanks

I'm sorry about that go with the larger shaft to be safe if it's not to much more.
I have the larger shaft size and have never hurt, bent or broken one in 9 years.
To be safe I would especialy knowing your going to race it if it's not to much more.

Sorry about forgetting to post that.
unsure.gif

The 275 will be a fine top coil set up i'm sure. Especially with your smaller tires you should have less weight, unsprung weight and that 25 pounds compared to mine should be fine actually. A hair more valving and you won't even know they are lighter. Plus your frame is a little lighter than mine too.
No worries I think your going to be fine with them. Plus that's the top spring
so it is all good.

Diirk I mounted and welded an actual tire carrier sold from Kartek onto
my cross tube that is just in front of my engine.
I then just strap my high lift jack onto that cross bar where I added a couple "L" tabs for it to rest on. I don't have any pics right now. Plus she is out in the trailer so little hard to take pics. But if you need I will get one.

you could buy some of those bolt on tubing clamps and make your own tire carrier and then that goes over the engine. Remove it by un bolting it when you get home to get to the motor if need be.
Did that on several cars at Mosebillt.

Thanks for the info. If you get a chance, I'd love to see a picture. Anyhow, I'll be checking the forums too, to see how other folks are mounting their jacks. It seems that most folks are using floor jacks, but I was thinking a bottle jack would work well too, but I don't see anyone using them. Do you have any idea why?

I have some tabs on the bacl of the chassis, where I set set something up. Not really sure if I want to add another spare tire, or just some type of tray to hold a tool kit and jack....

Bottle jacks take to many pumps to open.
Floor jacks are light in aluminum anyways and can come in auto lift where
with one pump they go up and reach the bottom of your car.
Or at least they have some with fewer pumps etc.

They have a larger base so the don't sink into dirt and sand and can have a flat plate bolted onto them to keep them from sinking more.

They are just the fastest easiest way to change a flat and safest with a bottle
they can slip or fall over easier.

Well cool good luck and I will see what I can do for a pick.
Check out Kartek they have a few different styles etc.

Is that the system that comes with there aluminum jack? Or do you have to provide the jack. Also how much is their system?

High lift jacks from offroad shops are pretty cool and you can find some nice lighter weight types and they can just be made to strap in our clamp on pretty simply. Our high lift just bunjies on with those small bunjies with the balls and hoop style. About 6 of them hold it into it's cradle.

smile.gif

Not sure if these will help but a couple pics.

It is just a cross bar with a mount that sticks upwards and holds your spare up off your motor and carb for me. Then you can either bolt the spare on or strap it on with a big tie down.
user posted image

Here it is off and you can just make out the stand sticking up without the spare on it.
user posted image

Here it is with the high lift. It is read and you can see it bunjied on.

I hadn't even thought of using a Highlift. Not a bad idea. Are you just hooking under the frame?

The DirtTech one pictured does not include the jack and costs $125. It's designed for a Craftsman aluminum jack. Kind of pricey.

Do they make the Highlift jack in aluminum? We have a steel one but they are kind of heavy. Oh well we'll cross that bridge when we get there. I ordered the springs yesterday, Just waiting for $$$ for the shocks. smile.gif

Mine is metal but it is pretty light weight.
You have to check it out. It was passed down from my brother in laws grandfather and he passed it to me for racing. Very cool and simple.
Wait tell you see it. Remind me to show you how cool this thing works and
how simple it is to use. Plus fast to use too.

thumbs_up.gif thumbs_up.gif

Cool about the springs. We will have to bring your car over and set it all up when you get the shocks.
We won't need the springs to do it but the shocks for sure.

Sweet moving right a long.
Good job.

Another nice thing about the high lift - you can use it as a winch when you get stuck in silt or sand. it ratchets together, just as easy as ratcheting apart. I've used mine to roll the racecar back over also.

I bought the high-lift brackets and welded them to the cage, but they just broke, so I bungie it just like Tut's.

Yeah I like them, and have used them for many things. I've used it to pulled out fence posts and stuff other than auto or offroading. I may see if they have an aluminum one though. But we'll use our steel one at first anyway.

Mine is really different than anyone I have ever seen as it is a screw drive.
It actually screws up or down. Really fast too.
Very strong and 3 feet of lift is awesome. Plus the weight is half as much as
the other high lifts of today I have seen. Make sure I show it to you guys
when you stop by next time.

Ya the high lift is ideal for racing especially for lower budget racing where we don't have chase crews in 4x4s just standing by to pull us out etc. The high lift can get you unstuck etc. Very cool.

Hey Tut, I am try to gather parts together so we can set up the suspension pretty soon. Even though we will not have the bypasses till later, we still want to be set up for them.

My question is what do you do for the bottom shock mount? Do you make your own, if so can you give me some dimension and I'll make some or which ones do you get? Chassis shop has some nice shock mounts but no dual shock mounts. I could just put individual ones on. Anyway let me know.

Also what steel / size should we bring when we do it?

Thanks again

You don't need to bring any metal I have what you need no worries.
wink.gif

As for tabs I used these by cutting a little off the back for the blue dual sport and they worked out nice.
http://www.pacificcustoms.com/AC750721.html

They do have individual tabs etc.
Whatever you prefer. Also check in mini buggy with Kludge he has some nice mounts that may work. They say they are for 1 1/4 tube but we may be able to open them up or he may be ablte to? for inch and a half tube?

The top search around and maybe find something cool you like if not the standard tabs work just fine. These.
http://www.pacificcustoms.com/AC750761.html

Also did you see this kit for mounting up a charlynn?
http://www.pacificcustoms.com/AC750810.html
That is really nice!

