The quality of the recent Sonic games is terrible, yes. (Save for a few, that is) Though you can go as far as to say that they have a legit reason. There was a blog that was run by a man who is said to have worked at Sonic Team, proven by the fact that he predicted Sonic Unleashed LONG before there was ever any mention of it. He also commented on how the people there were getting bored and didn't feel like working on fucking Sonic games. The reason they continue to mess up is because they couldn't give a shit.
Because you have to admit, they've been throwing them out pretty quickly.
Now see, going back to the original roots will not make everything better, because that is completly impossible. Not only will it not appease the gamers who thrive on 3D games and their 1080 pI graphics, but they will also be attempting to appeal to two different fanbases. The ones who fell in love with the old Sonic, and the ones who fell in love with the new one. The only solution to this is to take Sonic in a completly new direction.
Well not COMPLETLY new. What I'm thinking is a super massive exploration game. It'd have like no Story but would take FOREVER to explore the entire world.
