Recently I picked up playing Magic the Gathering again (thanks Tony and Ken).

However, in an attempt to keep myself from (yet again) becoming disappointed again with MTG I offer the following blog:

Goal: To build a winning, Constructed deck in 1 years time according the following rules.

- I will use no cards that I already own.
- I will only use cards I have drafted, traded for, or bought using money I earned from selling new cards I have collected starting on 9/12/09.
- I will only play in Drafts at U G and G (no pressure ken)
- I will only make trades for cards at U G and G.
- I will be extremely nice to people, except those who are unkind to others.
- I will report how this went on 9/12/10

Why on gods green earth would I do something this silly you ask?

1. To help U G and G build a thriving Magic community similar to the other communities they have built.

2. When I started playing MTG 15 years ago, it was with the concept that your skills as a player and collector (sans money) would earn you the right to be a winner.

3. Because Magic was never supposed to be about a bunch of rejected internet trolls with too much money and time on their hands, buying up and playing the latest trend deck. That is why people quit, that is what I am against.

And so here goes something (I hope).

Day 1 (9/12/09)

Drafts Played in: 1
Drafts Won: 1
Current Constructed Deck Colors: Green, Blue, White
Current Constructed Deck Win/Loss Record: 0 Wins 0 Losses

Requested Rules for Posting on this thread:

If you don't like what I have to say, just don't read anymore. Don't waste my time or others time junking up this thread with inane disagreements and insults. grinning-smiley-003.gif

Day 16 (9/28/09)

Drafts Played in: 1
Drafts Won: 1
Current Constructed Deck Colors: Green, Blue, White
Current Constructed Deck Win/Loss Record: 0 Wins 0 Losses

Slow Start.

In an attempt to gather an additional player for the store, I fractured one rule slightly... but got guaranteed participation from the player that he will be at the next draft. We traded early, only because he didn't want to drag commons to the next tournament.

Trades this week:

1 Common (I forgot what) and 1 Goblin Token

For

1 Divination and 1 Rampant Growth

1 Behemoth Sledge and 1 Skill Borrower

For

1 Oblivion Ring, 2 Mind Spring, 3 Cancel

What I learned:

Recently one of the magic players did something truly awesome. He gave away a pack that he won, to the 2nd place player so that they both earned a prize for the tourney. KUDOS to being awesome!

Also, after 15 years of off and on, I forgot how much fun it is to trade for commons when you are first starting out and have no money/cards. This project was a good idea so far. smile.gif

2 Things:

1. I had no idea anyone was reading! COOL!

2. Ken's next tournament is wednesday, full report including trades to follow!

In the meantime, I am working on getting the magic players to actually get on these boards by telling them everytime i see them to get on these boards.

So far, no takers, but its only a matter of time!

Especially when I promise to make them famous!

RULES INFRACTION ALERT!!!!

Due to the lack of scheduled tourney's at UGG, I am playing in a draft tomorrow outside the store.

While I am hoping to make these sorts of events rare, I still need to bring in my own share of cards to make the store card library better!

Plus, I am hoping this will motivate a certain store owner to make me spend money IN HIS STORE!!!!!

Good luck to me!

this is the kid you traded for the golblin token with (Austin). I had no idea you "project" was as intense as all this (not in a bad way). It might be a slow start for the grayslake area magic community, but I was hoping we could start gettin people to show up for pick-up-games and trade nights (when time is available at Ug&g). since you gots more sway with the powers that be, pehaps you could set such a thing up. (It doesn't need to be a tourny to be fun)

Day 29 (10/11/09)

Number 1, its WAYY colder than it should be.

Number 2, I received 0 cards that are usable in my deck, and only one with any real trade value, so I guess my rules infraction is INCREDIBLY minor.

Drafts Played in: 1
Drafts Won: 1
Current Constructed Deck Colors: Green, Blue, White
Current Constructed Deck Win/Loss Record: 0 Wins 0 Losses

I did very well at the Sealed Deck Pro Qualifier over the weekend. I also reminded myself why its important that I stick to helping the community at UGG work well. The general magic community is still filled with oversensitive jerks (family board, can't say what I really want to).

My 2nd Draft is wednesday. Can't wait.

I may have playtested my constructed deck, and I have a little way to go before victory is possible. 11 months remain to make this a good one.

Cool note of the day, Ken is working hard to get magic players some time to play, and plenty of tournaments to play in. grinning-smiley-003.gif

Which is why he is our gaming community guiding light, and apparently one of the powers that be. biggrin.gif

Day 41 (10/23/09)

So I had forgotten what it was like to get repeatedly owned because my deck is terrible. Until tonite that is.

Austin's crew took turns beating me senseless. But they also learned things!

Like who Richard Garfield is!

I got sick before the last draft so I am looking forward to November 1st!

Drafts Played in: 1
Drafts Won: 1
Current Constructed Deck Colors: Green, Blue, White
Current Constructed Deck Win/Loss Record: 1 Win 3 Losses

Quick notes:

Kenny has some dominating stuff, I am looking forward to him fleshing it out and making it great.

Austin and Maria both rolled me with WAY more creatures than I am used to seeing.