You might be able to use a couple of these for bottom mounts
http://www.pacificcustoms.com/AC750722.html

Without the bypass we will not be able to build the top mount as we need the coil over and bypass to bottom out at pretty much the same time. So having it is worth waiting for to do this. If not bring it by as a roller etc. later and we can add it.
At least this way you will be a roller and we can add the bypass mount later.
I am fine with you guys coming back by again whenever you like.

You and your dad are doing really top notch work and it shows.
I like the little brace you added on the single front tranny tabs... it is needed
and good call putting it on.

What did you end up doing for the front little tab?

I like the taller seat tabs good job.. man you are getting closer and closer.
Good work and I look forward to having you guys come over and lets finish making her a roller and get your shocks on!

Thanks we are try to do as best we can or know how. On the front tab I just left it for now as it makes putting the tranny in and out easy for 1 person. I must have had that thing in and out at least 10 times making sure everything was where I wanted it. Plus I put the 930 drive flanges on it as well, so we can measure for axles!!!!

Hope to go to Kartek and get the shocks on next Sat.
Then we get everything else that we need to come and visit you for a day of suspension stuff!!

Happy 4th everyone!!!

Hey Tut,

We are probably going to Kartek to get the shock next weekend, Do they come with a standard valving? or do we have to kinda spec them out? I know we can change them whenever, just curious about the initial valving.

anyway we are getting the foxes, I think they will be cheaper in the long run after we learn how to valve/rebuild them ourselves.

see ya!

Usually I have always just picked up the standard 60/40 with the fox shocks.

I don't know what mine are or I would let you know. sad.gif
They are from so long ago they were set up for a truck or something.
So I took a good amount of compression and some rebound out of the fronts.
The back are still the same I believe as the 60/40 and I just used my bypass to make final adjustments on them and all has been great.

I Look forward to working on it with you guys whenever you want.

You guys are totally welcome.
I enjoy hanging out with you and hope I was able to pass a little of what I have learned on to you..... before I forgot it all I am glad to share it with you. wink.gif

Hey no worries about helping out all day as you did the same for me by hanging out at my race all day and into the night chasing and coming to our rescue at the race so you are totally welcome! thumbs_up.gif
Plus thanks so much for giving me all those tabs.. that was really cool thank you.
wink.gif

Well I have a couple pics but I can not wait to see what you took and especially later when she is on all fours with the shocks on her and the Ultra Foxx shocks off of her ROFL.gif

Here is what I have.

Setting up the coil over shock with then new pre made shock brackets like what Kludge sales is really nice and they look great.
Here is the back shock:

user posted image

Clean simple and nice, I like them a lot.

We had to make up some of our own mounting and used tabs for the bypass shocks as they are much larger and have much larger ends and will not fit into the smaller shock brackets.

user posted image

(Oh and Jay check out the Mini Rhino in the pic!! sweet.. you so should have ridden in it.. ha ha.. laugh.gif )

Here is a photo from behind, please take note of how the coil over shaft and the bypass shaft are nearly perfectly in line with one another. This reduces wear, heat, shaft bending and makes for easy installation or removal of the shocks.

user posted image

Wheel travel in the back is just a hair over 17" inches with the bypass bottoming out first so it will control the ride of the car at all times.
That is real world usable wheel travel with 4.5" of ground clearance at full compression with a 30 inch tire.

On the front again the small nice pre made up shock brackets are the ticket.
They are clean, simple pre shaped and set up and really save time on your fab work and set up time for you. Totally worth getting some.
Plus again they look great. You can contact Kludge about buying some as he has them or the Chassis shop.

user posted image

One more

user posted image

Also take a look at how much smaller and lower this shock mounting set up is over my car. 1st off their car uses a 10" shock and so the entire upper mounting brackets are a total of 7" lower than "Kitt". I can not wait for the day when I have both time and money to switch over and re do her front.. this turned out very clean and simple.
Plus one single bar goes all the way across the car making the front shock mount very strong and really will make the car stable as one shock will push and transfer across the car to the other shock.
This set up is only 2.5" tall above the frame. Now that is impressive and El Diablo is talking about running the hood right over the mount which will look great I think.

Plus the most exciting news is this front set up has over 17" of wheel travel and with some minor clearancing will give them 18" of wheel travel!!
Very cool and that will really help to handle the bumps and get you out there racing and having fun! thumbs_up.gif

Here is a photo of just the front shock mounting system showing how clean, simple but actually very strong it turned out.

user posted image

Well that was a great day in the garage.
We managed to get all the shock mounts done and now El Diablo just has welding to do and finish working out the rack mounting with the shock mounts done he now knows what he needs to do to adjust his steering and tie rods.

Then it is just store bought items, time and money to finish up "Dusty" for the next race season.

Really great looking mini race car guys she is looking great.
I love all the extra double shear brackets and work you guys are doing to her.

Well if you ever need anything just let me know but I think you guys are pretty well set and just need time and the all mighty dollar or many to finish her up and be read for next season.

Send me all the questions you have and I will do my best to answer them.
We will meet up and do some testing pre running at any time you are ready.

Talk to you soon and look forward to seeing your pics.

Great job and that was quick.

Cool, we got the arms flipped around and things look good now. Also we got the front shock issue resolved and its now a roller!! So we had to throw the motor in it just to check it out

We are going to change some things on this motor so it will run cooler and better for racing and not just short trips in the dunes.
