EVERYBODY! ON AUGUST 27th...

Mars is going to be the closest it's ever been to the earth on August 27th, around 9:30 pm in the western time zone. It will appear to be about the size of the moon. In case anybody is interested, make sure you set your calenders for August 27th and watch about that time or you may miss it!!!

Also, nobody that is alive right now will ever see it this close again so don't miss it.

I remeber something like this happening several years ago. And they said that it wouldn't be that close again for another hundred years. So how the heck can it be happening again this year?

This is quite a notorious little rumour that pops up this time every year, since 2003, when this actually was the case. After following it up (I love all this space stuff), I read that the closest Mars will be this year will be around the December 18th mark, where it will still not be as close as it was in '03, when even then it was far from being the size of the Moon, instead being 144 times the distance of the moon. A telescope is still needed, as it only looks like a large red star.

Yes there is an email that goes around every year saying basically the same thing. Personally I asked my friend and he said that mars was going to be closest this year on august 27. This email is only someone telling a joke. There's no real truth to it. Besides if you look at mars in the sky it's still very far away. I doubt it can be as big as the moon in 14 days.

Wait December 18th DK? Ah, well I think mine makes a bit more sense but I've never cared for logic.

It's fake. It already happened a couple years ago, and it isn't going to happen again for another 15 years. It's a hoax.

I honestly don't understand what all the hype about planet sightings is. It's not as if you can really see much about the planet's surface from this distance, and the surface is the only thing that I find remotely interesting. I can honestly say that I have no desire to see a small red dot in the sky.

I've always been more of a Life Science person, anyway.

I didn't really look up anything about this I was just spreading the word because somebody told me about this. Anyways whether it's a hoax or not this is what I've heard.

If I could, I would lock this thread. This is clearly fake and clearly was recognized a few years back that something like this wouldn't happen again for many decades.
