Jackson sat in the courtyard, taking a breath since graduation day was coming up fast. After spending four years at the university, it was high time that scouts should start looking at him. He slung it to side of a bench as he slumped onto it. He rubbed his shoulders since his muscles were bothering him. He glared at the letter that was shaking in his hand.

“J. Jeremiah, my boy, it’s time again. I hope the university will allow you to take a week off to attend my wedding. Yes, I found love again. Her name is Yasmina and I believe you will like here. Your brothers have her doubts, but she will come around soon. I need you here to talk some sense into them. You understand, don’t you.

Sincerely,

P. William Chase III”

“Wow, a week, the bastard must miss me.” He crumbled up the paper and set it next to him. His father was getting married again, for the eight time. Did the seven times before not worn him enough? He’d met Yasmina before, she was about a couple of years older than him. His dad did like his wives young. Except Roni. He loved Roni, maybe even more than his own mother. He smiled when he began to think about her. She was probably the best stepmother he’d ever had and he was devastated when she died. He looked around at the students moving by him and gripped at his shoulder again. Was he even able to bare through his last classes? Finals were over and the last couple of days were just bull so they can use all the government money. He could miss it, but that was just more trouble he didn’t need to be in. He wished his life was better than this. That his parents, his real mother and father, just didn’t speak and slept in separate rooms instead of put him through hell, marriage after marriage. He’d never even heard from his mom since he was five. Was she dead? Hopefully, then that would give her an excuse for abandoning her child in need.

“Shit” he wore as he felt a sharp pain in his shoulder blade. He might need to go see a real doctor. Ever since his minor car accident, the doctors told him he'd be okay to play basketball. But they were university medics and well, the school would push him out onto court with one leg if they could. Anything to keep the top Div. 1 player in the game so it would make Hawaii look good. It only bothered him when he was stressed, like now.

Kayla was walking through park, taking her sweet time going to work. She hasn't been getting much sleep since Brooke and Jamie moved in with her, but she loved them both so she kept her mouth shut about it. Kayla did the housework after Brooke went out and Jamie was with his play dates, so by the time she had to be at work, she was already tired and wanting to crawl into bed. Being woken up at 7am by a five year old is never fun, especially when she usually doesn't wake up until around two in the afternoon.

She felt like just sitting down on the park bench and taking a nap, calling into work sick or something but she needed the money. Kayla was in her own thoughts as she walked along, her dad's birthday was coming up and it was her turn to go and visit him this year, she wasn't quite sure she wanted to. She was debating herself until she saw another person in the park. She had seen him around but didn't know his name.

"Hey." she said, flashing a friendly smile and then noticed his shoulder seemed to bothering him. "Are you okay?"

He was taken a little off guard by the voice that seemed to appear next to him, but he was relieved when he saw a girl sitting next to him. Good, he wasn’t going crazy yet. He noticed her looking at his shoulder and decided to put her mind at slight ease. ”I’m contemplating whether or not I got the first day med student when they were checking out my arm.” He said stretching it back as he cursed at the university. ”I swear, they’d probably put my corpse on a stick and force me to play basketball before they admit something is wrong with me.” He laughed to fill the void, since nowadays, all he really did was laugh, since thinking about the bad things in life just didn’t do him good. It was just so much to go on that if he didn’t look at things through rose colored glasses, he would survive.

He decided to counter the girl with equal friendliness, since she didn’t know who he really was and probably once she found out, she’d judge him like the rest of them. ” You seem a little familiar, have I seen you at the College or something? I doubt we have a class, unless you major in Business Management…. Or play on the Men’s Basketball team.” He raised a playful eyebrow to her as he loosened his shoulder blades a bit.

She laughed at his comments towards the University, mostly because they were true. "Nah, your corpse wouldn't fit on a stick, so they'd probably just toss you in the furnace for winter." Kayla had attended the university for just a few months after high school graduation but she had to leave since the money her dad left her for tuition ended up being used as bail money, not that it mattered since he was locked up again just three months later. The rest of the money, her brother used it on surfing lessons and equipment. She was usually the black sheep of the family but used to it by now.

"Um no, I mean I went for a few classes in psychology and law but I just couldn't finish it. Someday though. So you're the big basketball star on campus? I bet you love that."

She looked down, biting her lip and letting her blond hair fall in her face in little strands. She had it pulled back but it never stayed right since her hair was thinner than most girls. Kayla always wished she could have Brooke's hair since it was so pretty. When she looked back up at him, she was surprised that she wasn't feeling shy or nervous like she usually did when meeting a new someone.

