The journey to the living corner had been quiet. There weren't many people on the streets at that time of night, and it seemed any potential conversation between the two would run dry quickly, so neither even bothered to start one. The only person they ran into was an old homeless begger, one who Aydin had become rather familiar with after seeing him so many times. On a number of occasions Aydin had offered that the man spend the night in Aydin's apartment but was always turned down, so the young scientist always had to just settle on offering money. This always made the begger very happy. It was a quick stop. Aydin dug into his wallet and dropped twenty mars dollars in the old man's hand, that being the only cash he had in his wallet. Who was to say if the homeless man was really homeless, or just someone who wanted some easy money from a sucker . . . but either way, Aydin gave what he had, knowing that he was helping at least someone. After the short delay, he quickly apologized to Qinna and continued to lead her to apartment building #4.
When they arrived he went to the elevator and went to the second floor. Usually, Aydin prefered taking the stairs, but with his leg hurting, he didn't want to use it any more than he had to. He walked along in front of the doors and stopped in front of the one that said 28. "Here we are," he said, flashing a slight smile in Qinna's direction. He flipped open the pad that was at the side of the door and placed his thumb on the scanner. It scanned his thumb and then with a quiet "bee-beep!" the door unlocked. He flipped the pad shut and then pushed open the door for Qinna. When he stepped in, the lights automatically turned on. Inside was a small kitchen and then facing the window, across the room was a couch in the living space, along with a lounge chair beside it. Against the wall was a desk and a computer, while against the other wall was a bookshelf. The place was fairly clean, thanks to Aydin's insistence on cleanliness, and the fact that neither of the men that lived there were really there all that often.
The east side of the apartment held a door that led to the bedroom, which had two single beds in it, while on the west side was a door that led to the small bathroom. It was true that Aydin's apartment wasn't big or expensive, but he really couldn't have expected to get anything better. Aydin had spent a fortune on the lab, and was still paying it off. He couldn't spend more money than he had to on an apartment. Aydin had only gotten something bigger than a studio apartment because his younger brother, Robin, was staying with him and helping him pay for it. "Welcome home," he said with a small chuckle.
