Hate Vista hate vista Hate.............. well you guys get the idea.
When the fearless machine came back from its vacation at the repair shop, they had installed vista instead of my XP. Oh just put your recovery disks in they said........... The disc drawer doesn't open I called back to say. Oh said they that can happen in shipping, just takd off the side and .......ARRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHI I said. Well you can ship it back they said. If this happens in shipping: AAAAARRRRRGGHHHHHHHHHHH I said. So I am waiting for the assistance of one of my local consultants to assist.
(They also said that I might be able to pry the drawer open!)

The vista that is on the mechanism keeps deciding to update - I can be in the middle of typing an e-mail and all of a sudden thhe screen diforms me that it is shutting down to install updates- no may I , no Is it convenient. just boom for some indefinite duration.

After some (unasked for) updating my comp forgot about its disc drive altogether. I can't remember if this was vista or XP though. I do know that I fixed it after searching several fora and changing something in the registry.

My non-techie husband hates Vista, and it does the same thing, updating all the time. I intentionally bought a used Dell with XP and have had no issues at all with it. It may die someday, but we have a new operating system that isn't Vista!

some minor settings and adjustments should fix the "when to update?" problem

did the repair shop charge you for Vista ? they should have, or it's not legit.

upgrading to Windows 7 would be your best bet overall (other than, you know, a Mac ateviwink.gif)

I just bought the wife a W7 laptop (HP Pavilion dv6t quad), so it will be interesting to try it out
