I don't know, you'd have to check with Dell. You might be able to find a manufacturer/model name for the Bluetooth chip they use, then get it from elsewhere.

Could well be. Replacing the CPU would certainly void the warranty where RAM and BT shouldn't if there's provision for upgrading/installing those.

Will most BT modules be compatible or will I have to buy a specialised one?

As for the processor; it's a 1.8ghz dual core which is as powerful as my desktop but it'll probably need updating eventually. I have suspicions that with a laptop it would be soldered on.

Bluetooth should be easy if they've left you a specific space for a Bluetooth module, you just connect it in like the RAM (with the Latitude XT, you unscrew a small panel on the back and they've labelled up several sections where you can stick DIMM B -> RAM and WWAN and BT -> Bluetooth). Processor would be harder, I haven't tried that with a laptop yet.

I work with a travel company that has an office in London, they have between 300/400 people there, mostly with PCs, but about 40 odd tablet laptops and a few standard laptops too most of which is Dell or Lenovo equipment at the moment.

I'm okay with RAM. I've never done it on a laptop before but I watched a video explaining how to do it and it seemed simple enough. (I think my laptop will be one with RAM under the keyboard.)

I'm more concerned about installing bluetooth modules and maybe even a better processor. I'll definitely be breaking seals for that. Though by the time I do so the warranty will have expired anyway.

Where do you work Chat?
Darzog Posted on Aug 7 2009, 11:45 AM
Don't break the seal, you'll be peeing every five minutes!!!

I was always under the impression that opening the case broke the seal. Obviously Chat would know better than I would, so if he says go for it, then you have your marching orders, young man.

Shouldn't be that bad, I upgrade Dell computers and laptops pretty often at work. Usually, the laptops either have one slot in the back for RAM, which will already in there, or they'll have a hard to get to slot behind the keyboard and an easy one to get to one on the back (which would be empty). Depends exactly what model of Inspiron you have though, and how old the model is.

As for breaking the seal for warranty, that depends where the seal is. I never have to break any seals to replace RAM.

I thought breaking the seal voided the warranty. I was planning on upgrading anyway. There's an option of putting a bluetooth ship in but I can't afford that at the moment so I'm hoping it'll go in later.

It's a Dell Inspiron. Are they easy to upgrade? Dell seems like the kind of company that doesn't want you fiddling the with the hardware they give you.

Or just keep the old RAM somewhere and replace it if you need to use the warranty. tongue.gif

  VOID THE WARRANTY!!!!!!

Order some more RAM, then. It's cheap enough, even for laptops. Easy to install too. winking0072.gif
