Richard, you have me so beat both in hardware and software that beating you to the gloat is about all I have right now...

Yeah, but that's just because of money. I don't have to worry about things like cars right now. I don't mind if you get the gloat anyway. I've been around the "My OS is better than yours, so that makes me a smarter person, whatever, blah, blah, woof, woof" WAY too many times in my life. I'm actually quite a rarity. An IT type that likes his software and hardware...*

Apple has it's fair share of BS, too. This whole sprawling Apple/Iphone/Itunes/Genius thing gets on my nerves. It's still remembering that Beyonce CD I bought Becca, and suggests that I need to buy some pretty unlikely stuff. biggrin.gif

*Except when it talks to me. It always picks the wrong time to speak. I doubt seriously that "Microsoft Office 2008 needs my attention" at 4am.

But you don't ever have to play with it, since you like XP so much. ;)

Meanwhile, I'll enjoy my lovely new compy and Windows 7. Which isn't bad. I like it's new features, and the fact that it's FREAKING LIGHTNING FAST... course, the slowness may have just been the old comp getting tired...

A fresh install of windows almost always is faster (except with Vista), which is why a from-scratch re-install, even of XP, sometimes helps. And explains the existence of the plethora of 3rd-party optimization software, so many places in windows where crud accumulates and bogs things down: in the registry, on the hard drive, in the installation logs, etc.

Both my adult children were "early users" of Windows 7. My son had a Linux version on his laptop before 7. He hated Vista with a passion. Both now are very pleased with 7 (both have at least four months on the operating system). Both are still impressed with the speed and usability and general lack of problems. I can't say I love Windows, but because I have to remain compatible with my work computer I will need to stay in the Microsoft area (although a separate boot partition is desirable on my home computer). I respect the members on this site who for various reasons advocate other operating systems. If you must keep Windows on your computer (for compatibility/incompatibility reasons) I recommend upgrading to 7 in the near future rather than getting stuck with Vista. I just wish my work site would upgrade from Vista to 7 sooner rather than later.
