If you want gaming, then its best to go with nVidia as they have a better shader than ATI (I think).

Dual graphics cards are available with nVidia now but I dont see any point in going for duals, as my friend has dual 6800 ultras and its just a framerate increase from 80 to 130, and your eyes dont really need anything above 40. So its just a waste of cash and youd probably have to buy a new £100 power supply to feed the hungry PC...

Im an ATI man myself as I got a X700 pro on ebay for £60 a few months back and its ok for me... but if people have alot of money to blow, then wait until the X950 series is out (in a few months I think). That will blow nVidia out of the water concerning single graphics cards.

My opinion is ATI are better for HL2 and its mods.

Having said that I have a nVidia GeForce FX5200, and everyone I know uses nVidia chipsets.

I have always had nVidia, from Ti4200 to fx5900 modded to a 5950 Ultra, then a 6800LE unlocked and volt modded to Ultra and finally the one in at the moment is a 6800GT 256MB which I have again modded :D

I shall stick with nVid purely cause I can mod and clock the arse out of them and they dont die on me as a result of doing so. I have had ATi but they couldnt handle the abuse so well.

OK, so I am not the average user....

I think the basic truth is that within each price bracket, both nVidia and ATi make a great card that is more than adequate for gaming.

It is a bit like the Intel v AMD debate, I have both systems, 2 Intel and 2 AMD, one of each is clocked, and all are stable. All run the same stuff and do it well. To me it makes no difference which I use... but then life would be boring if we were all the same eh! :ph43r:

i personally like ati more although im using nvidia fx5200 at the mo but hopefully my x850 should arrive today

anyways, i have a mate hu runs a 6800 ultra i think and one of the functions on it is shite (cant remember which one) but u cant see water, it is just not there on screen and i think the smoke is screwed up too because the card cant handle the anti aliasing or something like that but everything else is top quality

(the water thing can be helpful though cos u can see people underwater wen other people cant)

wow this is an old thread, I was in it like 10 - 11 months ago lol.

wel i hav an ati x850 n its fine for me.

although i think it overheats my entire computer.

N even then on sum games the graphics rnt great but i rekon thts cos i hav a shite processor compared to the graphics card.

I def prefer this ati acrd over my nvidia one i had.

Personally, it is Nvidia, for several reasons

First of all I feel that you get more bang for your buck and are more reliable. Next, the drivers actually work, ATI produce good cards, but the drivers are what screws them over.

Next ATI will work better with HL2 because apparently some research has been done and results concluded that the programming was biased towards ATI, personally I think this is bulls.

Currently running a nVidia XFX 6600GT (overclocked)

AT the end of the day, I've never had any problems with it and works perfectly fine and never let me down.

This argument has been going around for a long time and the conclusion is that they both produce good chipsets but are constantly revelling with first place. nVidia hold the prize for dual graphic cards and with the release of the 7900GTX 512, thrown them into first with single cards as well. nVidia for gaming and ATI for more production.

At the end of the day it is up to you, each company has its own benefits and downfalls.

I used to play on a nvidia 5200 256mb for a long time and I often don't notice much difference between that and my x850 apart frm wen turning the graphics features up high.

Even with this card when i turn up the features up too much it screws the game over so I'm hoping its the fact I have an ok grpahics card and crap everything else rather thn the graphics card.

erm not really m8 theres not much difference in the cards.

at the lan a mate of mine had a 1Gb 2900XT ATI we both did the cs stress test and he only got 4fps more than i did.

i have a 8800GTS BFG 640Mb.

his res was something like 1440x900 and mine is 1680x1050 so really nvidia ftw

when you upgrade get a good intel chip as they far put perform any AMD chip at the min and plus intel and nvidia have teamed up so better performance as well.