Jackson let his eyes fall upon the people walking past them. He liked meeting new people, but Jack had the attention span of a hamster and well, add that up with the fact that shiny things amused him seemed to throw him off track. He turned back to the conversation to see her moving some stray hairs out of place. She had nice hair and it did entice him for a split second before he processed what she had said to him. Was he the big man on campus? He probably wasn’t, but he decided to call himself that just as a formality, just letting himself know how special he really was. A tactic his father taught him how to do.
” I don’t know how I feel about it. Sometimes it gets a little tiring.” Lie. He loved being the center of attention most times. ” It’s tiring as hell, too. Drafting is coming up and I have to be in top shape. But looks like Hawaii is trying to sabotage me. I don’t blame them. Since our team, when has Hawaii ever had a chance at Div. 1? Never. That’s how much.” He answered for her, since Jackson always had that problem. He could actually hold a conversation for three with only him talking, he learned that tactic from his father also.
”So what do you do know? I mean, like I said earlier, I think I’ve seen you around? You have a son, right? He questioned, instinctively looking down on her finger to see if there was a ring. Absent as he suspected.

She listened to every word he said, seeing right through him but she decided to let him go on talking. She found it quite charming how he could go on and on with his own conversation. "Yeah I'm not really into sports. I couldn't tell you the difference between a touchdown and a homerun. Kinda odd seeing how I grew up around my dad and older brother right?" she smiled and nodded to a few familiar faces walking by. They were probably wondering what was going on. First famous soccer star Brooke Bartels moves in with her, then she's seen chatting up singer Blake and now future basketball star Jackson. This wasn't Kayla's usual scene.

Noooo....I don't have a son. That little blond monster usually with me is my best friends' son, Jamie. I'm helping his parents out right now, they're going through some stuff. You've probably seen me waitressing at the cafe on the beach."

That‘s where he knew her from and if he were to go there again, he‘d put in a good word for her. A sigh if relief went across his face when he found out that it wasn’t her child she was with. That meant no other man baggage to go with any other drama.
”It’s funny that you say your a waitress.” He said, putting on a charming chuckle as he rotated the crumpled up pare in his hand. ”Because if I were to guess what job you were to have. Ironically, I would have chosen a waitress. “ He nodded his head and smiled to some passer bys who took a lingering look at the two of them. ”Looks like someone chose the right career path, eh?” he nudged her slightly and wiped a sweaty palm on his jeans.
”Hey, the next time I go there. I’ll leave you a nice tip, k? Just remind me. I mean, it‘s nice to see a smiling face when you’re enjoying your meal. ” He leaned back on the bench as he looked up at the late afternoon sky. It was nice to have a moment where he felt a small amount of peace in his life. But it was interrupted by the thought of his father’s wedding. He definitely was not looking forward to any kind of get together with him and he had half a mind not show up at all, but he couldn’t do that. He had to be the bigger person, which wasn’t so hard for him to do.
”So, strange woman who started talking to me for no reason. Obviously your not a fan, which is a shame, so who are you exactly? Do I not get a name or is this one of those magical chance meetings that you see in the movies where I fall madly in love and chase you halfway across the world only to find out that you’re engaged to my father.” He covered with a laugh, ”Which sadly, wouldn’t be all that believable.”

She was more than a little offended by his sudden attitude, how could he possibly stand there and act like he was better than her? True she's a waitress but she's more than just that, and she wouldn't even have to be a waitress if her own father hadn't royally screwed up everyone's life. She folded her arms across her chest as she narrowed her gaze to him, still not believing what she was hearing.

"Okay, so you could have guessed that I'm a waitress? Well let me tell you something, champ, there's more to me than that and just because you have the rich parents and sob story of 'daddy doesn't love me' doesn't make you any better than anyone else."

She looked him up and down, and shook her head and started passed him until she heard him mention knowing her name. Kayla turned around, adjusting her bag and said, "You aren't worthy of knowing my name. Don't expect decent service if you ever stop by the cafe." she rolled her eyes and walked on.

Kayla wouldn't admit to even herself, but his arrogance and attitude was intriguing. She could tell he wasn't really like that all the time but she allowed him to get to her just then.