And Chris just learned how to use his deck efficently, effectively, and possibly in a dominating manner.

All in all a good night.

Trades:

1 Mask of Riddles

For

1 Oblivion Ring
2 Winged Coatl
1 Tome Scour

1 Siege Gang Commander
1 Goblin Shortcutter
1 Goblin Runeblaster
1 Nissa's Chosen
1 Primal Below

For

1 Lorescale Coatl
2 Naturalize
1 Rampant Growth
1 Silence
1 Oblivion Ring

That concludes this one, next update after the 11/1/09 Draft Tourney of the Ages!

I hate to see how its gonna look at the end of a year (still can't belive the effect of 4 Oblivion rings has on your Deck). Like i said Good luck and let me know if theres certain cards your looking for, if i find them ill be happy to trade.

Day 55 (11/5/09)

Sorry not to post right after the tourney, alot going on recently.

Drafting was lots of fun, and additional people showed up so we had a fun turnout!

Also, its time to try a different deck type. Without access to the right cards, I am going to work on something a little less difficult to start with.

Drafts Played in: 1
Drafts Won: 2
Current Constructed Deck Colors: Red
Current Constructed Deck Win/Loss Record: 0 Win 0 Losses

Quick Notes:

- We actually have three female magic players, which is an oddly high amount.

- Kenny may be one of the coolest guys, that also wins alot, that I have met. It always warms my heart to see someone being extra nice at tournaments.

- Next time I am around at an open gaming night, I intend to buy three packs so I can show everyone who wants them, some tips on winning draft strategies.

- I am not keeping track of trades on here going forward. Trading has started to get fast and furious, so its a litle difficult to write everything down.

11/22/09 - I declare to be Draftastic day 2K9!

Day 72 (11/22/09)

So another draft in the books, and one to follow closely thereafter!

Drafts Played in: 3
Drafts Won: 1
Current Constructed Deck Colors: Red
Current Constructed Deck Win/Loss Record: 5 Win 1 Losses

Quick Notes:

- Kenny Rolls us, but with dignity yet again!

- Odd to do a draft with only four people, especially when none of us drafted anything good......

- The trading is getting good, and now that the pool of cards for the store has improved, I can see the constructed decks getting better already!

- I cannot wait to see all three of the Blue/Black decks that are being built, as I love seeing the different strategies everyone has on similar concepts.

- Good Samaritan act of the day: I set up one of our young men with card sleeves, so that all of his cards will still be mint condition when he is ready to put his kids through college. grinning-smiley-003.gif

- A couple of months, and my second deck type is working, side note: its almost time for us to have our first Constructed tournament!

- We need a way to expand the community. Which means people need to tell people that we are cool and fun to hang out with....

11/28/09 - Next draft, I will have to see if I make it!

Day 81 (12/1/09)

Another draft gone by oh how time flies!

Drafts Played in: 4
Drafts Won: 2
Current Constructed Deck Colors: Red
Current Constructed Deck Win/Loss Record: 6 Wins 1 Losses

Quick Notes:

- Mike finished second, and had a great draft! I cannot wait until we get everyone in the store who plays all at the same tourney!

- I got nothing else....wow great blog post!

Day 96 (12/16/09)

And now our first constructed tournament is in the books!

It was a fun one even if my brother did knock my block off....

Drafts Played in: 4
Drafts Won: 2
Constructed Tournaments played in: 1
Constructed Tournaments Won: 0
Current Constructed Deck Colors: Red
Current Constructed Deck Win/Loss Record: 12 Wins 5 Losses

Quick Notes:

- We picked up a new player named Chris, who played an extremely interesting combination of Allies. I love seeing out of the box thinking in deck design.

- Kenny is going to murder all of us during the next tournament, just to prove this last one was a fluke.

- Working up a new deck type, but definitely not ready to unveil it quite yet (its getting closer though).

- Glad to see everyone is getting a good card library built up so that we can work on building better and stronger decks for our tournaments. I am looking forward to playing a few decks I have absolutely no chance against!

- We actually have a girl that comes out consistently to tournaments, and she isn't bad at this game (for those unfamiliar, that's not a normal thing). Looking forward to seeing added trades and participation from her, especially when one day she smokes everyone and cackles madly at our distinct inability to play MTG.

Day 107 (12/27/09)

2 Constructed tournaments down, one heck of a match for first place.

Which I watched from the sidelines, cause my deck was BAD!

Drafts Played in: 4
Drafts Won: 2
Constructed Tournaments played in: 2
Constructed Tournaments Won: 0
Current Constructed Deck Colors: Blue/Black
Current Constructed Deck Win/Loss Record: 3 Wins 4 Losses

- Decided to put the red deck on temporary hiatus to try a blue black discard deck. We will see if it goes the distance when I finally finish assembling it.

- Kenny wins his first constructed tournament. Mike builds his first real deck. Austin lays the wood to a few people. Maria's deck has now improved. The community is catching up.

- Worldwake is coming.

- Looking forward to the UGG ULTIMATE MAGIC DAY in which there could be as many as THREE tournaments in one day. Oh the glory. Oh the Pomp. Oh the Circumstance.
