Just a note - as I've spread this throughout a lot of channels I've come to understand that most people don't read what this is about and thus misunderstands it -

It's a digital art installation, reflecting on the shift from oral personal history to a text based and highly public one, part of which is about people that aren't 'you', even if the one googling your name will think so.

I think it's super cool, though. What your 'profile' looks like changes between searches but mine always feature a large chunk of "illegal", which intrigues me - I don't understand what it comes from.

BTW, a lot of people that I know, including me, has to use their screen name to get a result.

My husband would totally understand whatever it was that I just looked at. I have no idea what it meant--except that it was extremely accurate in the fact that it only gathered information directly from my websites. A surprise given how common my name really is.

Even still based on those results one would suppose that I were actually an author, not an illustrator by trade. biggrin.gif

It was cool though--and its convinced me that if I ever do publish, it will under my maiden name--for which there is not even one internet hit of any kind. ateviwink.gif

both my screen name and my real name are unique, I think, and I got a lot of illegal on my real name which is pretty funny. when it was cycling through on my screen name it kept showing quotes from sk8ter when she referred to me.

I have, as my most notable namesakes, a Vietnam veteran on death row and a leading business lecturer, so the results for my name are decidedly skewed in their favor. That's with using no middle initial. My screen name only turns up one result, and only one branch of the many interests that particular source could lead to. With the middle initial, I am one of two possibles.

This is truly strange.

There are lots of Web pages with my RL name in them, yet Persona says "no digital traces found..." :-P

My given name is a common enough family name that Persona finds lots of info about it.

When I put in a screenname I use once only in a while, it finds lots about that one, too. (It's used by quite a few other people, though.)

It's the same for me. I use my real name in a lot of places, and I have a visible trace if you google me... but this app didn't find any of those traces.

Still, it IS an installation, as in art installation, so...

I like the idea, but - art installation it is, coz otherwise it doesn't make much sense to me. Or I just don't get it: the way the categories are chosen. Totally random, the whole thing, imo.

While browsing some of the comments about it, I found a mention of
http://www.spezify.com/

It doesn't categorize like the mit project, but seems more direct in its approach.

Also Spezify is not an art/reflecting project but a sincere attempt at showing something of what your internet persona appears like.

Whatever that link in the first post is, it won't even let me through to see it. It says my window size is too small, even though it's maximized.

oh, vetch, how cool! :D

I have a popular first name, nickname, and a not uncommon last. Funny how many people out there with my name are either full corporate partners or chefs.