Jackson was taken aback by her brutality, but it didn’t phase him. Surprisingly, this probably wasn’t the most outrageous reaction that he has ever gotten to his personality, but somewhere, deep down inside, he assumed that it affected him somehow. But this girl, her abrasiveness, it was interesting. She stood up in a huff and retreated in the direction she came from. It didn’t bother him much, he was alone to begin with and no one asked her to sit down, so her feelings were he own fault. But as he watched her walk away, and yes, he watched certain aspects of her as she walked away, it struck him that maybe she wasn’t a waste of his time. He grabbed his bag and stood up, slowly, but casually following her as she kept her back toward him. Wow, she was playing the bitch card. But he decided to counter it, since he had seen a few minutes of her sweet side.
”Come on, I’m only joking, you don’t have to be a bitch about it.” He said laughing as he followed in tow of her. He quickened his pace just a little to stand in front of her, blocking her way. She made several attempts to get past him, but he took his own basketball background into play and blocked her advances even more. ”I’m sure that if we get to know each other, we won’t have any more misunderstandings.” He cocked up and eyebrow and put on a smirk for her, trying to dish out the charm.

"and you don't have to be a total jackass but you are." she hollered after him, as she continued to walk away. He was really irritating her and it only got worse as he blocked her from getting around him. She felt like screaming and pushing him away from her but Kayla didn't, not yet anyways.

"So you call this a misunderstanding? Oh please let me know when you're being a first class jerk than, that way I can tell the difference. Being 'just a waitress' and all, it gets kind of difficult to know when people are being rude and when I just misunderstand them." she faked a smile, resting her hands on her hips as she awaited his response, hiding it very well that she was loving their banter.

”Well, I’m glad we’ve got everything cleared up then!” He said, cheerily challenging her tone with his own. He wasn’t the kind of person to start confrontation, but he always seemed to end up in them. He laughed to himself when she put her hands on her hips, it was kind of cute it a way. Like it was supposed to intimidate him or something. ”And I never said you were ‘just a waitress’” He countered back as he shrugged his shoulders. ”I just insinuated that you were a waitress and a single mother, the words JUST. A. WAITRESS. Never left my mouth.” He made air quotes with his hands, something he liked to do when he wanted to get his point across. ”See, it looks like one of us is just jumping to conclusions.” She lowered his tone to more of a sort of lecture manner, it was just interesting that he was going back in forth with her in that manner. ”So now that we’ve got that cleared up-” He said, taking out his PDA and fiddling with some buttons for a little while, ”I’m not free for a few days but wait, how about tonight at around 7:45p.m.ish? I think I can move somethings over and I’d be good to go. How about you?” He said, looking up at her and moving a stray hair from out of his forehead. He waited for a minute before growing slightly impatient. ”So I notice you’re not checking your PDA…or phone…or anything….” he gestured to her hands, which were empty, waiting for a reply.

They had just met and he already knew how to press all her major buttons, he was annoying her and all she wanted to do right now was just get as far away from him as possible. She stood there, ignoring everything else he was saying but she made it appear she was listening. Kayla scoffed and rolled her eyes when he pulled out his phone and told her when he was free. Like she even cared.

"If I checked my phone then that would give you the impression I'm interested in you." she said, tilting her head to the side as she watched him. Jackson is the typical guy that Kayla couldn't stand but something about him was making her not dislike him so much.

He stood there for a moment, since the situation was foreign to him. Yeah, he‘d probably had a hard time getting some girls, but they would have already caved in by now. ”I don‘t think I‘m understanding.” He said, clearing out his ears just to see if there was something wrong with his hearing or something like that. ” So you‘re saying you‘re not interested in me? Well, I have to say I‘m quite surprised. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.” He held her icy gaze and for a moment, watching her movements as she gave out the persona that she really didn‘t want to be there. It took him a little off guard, but he was determined to recover. ”Well, that‘s a shame, because the more you resist me, the more annoying I tend to get. He offered a smile, which was returned by more iciness. ”I hope you can live with that? He stepped a little closer to her.

"You can't get much more annoying than you are now." she said, giving him half a smile. Kayla had two choices, she could either blow him off and continue to get bothered by him or she could just cave in and give him one night out.

"but tell you what, if I go out somewhere with you once, and I do mean only once, then you have to leave me alone. Unless it goes well, then you have to do something for me."

She smirked at him, already having a few ideas going through her head about him.

He shook his head, he knew deep down inside he still had a little something. "Aww, see, I knew you were interested. And I can make that promise for you. If you don't have fun with me, or at least fall madly in love, I'll turn my back and walk away." He smiled to her as her as an idea popped in his head. "How about this, you-" He took her hand and sat her down on the bench, "Wait here, we can get this done with right now. Give me 20 minutes." he left his bag as a sign that he was going to come back and walked away. A few feet gone, he turned back, his hands clasped together. "Don't move." he turned in the opposite direction.
