I just got done with "The Sons of Dorn" and I'm kind of torn.
I was really looking forward to reading this book, as I've enjoyed the HH series very much and most of the Space Wolf and Ultramarine stuff.
As a pure brain candy/easy read, it was okay. If you didn't know much about the Fists or space marines then it was a good easy read. It kind of guided you through a short history of the marines and how they recruit. The descriptiveness of the book was lacking though and unless you've had alot of fluff under your belt you might not understand some of the descriptions that were in there.
If on the other hand you are looking for a sci-fi space combat/ indepth Imperial Fist/ twisting plot type of read then get something else. The book had the standby characters of the Fists along with one from an old codex (not space marine codex). The point of view of the initial processing of neophytes was interesting, however I thought in the fluff/old fluff that ties to the home world were mind wiped from the aspirants. As it was the "tension" between the aspirants was rather "blah" and didn't really seem to go anywhere.
The battle scenes and descriptions were rather lack luster and didn't really help the story much. You didn't have to be a great tactician to see what was going to happen next, and the ending of the main battle was a rather large let down, predictable but a let down.
So, if you have to have everything that's in IF yellow get the book, if want a good read then I wouldn't bother.

I agree with you the book was ok nowhere near the Heresy books, the prequel in Heroes of the Space Marines was a much better story but this was a more in depth book than a short story.

Ah, thanks for the info. I'll still get it though, to be able to judge for myself. It's always worth owning an IF book . one that rarely passes by.

While searching the blogs I check daily I found something pretty cool on Kantor Base blog by the Hammer from Chicago, IL A good image of how large the book is and he states that the fold out map is nice also.

Book Review TimeSPOILERS CONTAINED INSIDE but the story is known Ok I have not Finished Rynn's World just yet (little over a 100 pages left of the 535 pages) so far so good with some little issues Bad -spelling Errors -Captain Cortez is in the book ( He is supposed to be listed as missing pre Rynn's World diaster) -map is 3 pages and do not fold out but they are ok could have been better are in color unlike the HH maps. Good -Kantor is awesome and you feel his dispare over the losses -Sgt Grimm -The viewpoint of the Rynnites (Humans at Rynn's World) toward the CF and the CF viewpoints of them. Great example of Dorn himself Full Review upon completion of book

In response to the spelling and grammatical errors, after going through my HH books recently, and paying more attention to these parts, I noticed a few . How do the maps look like? Are they like the ones from FW on the Siege of Vraks?
