Kayla was cleaning off a few tables before the lunch rush came in, she had about half an hour before the crazy crowds came in demanding their orders and then complaining about the slow service. It's not her fault she was the only waitress. She had finally talked the manager into placing a "Now Hiring" sign in the window just a few days ago but no applicants yet. To make things worse, she had also told Brooke and Landon that she would watch Jamie while they went shopping. So now she had a four year old boy following her around, at least it was an extra pair of hands.

Kayla was kneeling over in a booth, having Jamie hand her the silverware wrapped in napkins so she could get the tables ready. Kayla hated her job but it paid the bills.

Sorry we're not open quite yet. she said, hearing someone walking in, she turned to see who it was. "Oh, nevermind, hey, Em. What's going on?" Kayla picked up the tray from Jamie and walked behind the counter, after helping him up onto the barstool in front of her. If you behave then I'll give you an ice cone on the house. she said, playfully pointing her finger at him when he acted like he was going to jump out of the chair.

"Hey," Emily said brushing black hair out of her face she put her skateboard against the counter and took a seat next to the kid, "Who's this?" she said pinching on of his cheeks. He made sounds in protest so she let go and scooting away a little. She's never been good with kids. "I see your a little shorthanded. I could help if you want." She said bouncing in her chair.

"I had a waitressing job once. Quit though. Guys got a little too touchy for my taste." She added with a careless laugh.

That little monster would be the demon child of Brooke and Landon Myers." she said, sharing a funny face with Jamie. She loved the kid to death but he could drive her insane very quickly. Kayla and Brooke had always been good friends, but then she got famous and married Landon. Kayla didn't care for him too much.

"If you want to help out that would great, but I don't want you to do it if you don't want to. We're just really packed during lunch hours and I'm the only waitress. My brother was helping out but he can't stay out of the water long enough anymore." she sighed, and gave Emily a cute pouty face, obviously trying to guilt her into helping out.

Emily laughed, "Really? I think I'll just head down to the skate park and probably hurt myself. Of course I'll help you." She said jumping out of her chair scooping up her skateboard, and he counter taking off her hat too. "Unless you want me to skate around a serve people--where do you want me to put these?" she said sarcastically.

"This should be loads of fun." she said with a sigh, Most people looked at her funny because she was shorter then most 18 year olds. She is only 5'2. But most of the time she doesnt really care.

"Great! Thank you soooo much!" she beamed with excitement, tossing her an apron from under the counter. Kayla took her board and her hat and sat them in the back room by the kitchen. When she came back out, Kayla handed her a brand new book and pencil to take orders on, she was just thankful for the help. "I'll totally make this up to you somehow. I promise." Kayla quickly gave Emily a grateful hug but her expression changed when she looked out and saw how busy the beach was getting. She just hoped Brooke came by soon to get Jamie.

Emily laughed and hugged her back, but quickly let go. Taking the paper and pencil she walked around and climbed onto the counter, "So when dose the 'lunch' start?" she asked watching the beach, too many people. The was the problem with hawaii, too many tourists. They got really annoying after a while.

She sighed and turned back to Kayla "So what's up?"

The 'lunch' thing starts in about fifteen minutes. he groaned, not really feeling up to all this today. Kayla walked around, redoing her hair and joined Emily at the counter. Not much really. Working, paying bills, the usual. How about you and the whole skating thing?

"I haven't broken a bone in a month." She said proudly. It was a real personal record. Emily grinned at Kayla and looked at the little boy. "So the Myers can't get a nanny?" She asked with a laugh, they were, like, Gajillionaire. It didn't make all that much sense. Of course if they were protective and didn't trust other people..

"15 minutes is kinda a long time. What do you want to so until the rush?" She asked swinging her legs. "Oh!" She remembered something "I learned a new trick!"

"Well that's impressive. If I tried skating I'm sure I'd be in a full body cast within an hour." she said, also turning to see Jamie. He was playing with some of his toy cars on top of the counter. "They could, but it's just easier to leave him with me. He enjoys the free ice cream." she said, ruffling his blond hair a bit and looking back to Emily.

"I usually just hang out by myself, but now I have you to bother." she playfully pushed Emily.

"And you do a good job of it." She joked back softly punching her in the arm. "A full body cast, eh?" she looked thoughtful, "Maybe, or just most of it." She said with a sly grin. She glanced out onto the beach, it was a normal beautiful day, Clear blue waters, tan people surfing them. Sometimes it made her feel out of place. She lived there her whole life--but was really pale. Emily thinks that she's part albino or something.

"So have you learned any new tricks?" She said then added "--Er--anything new?"

"Learned anything new?...hmmmm..." she paused to think. Kayla hadn't really learned anything since she graduated from high school. At least she didn't think she had. "Oh I did learn that if overfill the dishwasher it'll break and then I''m left with a nice little bubbly mess to clean up." she said, recalling what had happened the other day. She was usually doing things like that.

"I didn't know that. I'll keep it in mind.." she said absently, when was the last time she washed dishes? Emily couldn't remember. Last year? Or last semester? Snapping out of her own thoughts Emily looked up at Kayla with a sheepish grin. It was like her to daydream, and even imagine things. But it was rude to t=do that when people were talking to you.

"Sorry about that.." she said "So how many more minutes now?"

"Not many, look..." she pointed out to the beach area where a few people were walking towards the cafe. Oh the dreaded work day, at least for now she had Emily's help. "I wish Brooke would hurry and come get Jamie," she said softly under her breath. Things always got hectic around lunch time and Kayla wouldn't be able to pay attention to James the way it was needed.

"Could we put it somewhere so it doesnt get stolen?" she asked as if talking about a scooter instead of a child. But she never had a younger sibling, so she doesn't know how to deal with one. She followed kayla's gaze and sighed. "Now I remember why I quit..." She wasn't a very good peoples person. But she put on her best smile and looked at Kayla helplessly.

"Well, Time to open up." she grimaced running her pale fingers though her hair.

When she said 'it' Kayla thought she was talking about something else then saw her pointing to Jamie. It made her laugh how Emily seemed so uncomfortable around little kids, Jamie was four, going on five, years old, and usually people adored him since he acted much older than he was.

"Oh he'll be fine. He has his toys and coloring books. Brooke or Landon one will be by soon to get him so it's okay." she assured her. Besides, Jamie was good at charming at the customers and getting Kayla good tips.

She got off the counter, flipping the "CLOSED" sign around to "OPEN" and then unlocked the doors, backing away as people started coming in. Kayla made her way back to the counter, whispering to Emily, "Looks like it's your showtime." as she began handing out menus.
