What, my friends, are your favorite books? List them, lists galore!! And tell us why. Why should I read the Thief by whats'ername that wrote something about Atolia or something like that? Post away!

Hmm...my favorite books...
The Icarus Hunt, by Timothy Zahn. Why? *bangs head on wall trying to think of a good answer* Well-written, exciting, with a lot of mystery. The Squire's Tales series (I think that's what they're called...) by Gerald Morris. Funny, enjoyable, clean, and I just love them. There are others, too, but I don't want to sit down and compile a list, complete with reasons, right now. |

Top of my list....
The Thief (and all that come after it) These three books are skillfully crafted with an ingenious hero that is stuff of legends and at the same time quite human. The author definitely knows what she's doing and she drops the subtlest of hints before blowing you off your feet in the end. I truly admire her work and I think you should read them Chi cause I think you'd appreciate them. Howl's Moving Castle My name’s sake book. The Bloody Jack Adventures: Bloody Jack The Curse of the Blue Tattoo Under the Jolly Roger Hilarious books, these. Written in first person and the main character is totally believable, infuriating and likeable. They're a good bit of ink and paper and I recommend them. I don't know about you boys but I'm sure all you girls will find them interesting. But read them anyway, Anar and Chi. Mm... I'll think of more later. |

I read The Thief. It was good, but not terribly impressive. I plan on reading the others, Anar says they get better, but seriously, I can't on my life see why it's getting all these raves. Fritz Leiber writes more interesting characters.

Wow, somebody on this forum has even heard of LE Modesitt Jr. person, much less reads him? And they're familiar with Elizabeth Moon's good work? Now all I need is for somebody to start drooling when I mention Glen Cook or Gene Wolfe...

Yes, I just started reading Modesitt a year ago. At first I was a bit put off by his style and his obsessive attention to characters' craft/jobs...but I've grown to love his books. I've read all the Recluce books now, and can't wait for the new one in the fall...and only have two more in the Spellsong cycle. I have the first book in the Corian Chronicles...but haven't read it yet. I really really liked Deeds of P. It was very good. I haven't read anything else by Elizabeth Moon...and what you say makes me aprehensive... Sorry...but I haven't heard of Glen Cook or Gene Wolfe...though I will look into them! |

Ha, my list...in a complete form. Sorta
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card. VERY good book. I really don't know how to decribe it...twists and stuff... HP - J.K. Rowling The Two Princesses of Bamarre - Gail Carson Levine. Another god, failry original book with a nice, bittersweet twist at the end. Echohawk - Lynda Durrant. Haven't read it in a while, but it IS a good book. There's a sequel...which is not as good. Fearless series - Francine Pascal. Another VERY good book/series. Kept my attention through all 31 of them. The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini. Very good book. Graphic, haunting, sad, idk, good. Dragon Rider - Cornelia Funke. Hm...I've noticed I'm not good at describing things...one of my favorites. The Seeing Stone - Kevin Crossley-Holland. Another one, Arthur and Excalibur... Thoroughbred series - Joanna Campbell. I like horses...good series. Indian Captive (The Story of Mary Jemison) - Lois Lenski. Alas...I just really like it. Where The Sidewalk Ends - Shel Silverstein. I jsut like Shel. WtSE is MUCH better than Light in the Attick. But I might be biased, my grandma used to read me WtSE The Thorne Twins series - Dayle Courtney. I still need to get a hold of the other books. Mysteries with a message, without seeming preachy. Frank Peretti's Cooper Kids series. I like them. Crispin: The Cross of Lead - Avi. Haven't read that one in a really long time, but I recall really, really liking it. I'm supposed to be getting some more in from the library soonish...so this is subject to change... (all my library books are recommendations) |
